MY FAVORITE GAME

This game is so awesome. It's quick, strategic, and a lot of fun. Can't wait for Devastation. Check this game out if you can! It is a masterpiece.

Plays include both War and Devastation games.

Wholly Ambitious Asymmetric Design! Enough Characters to Keep You Playing as Long as You Want To!

Best with 2 players

Love the variety between characters. Kinda hard to grasp the strategies when playing against real people at first, but if you want to see how deep it goes try playing both sides solo... WHOA!

Still have to see how the balance works out (characters are SO DIFFERENT!), and what "high level play" looks like (how deep does it go?), but it seems like a lot of thought and testing was put forward by the designer so I'm giving this game a large benefit of the doubt.

Play will bog down at first if you try to play well, as this is actually a full-information game (where cards are PURELY used for action selection, NOT randomness!) but there are quite a few complex options per turn. That may make it sound like more work than fun, but it's really not. At its core it comes down to a RPS system of sorts, but with soft-counters where you can trade damage with your opponent but maybe do a move for board positioning or setting up for a later play, rather than the hard-counters found in something like Yomi. This makes for a really challenging game that's very hard to master.

Great, original way to do a combat game -- I don't think anything like this has ever been done before.

VS Yomi: Yomi is like a higher budget commercial fighting game (think a proper Street Fighter release), where as BattleCON is like... Capcom Fighting Jam, or some homebrew Mugen module or something. Only with A LOT of heart in it.

Something funny to me though is that a lot of Yomi detractors point to BattleCON as the clearly superior game, since it has "no luck" and Yomi is just rock-paper-scissors. The games are the same animal in different skin. Since you always know what your opponent can do in BattleCON, the most important skill becomes predicting what he actually will do. And though unlike some others I do acknowledge predicting your opponent as a legitimate skill, I also realize that during key moments it can feel like a guess between options A, B, or C. Sound familiar?

Designer has shown that he is willing to make revisions for balance, and there are a lot of fun and interesting matchups in this game. I was conservative for a while, but ready to call it a 10. May climb my Top 10 as I get the hang of playing it more quickly.

(5 Design + 5 Enjoyment)

The variety of characters (21 with the three Kickstarter characters), the ability to maneuver, 'arena' areas, Special Actions, multi-player options (including team play), make this game very intriguing.

The play makes it irresistible.

KS version.

BattleCON is one of my favorite 2 player games. The characters all feel incredibly different, and there is a great deal of variety in the matchups. This is one of the best asymmetric games I've played, with characters that play more differently than other similar games.

There is no randomness, and there is an interesting psychological aspect to the game, where you try to predict your opponent's move, and counter it. This is an incredibly deep game, and it takes a number of games to internalize your own options, much less your opponent's.

BattleCON has more value for money than Yomi, although I'm not sure how well it will hold up to high level play. There are more characters, more play modes, and more differences between characters. I'm doing the 100 play challenge with this game, so maybe I'll get a better sense of its potential for high level play as I get closer to finishing the challenge.

The only problem I have with the game so far is the difficulty in getting new players involved. There is a bit of a learning curve, which isn't so bad except that an experienced player will repeatedly counter the moves of an inexperienced player. This can be frustrating for new players. Letting them play with Cadenza is a must. Before the nerf to Luc Von Gott, he was a good choice as well.

upped rating

This game is currently my second favorite 2 player game. There is a lot of subtlety to a given matchup, and I'm having a ton of fun exploring the strategic landscape. The attack pair mechanic and cool down mechanic are brilliant, creating both an incredibly deep hand management aspect with no randomness, and a large array of options for each character without using many components.

Note: The 10 rating is for the remastered 2nd edition. The first edition I would rate a 9.

A great, no-luck two player duel game. The rules are extremely intuitive and there seems to be plenty of depth to be found. The huge amount of characters and options give this small box loads and loads of replayability. A very pleasant surprise and definitely recommended!

Initially I though the art and names of characters and moves were uninviting. I've since become used to the art when playing with a friend. The game is simple to teach, but anyone unaccustomed to fighting games in any medium will clutch their player aid to keep track of which phase they're in. Me and the wife found it enjoyable to just pick random pairs for our first match to understand the flow of the game. Definitely needs a regular opponent to get everything out of.

This is the game that I have been looking for my whole life. This is as close to an arcade style fighting game as you can come in board game form. It's a tactical game where luck isn't a factor combined with a focus on positional control and asymmetric characters. I can feel myself getting better with every play which comes down to the wire. Both players have been in every match to the last strike. I haven't even touched the half of the great stuff in this box, and I can't wait to.

Awesome design which successfully captures the actual feel of fighting game with minimal complexity.
Edited on 3/4/2012:
OK. This game is gorgeous. My second 10 since Puerto Rico which was published 10 years ago. That said enough.
I'm now so addicted to this game that I brought a few decks with me always so I could simulate the move and combos even during travel/ free time. Mind you that although I'm a video gamer, I'm never a competitive fighting gamer. Just need to find competitive players...
