Another great expansion - that ratchets up the challenges, while offering new rewards (new cards, rewards for defeating foes on the battlefield). So far have 1 play (4 player) with basic set this expansion.

Rated relating to the fact that'd I'd always use this expansion if playing the original. Seems to really add a lot of choices, which is exactly what is needed. The benefits of defeating an enemy open up a lot of possibilites. If you like the base game and/or F&F, definitely get this.

What I love here is how it creates a new kind of decision matrix for the game. Instead of just draining a resource or two, you have to sort out priorities and risks, and look downstream. It creates some tangled permutations, which is great, and different from the base game or F&F.

On the downside, it's a bit pricey, I guess, but worse is that the thematic integration is basically non-existent, and needn't have been: the description mentions the Chamber of Mazarbul; why not label it on the battlefield?

But I think the biggest issue, and it really is unfortunate, is the overall game balance and integration of all the expansions. It's just so woolly at this point that I despair of ever figuring out what starting level actually works properly. That's not a property of this expansion, which I think is actually the best standalone, but of the series as a whole.

Nicely integrated in the game. The best expansion of the 3 for me (if you play only one): it drives the game far away for its linear scheme and enhance the cooperative aspect (think all together to a solution to this crisis). I will not play without it now!
The only drawback is the abstract side (and the lack of sentences for background on the boards). Additionnal cards for Sauron and the battlefields could have been great too...

Rating based on how it affects the base game.

Battlefields is great. Love the triggers. Love the increased decision tree. This one has the increased tension of Sauron mixed with the control of F&F. This could very well be my favorite of the three - time will tell.

This adds quite a bit. It may be slightly too random for some, but I enjoy having to vary my strategy on the fly. Going into the first game, I thought I had a reasonable strategy, but it runs out seemingly straightforward ideas are not necessarily the best, it would appear. This expansion is compatible with all others, or can work standalone. (Although it may be suicide to try all three expansions at once!) My initial impression is that this expansion is very hard, although it is probably like the other expansions (Sauron in particular) in that it requires a shift in strategy.

The best expansion for a great game. Finally, after two other expansions, you get to assemble the Fellowship entire. As has been stated ad nauseam elswhere, the battlefields are abstract flowcharts, a fact that bothered me at first—but all doubt fled as we commenced play. We played two games back-to-back and I didn't even notice. It felt very much like arraying troops for battle. Shouts of "Get Aragorn on the left flank," and "We need Gandalf in there NOW!" were common. Cries of triumph erupted from the group when an enemy was supposed to be activated but was already dead or hemmed in by the warrior heroes of the Fellowship. Likewise, the first time the Balrog turned up in Moria we crapped our pants.

What at first appears to be a Power Point presentation on the logic flow of an abstraction of a "battle" mechanic concept actually turns out to be the other five members of the Fellowship coming to the rescue, leading to real feelings of elation and dread as they give their all to delay the forces of darkness long enough to let the Hobbits run for their lives.

Highly recommended.

UPDATE: I may have sold this expansion somewhat short in my comments below. I'm looking out to try it again sometime.
---
UPDATE: I've taken my rating down to a 7. I like the tension the new expansion gives the game, and I think it makes for some more tough trade-offs, and I'm glad to own it. But it's just so themeless, or even badly-themed at times (unusual for a Knizia game - he may sometimes give us weak or thin themes, but almost never does he deliver themes that are actively *bad*). Some boards with some more lively or evocative art would have helped a lot. It's still fun, but easily the weakest of the Lord of the Rings expansions, in my opinion.
---
After one play ... I dunno. It was nice because it added another layer of difficulty to the game, more and tough decisions to make. I can't really give it less than an 8 just because the base game is so good. But of all the expansions, this one seems the most abstract, the least thematically interesting. Maybe it'll grow on me, but for the first time through, playing the battleboards seems more like working out flowcharts than adventuring in Middle Earth.

Again, I still like it, because I think it adds a lot of decision-making depth to the core game, and helps to bring that palpable fear to the table again after so many run-throughs of the basic game. But Lord of the Rings and the first two expansions were so good thematically, it's a shame that Battlefields seems less tight in that respect. For example, the battleboard that corresponds to Shelob's Lair is the Pellanor Fields; the pieces you use on that board are Gandalf, Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, and Boromir. But Boromir was of course dead at that point, and Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli played only minor roles there, with the heroes of that battle being Theoden, Eowyn, Eomer, and Gandalf. Plus, many of the Pellanor Fields events are on the Mordor board, not Shelob's Lair (timewise, the battle does correspond more to the Mordor board - Frodo and Sam noticed the stars and the clearing of the skies, which corresponded to the Ride of the Rohirrim, while hiding in a hole in Mordor). All these thematic inconsistencies are a bummer, especially given the attention to detail in the base game and the expansions; but it could have been forgiven, or at least significantly mitigated, if at the very least some more visually interesting battleboards had been provided. As it is, the battleboards are too generic, and the foe tokens are often too murky to identify.

