The best Adventure RPG game.
Deckbuilding in adventure/RPG setting with almost puzzle-like combat. Very clever mechanics that keep you thinking about "how I will play it next time" long after you stopped playing. Amazing!

An excellent adventure game, and by far the best there is! A vivid world is offered for exploration; the main mechanic of the game offers great possibilities.
Many ways to utilize your cards and your mana make for plentiful strategies and depth. Each round is both a beautiful puzzle and a small decision. Brilliant! colourful!
The game is also excellent as an adventure game that realises its creative fantasy world through both theme and mechanics.
A must have for every boardgamer.
In the expansion I'd like even more enemies, complex wounds, and most needed are new map tiles with even more new features to make the world of mage knight really vast.

edit:
I am now convinced that Vlaada Chvatil is an advanced alien that has come to astonish us with his innovations, though instead of inventing the cure for cancer, the bastard makes boardgames!

Luckily enough to be sent the files to create a prototype of this game before it came out. Now that I own the actual copy, I am extremely happy.

This is one of the games I've waited my whole life for. I normally hate games where you go around killing things and getting xp because they are normally dice rolling and luck based. This one isnt. It combines the best bits of other games, gels them all well together.

It has well constructed game mechanics, a very clever combat mechanic which acts as a kind of puzzle. The replayability is the best I have ever seen in a game. You can play this game competitively, coop, solo. You can choose whether to turn on Player vs Player combat or not. The game comes packed with 11 scenarios and multiple variant rules already built in that you really can play this game however you want to.

Play time can be a turn off, because this game has a big rulebook and is moderately complex. And a full first game might take about 6 hours, but the play time drops drastically with each play, coming down to 3-4 hours.

Epic game. Thankyou Vlaada.

Unfortunately, some players of the original Mage Knight game are going to rate this game poorly because it isnt anything like the original game. Oh look, there we are, someone has already rated the game low although he has never played it and doesnt know anything about it but is upset that he cant use his old Mage Knight figures

I always want fantasy adventure boardgame. But aside from Magic Realm, no game ever reach the "goodness" that I want. They're either too much luck or too simple. Of course there are some good fantasy dungeon game (like descent, claustrophobia), but what I want is more on adventure side. And then came Mage Knight.

- Randomized Map
- Variable player power
- Cunning play over luck (luck can be minimized a lot)
- Units to command
- Various skills, advances, and spell
- Flavorful enemies, locations, and adventures.
- So many scenarios to adjust playability

They answer almost everything I need. And the expansions make it better. This is a very heavy game. Not for boardgame newbie.

The most fun game to play solo I have ever played.

Played loads of solo games

If you like RPG boardgames, this is the best IMHO

I am really enjoying playing 3p and 4p using Vassal.

This designer is a genius cos he has designed my 2 favourite non-wargames.... this and Through the Ages.

Worthy of an 11

Love the solo game option. Great fusion of euro and ameri-trash. This game will have you thinking about it when you aren't even playing.

The co-op didn't go over so well. My wife found the games learning curve initially difficult, but ultimately she was frustrated by the feeling of not being able to do much. Though she understood it was because she just didn't know how to play very skillfully. The game does take time to get good at.

I would only play this game two player. Anything more would be torture.

The game is a bit of a table hog and it may take you awhile to figure out an optimal configuration.

This has become one of my favorite solo games and favorite games period! This one goes to eleven.

I enjoyed my one play of this, which was a 2player game, the other player helping me along with learning the rules as I went. The biggest turn off for me is that you only cycle through your deck a couple of times. It feels as though this would be a game that you'd get most out of solo, whilst yearning to have the multi-player experience with an equally matched opponent. Implements some ideas from Magic Realm well, and compared to that at least the rules are comprehendable, but I don't think this replaces its predecessor (nor indeed was it intended to, I'm sure).
2014 Edit: Now, I own the game, have got more plays in and am liking MK more and more. It is one of those games that really sticks in your mind after play (or during if you leave a solo game set up) - thinking about different ways it could play out. A surprisingly wide scope of ways to play, both from the subtle variation of scenarios and the very different approaches that can be taken during the game. The degree of determinism in the design fascinates me for some reason. I've particularly enjoyed multi-player, which can get long, although certainly afternoon-able when playing Blitz. I'm much less concerned about the limited cycling, which only becomes another strategic factor to consider when making card purchases - but essentially with MK, the 'deck-building' label doesn't really fit: for me, a deck-builder needs to have deck-thinning and cycling as more significant considerations in play.

This game gets better with each play. Possibly Vlaada's best (and that's saying something). Each round is like a mini-puzzle you need to solve with the cards you draw and you tailor each of those puzzles to your liking with the deck-building aspect. It works on every level.

Edit: Moved up to a 10 after picking up the expansion. One of the best games out there!

Wow, I am amazed. Vlaada is without any doubt the most versatile games designer around.

