I love the mechanics: the double auction and the tile placing. It playes smooth and there is nearly no downtime. The interaction between the players is tricky and involving. The theme and artwork are brilliant and all fits perfectly together. I love this game!

A very under-rated game. It has good auction mechanics as well as a tactical element. Do you take a gamble for the economic disasters or burn through all the science points to say safe?
Also, there is a good two-player variant on the forums which opens this game up more

Really intriguing auction / tile placement game where you balance building cities and industrial zones, while having to get rid of the pollution they create. Highly rated...

Pretty darn good I thought on a single play. It reminded me of a Wallace game but without the mind bending super trickiness. I liked the tactile and non-combative nature of the interaction. Pretty good all round.

I love the pollution, the more tiles you buy the more "smoke cubes" you get.

I can honestly not say why I like this so much. It might be the modern theme with both its good and bad sides, but probably it is more for the game itself. The auction parts are the main game and there are some hard decisions to make. I also like the sense of progression in the game.

20th Century is a brilliant mix of auction and tile laying. The multiple auctions with multiple currencies are tight and gave you a lot to consider as you make your decisions. The tile placement can be a real challenge and requires some clever spacial reasoning. I love that you have to find the balance between acquisition, and rapid growth with excess pollution. I can have a little runaway leader problem, but games with more experienced played should mitigate that. Overall I think it is a wonderful and overlooked gem.

Wow, what a pleasant surprise 20th Century was! It combines tile placement, resource management and 2 different types of auctions into 1 90 minute game. My group quite enjoyed the different strategies that can be employed as well.

I think it's suchy's best game. Or at least the one I enjoyed most among other nice games like shipyard, league of six + expansion, last will. It has great graphics, simple system and a good economic balance. Only thing I did not very much enjoy was the tile placement which causes spatial limitations, of which I am a hater. But there are the technologies of bridges and locomotives for that.

I've played this a few times now and got a decent idea of it. I love the auction mechanic for the disasters and think that the whole game works really nicely.

The variable scoring methods means that you can't simply find one winning strategy.

All in all, this is a really good game that I would pick up in a heartbeat if it wasn't so damned expensive!

Update: I found it in a sale and was delighted to do so! Massively replayable and a huge amount of fun.

Last year, in Essen, I passed on this game thinking that it was another typical mixed mechanics euro.

Combining several different auction mechanics into a tile lying game with some minor civ type elements works fairly well after several plays. The game can suffer from a runaway leader problem if other players are not carful. The pollution element is a nice and thematic addition but tends not to be as big of a problem as many newer player expect (although it can lead to some significant points during end game scoring). Although a balanced approach between money and science may seem the obvious path to doing well, I have seen an early culture point push work well depending on the interim scoring cards that come into play. Overall, a solid game that appears to scale well for 3-5 players (although it can overstay its welcome with larger player counts and AP prone players).

Rated 8 after the first play with three players.
Nice solid and crisp components. The theme (waste and environmental status) is worked well in to the game. Rules could have been written a bit better though.
Like the two difrent bidding/auction systems in the game as well. Agree with the fact that keeping your lands clear from waste will give you most points.

Nice middleweight game, good balance of mechanisms, nothing startlingly new but holds well to its theme and provides a good challenge. The negative auction to avoid pollution works well. Look forward to exploring the gamespace further. Good components and clear rules.

I really like Shipyard so when I first saw about this I thought it would be a definate purchase. The lack of buzz coming out of Essen for it was a bit worrying. Then i read some reviews and comments that were not that great.

I don't know where all the negative vibes have come from on this game. It's quite quick and it's quite fun. A pretty good combo to me.

Great first impression after two plays. The mechanics in the game are all tried and true but the way it is put together makes it really shine. It has elements that I like from other games. Puzzle aspect for putting your city together, a feel of civilization building with the different technology choices and tile choices. Agonizing decisions in the auctions, an element of screwage in the disaster auction, money management, and the agaony of garbage management and loss of VPs. A very good package.

Quite impressed with my first play. Thematically it puts me in mind of Industrial Waste, with different sorts of mechanisms to achieve a lot of the same feel.

You bid on tiles that you connect (Carcassonne-style), each featuring cities which pay out different sorts of things: technology, money, or points. You need to have workers on those cities (Puerto Rico-style) to get the payout. Trash is generated that you must remove with recycling centers.

Money allows you to bid on and buy land tiles. Technology is another currency that allows you to purchase technology/industry tiles which give you some special bonuses or actions. Then there's a nasty Vegas Showdown or Amun-Re sort of bidding to avoid disasters (at best, nothing happens, at worst, you'll end up with a lot more more trash and move backwards down the happiness track).

Five rounds later it's all over but the crying.

As with the designer's Shipyard, it looks complex, but actually flows smoothly. And though there are recognizable mechanisms from other games, the game itself doesn't feel derivative at all.

The trash cubes are pretty awesome, too.

Economic development game with a bit of an ecological angle as well. For me this occupies a similar niche as Power Grid, a game I adore. It suffers from having at least one layer too many (the train tracks, I'm thinking) but it's still a fun and interesting experience with each play. I like it a lot, but my fellow players don't seem to be too captivated by it.
