Brutal in all the best ways. This game was not meant to capture the gameplay of the boardgame, but rather the "attitude" of besting your opponents at survival - by any means necessary. Yes, this is one of those knife-fight games, but it's one that I'm always happy to play.

Dunno what's wrong with Dominant Species, but even this very simple & fun filler/family game is quite addictive.

Highly recommended for everybody.

So what Dominant Species The Card Game isn't is a card game version of Dominant Species. Instead, it's a clever game that redefines its trick-taking each round. Hand-management is brutal; the most critical skill in this game is knowing when to just quit before a fight even starts. I found that the game played very quickly with up to four, but I've not tested another number. My major criticism of the game is lack of catch-up mechanism: the rich get richer, and there are fewer unexpected come from behind victories than I would have liked.

A neat card game that mixes elements from other games I like such as Condotierre.

Altogether it is highly enjoyable and plays quickly. The suppression rules and various points bonuses make for an engaging game throughout.

An enjoyable two player game.

Surpisingly, the family likes it as it's light and easy to follow with a bit of "screwage" to make it competitive. Definately not as complex as the board game. Just wish the pieces/counters were bigger.

A trick taking game with a take-that element and some interesting exceptions in its strategy. Not bad, not anything special either. I liked the dynamics of the last round, but it is very possible that you will not have the chance to play all the cards you gathered. Poor graphic design.

A good 8. I like the theme, the artwork and the game play. It is a second game of the night rather than a full night's game. I imagine playing quite a bit, if I do I think it will go up to a 9.

Several of the negative reviews try to compare the card game to the board game and thus it does not live up to the high expectations set by the original board game. Fair enough, but as someone who has yet to play the board game, this card game is fantastic. I love games with lots of interaction between players and high degree of a "cut throat" game play, and this game is full of it. This is an auction style game, in which players must strategically plan on when to make their move. Exhaust your resources to early and you will fall behind in the later rounds where the points are worth more. Make your move to late, and you may not be able to catch the player that has been nickel and diming his way to victory. What makes the game awesome, is the best laid plans can be quickly laid to waste in a heartbeat and at any time. Like nature, the winner will be determined by who can adapt the best AND a have a little luck. You can go toe to toe with your opponents every round in a war of attrition, or save your cards for an onslaught of points in the final round to destroy your opponents, but beware you could find yourself holding an epic hand, only to see the round being brought to a premature end via a special event card before you have the chance to play your cards. As soon as I finished playing this game, I hopped on my phone I ordered both it and the board game version of the game.

Much better than I was expecting. As long as you set aside the fact that this isn't a distilled version of the original, you can enjoy a very nasty game of supremacy and hand management.

Players select from a limited hand of cards to try to gain dominance in that round (by having the highest value of cards) while simultaneously competing for resources available (which offer 1 - 3 points). But some cards suppress other species, so you have to invert them, lowering their value. Various event cards can be helpful if you save them for the right moment.

The key for this game is timing - not only looking ahead at the next biome card coming up, but also at whcih round you're in. Getting dominance in early rounds is fine, but you only get a few points. Taking control later scores you a lot more. A good game with 2 players, great with 4, and I would love to try it with 6. I'd call this game my surprise of the year.

Played a game today after getting through the easy, short rulebook. After playing a 2-player game, it's quite obvious that this game will rely almost entirely on luck. We had a good time. Even my non-gaming boyfriend understood, and picked it up quickly. Will be a much better short, easy, goto game then the Fluxxes, (and not as frustrating!).

Dominant Species: The Card Game Promo Card Set (BGG Promo Card Set) (2012)

I was wary of this game, oddly enough because I thought its big brother was pretty much flawless. They are entirely different games, but both games really are excellent. DStCG plays like an auction game (your animals are essentially bids to win dominance each turn), and it has a lot of randomness, but this makes it perfect for family game night or as a gateway game. The decision between spending now or saving for later really does make a difference, and it adds just the right amount of tension to the game. Some of the events are powerful, but they don't overshadow good gameplay. This is a great little game!

It is like Condotierie but with a second level of complexity (scoring). A very interesting game with a cutthroat ending. It is a little more complex to become a favorite filler, and it is a little more simple to become a favorite strategy card game. This game is somewhere in between and will not satisfy either side.

Much better than so many of the nay-sayers are saying, especially those who did video reviews. Nope it's nothing like it's big brother and yes it feels like they were trying to cash in on the DS name but all that aside it's a good game in it's own right. I don't like Taj Mahal but this game feels a bit like that and I enjoy this implementation a lot better. Simple to teach and has some real decisions to be made about timing of card play. I like this one a lot.

With promo cards.

This game is a nice thinky take-that filler. Although card games are often not as complex as their inspirations, this one is decidedly light compared to DS.

3 plays all 3p:
Enough meaningful decisions, runs maybe too long, but right now I give it favorable, biggest demerit is the time. Our second game ran closer to 75 mins. I am sure that time will decrease, but still lengthy.

I will borrow some d10s to help with critter counting.

Third play time sped up a lot, I like my light games to have decisions, so small bump in rating. There is enough conflict, but it never gets mean.

This last 3 player game was very good! I think it's likely a sweet spot for this quick and aggressive card game. Maybe 4 would be good too. I like the chaos of this game, but my main complaint would be the "reward the leader" effects included. It might be more thematic, but it only hurts the enjoyment of the game for all the players involved. I think the action cards should reward the losers and the endgame scoring should penalize the survival leader; they got enough points already!