I normally hate adventure games, because they usually are boring dicefests where one goes around killing everything he ecounters. So, a long (very long) adventure game is one of the less likely games I would possibly like.

But I absolutely love Mage Knight.

It has theme, it has replayability, it has very small doses of luck, it can be played cooperatively or competitively. Furthermore, one can do good or evil deeds, and both have consequences!

This is a great, innovative design. It puts the deckbuilding mechanic inside a true game (the only other design doing that is A Few Acres of Snow), but there is also much more to love: the mana management is so clever, the day/night alternance is brilliant, the tactics card are another touch of great design...

Mage Knight would be on my personal top10 if it would be a shorter game. BUT, would a shorter Mage Knight have the same appeal?
Don't know, but if it can stand another handful of plays retaining the same level of excitement, it would enter the top10 anyway...

Update july 14, 2012: after 10 games, the awesomeness of Mage Knight strikes me even more! What a wonderful masterpiece! I even had a couple solo plays (and I normally don't care playing solo...) and they were amazing! Now I am convinced the game needs its length to be so epic... if only I'd be able to squeeze some more games in my tight timetable...
Rating upgraded to 9.5!

Update february 25, 2013: after more than 25 plays, I am fully convinced that this game needs to be at the top. The only game of this lenght and complexity I ever rate this high. It's a 10!

An amazing take on adventure games by Chvatil. An excellent mix of modern "euro-ish" mechanisms (hand management, deck building, resource management, variable player order) and fantasy adventure setting (bash monsters, other characters, level up, gain fame and fortune, burn down monasteries ). The day and night rounds with their different tactics is a fantastic addition to the genre. And it looks like replay value is almost infinite.

Mage Knight is an excellent game with ALOT of options and rules. Everytime I played it so far, I've uncovered new rules I didn't know or played wrong. This game just keeps getting better with each play. I can see my play group bringing this game out many times for many months to come.

Tremendously deep, addictive, satisfying game. By far the best solo game I've ever played.

Awesome game, played solo walkthrough. Building a better insert later this week after the list legion arrives. Looks like there will be lots of replayability will this one due to the randomness of the board and card draws. I will probably play solo conquest most of the time. I like that the characters are unique, also going to try this one multiplayer.

My current favorite board game, and probably the most brilliant game design I've ever seen. MKBG is an extremely multifaceted game that offers a rich playing experience. It rates high on both randomness and skill, which is a combination I look for in games. The core of MKBG is a deck-building card game, and everything else is arranged around that core.

Most deck-builders focus more on choosing the cards you'd like to draw later, and less on figuring out the best way to actually play your hand. MKBG is not like that. The tactics of card play are extremely complex, challenging, and flexible. Every card can be used in at least six ways, two primary and four secondary. There is the card's standard effect, an advanced effect that requires you to spend mana, and four generic wild-card effects that are shared by all cards. And even once you've chosen which cards to play for which effects, there are further decisions about how to apply those effects. Where do you move? What battles will you fight? How will you assign your blocking, wounds, attacks, etc.? How will you get the mana you need? Which cards should you conserve for next round? Are you willing to blow a bunch of these cards for weaker wild-card effects just to get to the cards you need? Or should you just rest and do some discarding so that your hand is stronger next turn?

Also, there is much more to MKBG than just the card play. There is an entire map to explore. Where you travel and where you are positioned are extremely important, because they determine your current and future opportunities. Each location has different challenges, different benefits. There are units to recruit into your army. The units don't go into your deck. They stay on the table, and can provide a variety of services at crucial moments. There is a constantly-changing shared mana pool, with dice showing different colors of mana. There are mana crystals, which allow you to store mana of a specific color until you need it. There are Tactics cards that you draft, which also don't go into your deck. Those determine turn order and usually give you a special power for the round. As you gain fame, you will benefit from special skill tiles, increased resistance to wounds, a larger hand size, and the ability to command more units. There is also your reputation to consider, which affects the way you interact with many of the board locations.

The cards you draw will often prevent you from doing what you would like to do in the way you would like to do it. But with experience, you learn that there's always a way to work around this. There is a great deal of power in planning ahead in MKBG. Novice players probably will approach the game one turn at a time, and may not see the more strategic elements. But the best players are always thinking about their next turn, and the turn after that, and the rest of the round, and the rest of the game. You want to have a plan for what you're doing over the next several hands, but you need to stay flexible and willing to re-order things or develop contingency plans.

This is what I have been waiting for - resource management mechanics with a perfectly integrated adventure game theme. Vlaada is a maniacal genius, blending bits of Through The Ages and Dungeon Lords with classic adventure games like Talisman and sprinkling just a touch of Dominion on top. Simply awesome!

Amazing solo experience. Deeply thematic, strategic and tactical, I keep losing hours on this one as it just sucks you in.

It's everything I imagined Magic Realm to be but with fabulous components and rules you can actually understand. Talking of which many thanks to Ricky2002 for his excellent walk-through videos which made that first play so much easier!