Less fussy than the Friends and Foes expansion, this essentially adds a "mini-game" that takes place at the end of a player's turn, where collected tiles activate bad guys who roam according to movement arrows around a seperate battle board, causing havoc depending on what spaces they land on. It's up to the active player to spend resources to activate good guys who will stand in the way. Keeping this job limited to the active player keep this moving quickly, and the fact that you can't even put the ring on to save yourself is pretty harsh medicine. Thankfully, they included a "place hero" step in the second half of a player's turn to help ease the card drain. At first glance, I thought this was going to make the game impossible, but after trying it a few times, I've realized it's actually a bit less daunting than Friends and Foes, since here you can at least see where the bad guys are going to go next, at least giving you a chance to prepare. Can't wait to try them all together now.

This is by far the hardest addition to the base game. We tried it together with F&F and didn't get out of Bree before Sauron killed us. A second play went better, but I (Frodo) died in Helm's deep and my wife (Sam) couldn't stop Sauron from getting the Ring somewhere down in Shelob's Lair. Only on the fourth play we finally got all the rules right and that in itself meant that we survived into Mordor. Nowhere near destroying the ring though.

Well, as I'm sure you've heard before, this expansion does break with the theme a bit, but it's actually pretty good and, in classic LOTR form, expands on the game's choices nicely without exactly adding to the difficulty.

Observations:

To me it doesn't feel at all like a "flowchart" (here's that term again!) but rather like a tactical representation in a war-room. Excellent! The term 'Battlefields' was a spot on choice.

In my opinion, full colour artwork as a background would not be functional at all. The monochromatic background makes the tokens stand-out and improves the readability and thus the ease of analysis. I wouldn't want a game to be spoiled by overlooking a token.

I would have liked the inclusion of more enemy-tokens though. For instance 2 sets per scenario which are drafted before play.

Very good expansion, which enhances the base game. It makes the game really harder, though. I do not know how this game manages it, but although the "battle fields" are purely abstract, I still get the feeling of enemies approaching and causing harm, if not one of the heros fights them.

It is much fiddlier than the Friend's and Foe's expansion but it certainly creates a more challenging game. *Update* After 3 plays I'm starting to get the hang of the board. We still aren't close to beating it with F&F but I think with just the base game we could do it. *Update - I've beaten the game solo (2 hobbits) and jar011 and I beat it once so that makes it 2-15 so far. I'm lowering my rating to an 8 due to frustration.

Adds a lovely new twist to the standard game, making for some extra decisions. Works well with or without any of the other expansions, which is important. However, it doesn't add enough (for me) to be worth always adding to the standard game (at least, not compared to the Foes.)

Experienced players will appreciate the level of nuance and complexity that the Battlefield expansion adds to the game's decision tree. Also, the expansion ratchets up the sense of creeping doom and hopelessness. I love that. What I'm less excited about is the clinical and abstract "look and feel" of the expansion. Whereas Friends and Foes enriched the thematic immersion of the game, Battlefields risks removing players from the flow of the game's storyline. It's not entirely clear what's being represented on the battlefield boards. I guess there's some kind of chaotic mass battle happening, but it happens continuously, in parallel to all the other events of the game. And that doesn't make any sense at all. So I'm enjoying the Battlefields expansion immensely, but I would only recommend it to players who are willing to sacrifice a good bit of narrative cohesion in exchange for increased tension and more multivariate decisions.

Note that combining the Battlefields expansion with the Friends & Foes expansion makes for an extremely challenging game. Even experts will probably want to start Sauron at 15 - and probably still lose.

Most abstract of all of the expansions to LOTR. Played along with Friends & Foes it makes you play the game in an entirely different way or you will get buried in the demand for your resources. Interestingly, we play Friends & Foes Battlefields for one type of challenge and play Sauron Base game for an entirely different kind of challenge. The two play completely different yet the quality of the gaming experience is consistely an '8' across the board.

If you feel that the basic game+friends&foes is becoming too easy, add this hellish expansion, and go back to the days when the game wiped the table with your Hobbits...

Very well done, but not as immersive as the basic game or F&F; on the contrary, it gives the game a mathematic and abstract feeling (hence the 8 instead of the 9).

You add a new side board to each scenario and each event or main line move triggers the placement or the movement of enemy pieces on the side board, moving from spot to spot causing bad things - corruption, Sauron, card loss, etc. You manage it by playing two stars to kill something, or fight cards to place hero pieces that block or defeat an enemy when next they move. Anyway, they provide a constant menace and you pretty much have to deal with them, as the loss of two stars to kill one of the five enemies is usually a lesser cost than having the enemies move around the Battlefield unmolested. And as we found out, regardless of which approach you take - events or main line - by the end of the scenario, the enemies will have moved around a whole bunch causing a whole mess of loss.

In the end, it's just another abstract way to suck out your best cards and generally make life harder for the hobbitses, but the positive is that it attempts to bring the non-hobbit characters into the game as pieces helping out on the board rather than being just cards, addressing one orf the earlier criticisms. It's not an "essential" expansion, but good for variety.
