Great expansion / alternate building play. Adds a nice "freshness" to the gameplay.

Makes an already high quality game that much better. My group only plays with a permanent expansion set of Black Market, Guest House, Church, Small Wharf, Lighthouse, Library now (Removing the Construction Hut, Hospice, Office, Large Warehouse, Factory and University), and it makes the game that much more tight and interesting. I refuse to play with the normal expansion rules because there are too many broken combinations (Forest House / Haci) or buildings like the Union Hall which is viciously unbalanced by itself. I also dislike the Aqueduct because it tends to send people into a pre-determined slum lord role while the Small Market is more versatile and keeps people's options open early. Only real point of debate left in my mind is between the Factory and the Lighthouse, I like both of them, though they play into different strategies. I vacillate between the two buildings, but I'm happy to play with either of them really. (I own a real set of buildings in English)

Homemade version (from the files on the Geek).

This one was hard for me to rate, as all it really does is add options to the basic game. However, it does improve the game (partly by removing the less useful buildings) so it can hardly rate lower than the basic game can it? Anyway, having used it to get the game back to the table, I am liking some of the new buildings a lot. We have not played the draft version as it is in the rules but this seems rather pointless - we just set up the game using a set of buildings decided by committee (which usually works by me picking a set and any dissent is worked out). At least some expansion buildings will be in almost every future game of PR I play face-to-face.

Best bang for your buck for any expansion for any game! Exponential variety for cheap or free.

Finally played it with the expansion. The expansion choices made the game go a completely different way than I have played before, which is good. I say it actually helps the game rather than hurting it.

Somehow takes a great game and makes it even better. Amazing addition to the framework of the original, and has given the game even more staying power.

Great additions to the game, and I think it makes you think about your strategy each game, rather than play one or two of your set strategies. Better than the original, both when used as random set up and select then play.

Only trouble, finding people to play it :-)

We've been playing a lot of Puerto Rico lately, so we decided to try out the buildings from the first expansion. We did a sort of "voting" process to determine which ones we should add in, and which ones to leave out. In the end, I think we used all but three of the new buildings.

Of the new buildings, the one that netted me the win was the Union Hall. So amazing that we were almost ready to declare it overpowered. I combined a corn strategy with the Union Hall, and it really didn't matter if I couldn't ship the half-dozen corn I was regularly producing. I got points for them anyway. If I could ship -- bonus! (I also find it pretty awesome that the Union Hall mechanism fits the theme so well. You get points even if your workers never actually do any work!) The Guest House got plenty of use, too. It was suggested by another player that the Aquaduct was very powerful, but I don't think anyone bothered with it.

Anyway, it was fun to mix in some new ones. I think we decided that next time we play, we'll put out all the buildings -- new and old -- and see what happens.

The expansion didn't add a whole lot. I do really like the Specialty Factory and Aqueduct though.

Breathes new life into Puerto Rico if you've played it to death. For such a small and cheap expansion it adds a huge amount of variation.(9)

For some unknown reason, I win with the expansion more easily and more often than I do with the basic game.

I almost always win if I get corn to start. I almost always lose with the 3rd Indigo. In this position on the first round often when it was my turn to choose the phase, I chose the plantations & then chose Quarry stone. I have started choosing corn when available, and am doing better, especially if I am able to follow this up with producing coffee next. And sometimes buying corn even if I have the first Indigo, has given me some of my highest scores. None of this works if I don't get a small storage plus a wharf, or just a large storage.

In all the games I have played, I don't remember myself or anyone else breaking 100, although I've come close.
