This is essentially an abstract side-game bolted on to the base game. It's as if Knizia took a wholly separate game like Kingdoms and decided to attach it to Lord of the Rings as an expansion. It plays well and is interesting, but from a production standpoint it feels half finished. The battlefield boards are poorly illustrated and don't have any kind of tie-in to the story - they are just abstract flowcharts. No events, no geographic tie ins, nothing to bind them to the story at all. You are literally solving a logic puzzle with a couple of LOTR illustrated pieces on it. That said, the gameplay is solid and engaging. Will I buy it? No, probably not. Will I play it? Sure, but I think the game is really at its peak with F&F only. Sauron and Battlefields are both kind of misses for me. Also, this does not integrate well with the Sauron or Friends & Foes expansions. Sauron doesn't integrate well because Sauron has no control over the battlefields stuff at all. Friends & Foes does not integrate well because Battlefields is just a more complicated version of Friends & Foes. But without F&F you miss out on Bree and Isengard. Base Game F&F is still the best experience in my opinion.

I've read the reviews, sounds like a good addition. I hope to get it at some point.

Love the new decisions here. Making the "main track sprint" a lot more painful is a stroke of genius.
