I find this game very engaging because of the high interaction level. When the rules are properly explained to all players, everyone has their own idea how to proceed and sometimes all the players agree, but not always.

A technically stunning game that could never be accused of over-simplicity. There are simply so many choices available to the Fellowship that skill has a major impact on the chances of success.

Have only played a coupla times with a gamer buddy, but we love it. We both get tense every game, even the time we kicked butt. LOVE calling Gandalf for help, especially when his magic kicks Shelob's spidery butt. Don't like the ring, and had hoped for the same ring in the LotR Risk, but that's a MINOR complaint, negligible actually considering I can just use the better ring.

While fully sympathising with those who don't like the cooperative aspect of this game, this is nontheless the most intruiging and, IMHO, important game since Settlers of Catan. For the conneseur, this is as far as gaming has gone into the realm of art. Has actually shocked my by having excellent replay value, an area where I expected it to fall short.

A game that captures the theme of Tolkien's work perfectly, not so much via the mechanics, but through the feel of the gameplay. You don't feel like you're marching to Mordor, but the tension and suspense, the feeling that the quest is hanging by the breadth of a hair, are very real, and very well done. May have a "best strategy" if you play too much, but for a few plays a year, this isn't really a factor. Some text on special cards, but otherwise, very conducive to play by younger players. Highly recommended!

This is a great game to use in teaching cooperation, sacrifice and goal-setting. It's fun to watch traditional game players playing for the first time as they struggle with the idea of sharing resources and not preserving their own character.

I know the complaints ... "it's group solitaire", "the game plays you instead of the other way around", etc. But the games extraordinary success is in capturing the very feeling of being a member of a desperate fellowship, wanting success for the group yet still hopefully survival for the self. For someone who hadn't read the books, Reiner sure nailed this theme.

This game genuinely makes me feel I am amongst the hobbits struggling to get the ring to Mordor. It can be devastatingly difficult to defeat the game, but the cooperative nature of the game makes for great gameplay every time. One major rap on this game is that it is possible for one player to tell everyone else what to do thus eliminating any real cooperative feel. However, since I only have played with good friends, this has never been an issue with us.

When the movies came out I really got into the whole LOTR crave. My father-in-law let me borrow his books to read and also introduced me to this game. We played it a couple of times together and I really enjoyed it. I appreciate the fact that it follows most of the story line while incorporating many of the events into the play of the game. I got my own copy as a gift from some of my students. Even though my father-in-law and I own 2 copies we don't get as much play time on it as we'd like since there's only a couple other hard core LOTR fans in the family.

(Revision 3- March 2007)This is now the third time I've rewritten my comment on Knizia's LOTR- back in 2001 I thought this was an amazing design and was pretty sure it was a classic for the ages. By 2004, after playing several times in 2-3 player sessions with crappy groups and folks that never really cottoned to the cooperative aspect my opinion on it waned, particularly as I started to realize that there was a sharp disconnect between the level of theme present in the game as a whole and the actual actions taken as part of the process of playing the game. In short, I felt (and still feel) that there is a not entirely congruous joining of a theme/narrative rich metagame and presentation with a minimalist, abstracted cardplay/board movement system that never really felt like LOTR to me. Here we are in 2007, and just a couple of weeks ago I said in my interview with Steve Weeks that I didn't like the game and didn't get how it was regarded as so thematic. With the release of BATTLEFIELDS, I decided to give the game another shot and I was pleased to see that my initial awe of the design returned. LOTR is truly a masterpiece of game design, whether you like the cooperative and abstracted elements or not. There is a HUGE degree of thematic specificity in terms both broad and subtle that really transcends the simpler on-the-board mechanics. It's not about moving the stupid cone forward. It's about a lot of concepts that work as mechanics between players rather than between the players and the system- working together to plan for inevitable disasters, waiting for the slower team members to catch up, solving problems as a team, sacrifice, and standing together at the brink of annihilation. Things like that are definitely part of the LOTR theme, and they are definitely in this game. I think it's interesting that this division between the specific and the abstract is illustrated in the artwork as well- the life tokens for example are pretty generic, but the John Howe artwork is fantasy art at its absolute best. So an about-face? Pretty much. My criticisms are still valid, but as a piece of game design and as a fairly avant-garde gaming experience, there's little doubt that LOTR is a classic game that will almost certainly stand the test of time.

This game totally captures the tense and gripping excitment of the Fellowship's journey to Mordor. Every game is different and just because you won one time one way doesn't mean the next game will be the same. The variables in the game are enough that you feel challenged every game and you'd want to play it again and again. But the game design is such that the variables are not completely random and that the players have the opportunity to manage them. Brilliant game design by Knizia! I've played the game so many times - I've definitely got my money back and more on this investment!

I'm not a big LOTR fan, but this is an almost perfect gaming experience. Challenging, strategic, and featuring lots of player interaction as you discuss what actions to take. Game seems to mold itself and change perfectly to conform to the number of people playing it. Even friends of mine who HATE complex games ended up loving this one. Great John Howe art (that's probably him as Gandalf), cool wooden pieces, and neat progress board shows you how screwed you are in the game. A few rule questions (mostly involving matters of procedure) precipitate the need for a revised rule book (the one that comes with the game is pretty spotty). It's the kind of liscensed game that even my beloved Star Wars would kill to have made.

The Benchmark for other cooperative games, Reiner Knizia masterpiece. This game is so well balanced, if it gets too easy, many different options too make it more difficult. But every game is different and every game has lasting memories. Better play it with people from the same level. But this game has been the most played in my group for sure, and they are all big Gamerz, not casual, but hardcore! Once you understand the game , you are amazed by its marvelous mechanics and how it's so well balanced.

Beautiful game which is actually quite deep to boot. Carries off the arc of the story's plot unbelievably well. I would recommend this to anyone who isn't put off by the cooperative play aspect -- you can even play it credibly solitaire, although it's more work to have to deal with the other characters. Great design, and brilliant art. I doubt there's ever been a better looking boardgame.

Finally got to play this one--it's a masterpiece. Yes, I'm a biased Tolkien nut, but this joins War of the Ring as my only other 10. Hits all the right LOTR nerves, but in a totally different way.

It helps that we have the perfect group for this, so your mileage may vary. However, after one game they are clamoring for more, and I even still have two expansions to add when they tire of the initial game!

Knizia...who'da thunk he'd have made a good game?
