Deep and tense, original the alliance system. I played a 7 players game, very enjioing, can be useful a card list for every player during the first game. Another must !

This game really does seem to have it all - interaction, rock'em sock'em violence, not too much luck, lots of planning, wide range of suitable seat counts, and a reasonable playing time. This bad boy puts a lot of aspiring grand strategic multiplayers in the shade.

Great game that probably requires repeated play to be correctly mastered. Bidding for alliances turns what could have been a chaotic game into a very strategic one. Understanding all the tiles and using them to build a coherent strategy seems to be one of the greatest challenge in this game.

A great multiplayer game. The bidding system for alliances can be tense at times, random area draws create "hotspots" to fight over. Everyone is evenly matched and how you play is up to you.

Another amazing game by Mr. Wallace. I came in dead last in a 6 player game but that still doesn't change my opinion. 4 of the others had played this before so I had some excuse to finish a close 6th. I had some bad luck at the start but these things tend to even out and it makes life interesting when that happens.

Easy to learn game. You can use all your brain power to beat the other players instead of using part to master the mechanics.

What a fantastic game! It has diplomacy, conflict, money management, and more. I absolutely love it, and with the right group, it's just unbeatable.

This is one of my few tens. Light war gaming, or is it area control? tough decsisions every play, but not complicated to explain or learn. This game is a great great game.

What an excellent game! I played and enjoyed Age of Steam, but here's something by Wallace that I can sink my teeth into. Civ-building area control is right up my alley. I'm discovering that I'm more of a wargamer than a euro-gamer, but this title just might please both crowds. It's not a war game to be sure, but it does have some nice war game elements to it, and difficult strategic decisions. The alliance/turn order bid mechanism is brilliant, and one of the most enjoyable yet confounding aspects of the game. There's just enough 'chrome' in the tile options to add a nice replay factor. It's definitel on the long side for your average eurogame, and I doubt I'd be interested in a game with less than 4 players... on the other hand if you've got 5-7 people ready to vie for global domination for the afternoon, Struggle of Empires will suit your needs quite nicely.

This is a fantastic game! Wallace is the best! This is a solid 10 , where as PotR is really an 11 or 12. The box artwork was a BAD IDEA! I can't begin to tell you the grief I recieve for it. "Is that a game about slavery?". The Oakland store where I picked this up actually won't display the game without covering up the slave. The game itsef is among the best!

Way too many options to become victorious. With several things that I usually don't really like, like a victory track and fixed amount of turns. But somehow this game mixes it all very well.

Right now, my favorite game. I love the difficult decisions that you are forced to make most every round because you can't do everything you want. Easy to learn, but much more difficult to master.

I have played this several times (~6 or 7) and I think every game has been interesting and fun. There is no set strategy that is guaranteed to work so every game has been varied with lots of swings in each game. Better not to play with people who calculate the current score every turn, although the hidden unrest mitigates this somewhat.

Liked the blend of securing allies and opponents. Lots of good features - there is quite a few alternatives to pursue with your limited actions via the tiles and where to attack.
The rules need some digesting and understanding of how the various tiles work. Definitely check out the FAQ and questions in forums

Sometimes I feel like this game's most boring and tireless promoter. It's a great empire-building game with a perfect balance of depth and ease of play; it can run a little long for some people, but the downtime is interesting enough, particularly with 5-6 players. Some people think the most original element of this game is the alliance mechanism, in which you bid over who you're allowed to attack. Personally, I think the best thing about Struggle of Empires is that while it doesn't have too terribly many measurements of success to keep track of, it has a wide range of tiles that allow you to really customize your strategy. There is no single obvious route to victory. [Editor: I've never come close to winning without Banking, though...] The dice mechanism is pretty innovative (and a leetle homage to Settlers, perhaps?). Manages to be on-theme despite the somewhat plain board. While it's quite complex due to the choice of tiles, the rules fit onto three or four pages.

Since there's no game I'd rather play, and there's no game that would even give me pause if I had to choose between the two, this is among only two or three 10s I can think of, but of those, it's by far the best.
