So far, it seems to add a nice twist to a GREAT game. None of the cards are too powerful, yet they add an element of risk/reward which I find intriguing. For example, you might take one more building card so you can obtain an aristocrat the next round, only to have one of the new cards pop up instead. I'm looking forward to many more plays. It's difficult to rate for me because St. Pete itself is so perfect, so I stick with ten for the original and a nine for this version. Update: played the original a couple times recently and realized that I enjoy the variant even more, so it's up to a ten too!

The best euro I've played for resource management. It's a great filler game at gaming conventions, at a club, between friends, or even for the family. This expansion adds cards that change up the balance a bit and give the basic game more depth. Highly recommended.

For a little variety, add these cards to your St. Petersburg game. You might not want to play the basic game ever again.

Outside of the context of the game, I had significant reservations about this expansion. In play, however, it's a marvelous fit. Mining discards and things like that work quite nicely in the St. Pete framework.

It doesn't add that much really to the game, but we always play with it. I like the extra little bit of anticipation you get turning over cards - especially if you're low on cash. Glad we got it.

I've been on this site for 10 years now, and I'm far from sick of games, but I think I am, to some degree, sick of learning too many new games. I'm also tired of playing 4+ hr multiplayer games, but I'll still happily play really long games 2 player.

[5 plays] After my first several (2 player) games using this expansion, I know for sure that we will continue using it as standard equipment. It can significantly alter how we approach certain situations. More time will tell which cards are better values. Short review is that it is fun and offers some new choices and interesting decisions.

Most recent play 8-7-06 with Garrett.

I have created a player aid here on BGG, especially helpful if you have the German text cards.

Some interesting cards to spice things up. There is nothing particularly unbalancing, though the double points/money card can be quite powerful with the right card. I like how the added cards (especially the free ones) produce some uncertainty in the aristocrat deck, further weakening the Observatory. And who wouldn't want to buy the Czar Superstar?

Update: After a bunch of further play, I always want to use these cards and feel that they improve the game. I miss them when they're not in the deck! It makes me look forward to the new expansion.

Adds a little extra fun to the base game, but doesn't change things too drastically. I like it.

A fun expansion to a great game. The mechanics change a bit with the action-cards but they aren't too powerful. It doesn't make the game very much better, but I can't find any reason to not add this to the game...

Great addition to a solid game. The cards add just the right twist to the game, the game retains it's original feel with a slight change in flavor.

As this is half of the newer expansion "New Society & Banquet" the only comment I have is that this part is not really as good as the other.

I think the Banquet expansion puts a fair number of mechanisms in place to help out some of the weaknesses of basic St. Petersburg. The ability to raid the discard deck, take a double turn, skip others and go first, all allow a player who has had a run of bad luck to get back into things. For 2 player games I would consider this to be optional, but for 3 and especially 4 player games I think this expansion is a must use.

Played it a couple of times. First impression: if you have a hand limit of 3, the special cards can take up valuable space while you wait for a good time to use them. "Weg Damit" (discard a card from your hand) isn't really that good, and I'd probably avoid taking it. "Schwarz Markt" (draw a card from the discard pile) is fantastic for picking up a noble that another player has upgraded -- an extra noble could be worth up to 10 points at the end of the game. The "I'll go first" card is great for picking up an Observatory or a noble, and the "take 2 turns" card can be great if you're already going first, because then you can get an extra noble or worker when another player thought they were going to get one.

I think the new Rio Grande expansion (which includes this) will be better, because of the more expensive Observatories and other new cards.
