ESSENTIAL expansion for Canyon. Adds Cosmic Encounter-ish powers and tightens up the game.

Grand Canyon is essential for gamers to hold their interest in Canyon. By adding special powers, rocks, logs, and currents, Grand Canyon kicks up the the decision-making and the adventure. It also provides a tiny dose of take-that.

I find it odd that the expansion has a lower rating than Canyon, since Grand Canyon gives the base game much more interesting decisions to make, and adds a wilder level of chaos to the game while also allowing people to make good decisions.

Grand Canyon -- Adds some variability to a solid game. This can be especially fun if the obstacles are initially placed such that early goals are as much about navigation as they are about maximizing scoring.

Played with 4 and not sure if this expansion would be better with more. You have boulders to create bottlenecks, rapids to speed up movement and the character action cards which influence the card play. Tactically more interesting than the base game, but there is some elements of nastiness, as well as some downtime as players pick their character for the round.

Better than I expected. It doesn’t add as much chaos as I feared while it adds relevant decisions and a mechanism to compensate lucky hands of the leaders. Its main drawback is the added length into a game that already is in danger of outstaying its welcome. I’m a fan of Canyon’s pure trick-taking and don’t mind its repetition so this is not a necessary expansion for me but I probably would include it most of the time. For others, it might inject enough variability to keep them interested.

An expansion to a game within a game. And (again), maybe a more attractive game because of it.

p: the logs and other obstacles are obvious additions for making the board a bit more varied over several replays, but the real attraction of this expansion are the various Indian Guides on offer to the players, each with individual abilities that can drastically change the flow of the original canoe game.

It did bring some welcome controlled chaos to the board, and to the bored, and on the whole the game was more appreciated by all. Not sure if it substantially improves on the basic game, but at least it gave players a bit more to complentate. And since the original is a very well executed family game, the added considerations were obviously quite welcome in our more seasoned group. It certainly didn't magically transform gameplay into a gripping battle of wits, but it was fun, it was quick, harmless, and it wasn't half bad.

The next time it will come on the table is undoubtly when we have our younger visitors, and for this more appropriate crowd, the additional cards will be

We played this expansion a few times but felt it just added catch-the-leader length without adding depth or enjoyment. We now prefer to stay with the base game that zips along, speed being the essence required here in what is essentially Oh Hell with more luck.

This is certainly an interesting combination of a trick-taking game with a race game. My problem with the game is that it is dependent on good card draws - you can play as clever as you want, at some point in the game you WILL need a hand that can take a lot of tricks, and for that you need a good selection of trumps. If you don't draw them - bad luck....
