I enjoyed this game. It is very different from any other game I own so it adds a nice variety. My husband was complaining about it the whole time and then ended up winning, so I think for him the jury is still out. We played it the Jamaca rules, and it seemed like just the right amount of thinking/luck that a game of that sort should have.

I really like this game. I'm moving my rating up to a 9. It really is just the right amount of luck and thinking for the amount of time it takes. It fits my sweet spot quite well.

I still have yet to win this game, My husband has won evergame but one. But I still love it.

I finally won. And it wasn't even close.

One of my favourite race games where simplicity doesn't get in the way of strategy. One of the few games where my rating has increased over time because I seem to be unable to get bored with it...

Love it!!, our favourite at this time. Only played with 4 or 5 players so am interested to see how it plays with 2 or 3 players after our IL's go home. DS nearly 6 enjoyed playing too, but impatient waiting for 4 people to go before him lol!!

This is an extremely fun game. The theme is even fun. We generally have 2 players, but have also played with 4 or 5. It works nicely with any of these numbers. The idea of backing up in order to get cards is very clever.

Amazing game! Easy to teach and seems very simple. Played it with non-gamers and they are hooked. Good way to introduce the concept of the meta-game. Play often online at youplay.it (see links)

Unsurpassed in its category (light/medium weight race games), this highly underrated game is a master-class in game design. Its minimalist set of just 3 rules distils all game-balancing mechanisms to their barest dichotomy: spend resources to get closer to your goal, and get further away from the goal to replenish resources! The game is also malleable: one can easily shorten the duration or give a handicap to a weaker player. Cartagena plays equally well (but very differently!) with 2 or 5 players, with non-trivial strategical and tactical options (and a bit of luck to throw in more excitement).

I love this game. Every time I introduce it, people are like, oh, it's a race game, cool. Then after 2 turns they are like, oh, wait, I don't have any cards any more.

Yep, because in order to go forward, you must go backwards. That's the only way to gain more cards. So if you want to be first to escape, you have to manage your moving backwards steps to gain most cards, to plan to jump ahead, onto the board and escape from Cartagena!! Excellent game.

I seem to enjoy this game more every time I play - even though my husband is getting wise to the strategy and starting to beat me sometimes.. I've always loved puzzles and this appeals to that side of me - deciphering the optimal move is just a lot of fun (and no, I don't suffer from AP, but I've found that my husband sure does! I guess that means that I suffer from HIS AP). Recommended for anyone - easy to learn, quick to play and a great game for non-gamers. So far we've only played the Jamaica version with the cards hidden but I'd like to try the Tortuga version with all cards exposed too. My son is having a hard time getting into Cartagena because it really bothers him to have to move his pirates backwards in order to draw more cards. Once he gets used to the fact that moving backwards is OK and can actually help you tremendously, I think he'll enjoy this more.
Fantastic game that I will never turn down.

Love this game of card management. Can be taught in 2 minutes and played in 30. Great game.

Upgraded rating to a 10. This is one of the very few games that plays well with any number from 2 to 6.

Easy to teach, fast to learn and fast to play.

While there are some strategic decisions to make you - most of all - have to find out the best timing. Furthermore, you have to keep an eye on the supply cards on offer and which cards are being drawn by your opponents.

Seem to play well with any number of players + cheap game.

Hall of Fame material - what an elegant design! I can't think of any type of gamer who would NOT enjoy this game. And at long last Ravensburger have given it the material design it deserves.
(I applaud their decision to get rid of the variant with open cards - which is nothing but an AP-fest - in this new edition.)

Must have game. Delightful strategy game (3-5 players)with a unique, clever mechanic, fast and short but a lot of thinking involved.

This (original) version "Cartagena: The Escape" is out of print, but the version II is the same game, with different rules -- though you can play using the original rules, so you get two games in one that way.

Copies go for $22 bucks with shipping on eBay, or about the same on Amazon. This is one of my half-dozen must-have in-print games that I recommend to everyone, even if you're not much of a gamer. (Others are Splendor, Spot-It!, Qwirkle travel edition, and Can't Stop.)

A game I thoroughly enjoy as a 20 minute psuedo-filler everytime I play. The balance between falling back to collect resources and the imperative to take advantage of other people's positioning with big forward moves, without setting up the next player for even bigger moves, loads the game with lots of taut decisions in a short timeframe.

Modular board. Pirate theme. Nice wooden bits. Strategy coming out of every pore. This is a sweet little game. I have only played a flurry of games with 2 playing -- I can only imagine the strategy and intensity ramps up HUGELY when playing with the full field. It's sort of a minimalist Hare & Tortoise. And that's a wonderful, wonderful thing. A game of beauty, whose rating will only likely go UP (though there's not far for it to go) with future plays.
