Homemade copy. Awesome!

A nice change of pace for Hansa, which I always felt suffered a bit from having a static board. The game-ending bonus points add some extra goals to keep in mind, though I feel this board is a bit more difficult to navigate. I rate this slightly higher than the original.

UPDATE: I now rate both the original and this variant map a "10," although I think the bonus scoring options improve the game with their added tension.

But either way, either map, Hansa is, in my opinion, Schacht's best design and a new classic that will hopefully see a new English publication since Uberplay closed its doors.

plays are from MaBiWeb. Not sure if I like this expansion. The new routes and movement are good to change the game up, but the end game bonus items just don't feel right. It was a great tactical exercise in maximization, but being rewarded for loading up a city with more booths and selling more of the worst valued goods seems a bit odd to me. Players were already getting more points from spreading out, so the bonus 4 points just makes it even more critical to get into 8 or 9 cities every game. I'm not sure what the end game bonus items really add...what am I missing?

The more I play this version the more I find I like it more than the original.

I really appreciate how Michael Schacht continually refines his games after they come out and make these expansion free on his web site. Make sure you try this at www.MaBiweb.com where there is a full implementation of this available.

This variant opens up the board a lot, taking away some of the screwage potential. Very rarely will you have turns where you can't do anything positive.

So far, I'm finding this variant map and rules for Hansa interesting. However I've only played online.

Printed, mounted & played as an alternative map. I only play Hansa with the expansion and extra endscore rules, so you can the arrows in every direction, when you pay 2 Taler.

A nice change! The addition of more arrows on land and sea and the ability to travel against the arrow both seem to open the map up. You're now playing more of the game (i.e., more moving to good ports and buying/selling goods) and less the map, if that makes any sense (e.g., in the basic game, control of Reval and Riga can be overly important, especially in the 2-player game). The scoring bonuses give you something else to keep your eye on -- you CANNOT ignore them since they can result in a pretty big point swing (up to 10 points, for example, if you take the lead in number on 1-barrel goods sold from someone). I think this works better with 3- or 4-players, where it seems to balance things out better (less turn-order-screwage) with the added end-game bonuses. With 2, I'd probably prefer the original game?

Map Changes
1. Several arrows have been changed and new ones added
2. Some cities have a different number of goods tokens

Rule Changes
1. Ship movement:
* 2 coins: move the ship against the arrow direction
2. Endgame Bonuses (generous ties -- all tied players earn points)
* 2 points: tallest stack of market booths
* 3 points: triggered the end of the game (RESUPPLIED from the last pile)
* 4 points: most cities with 1 or more market booth
* 5 points: sold the most one barrel goods

A variant map / scoring rules for Hansa that can be selected at http://www.mabiweb.com.

This rule set raises my Hansa rating (6) a bit. Hansa, by itself, is just a bit tight sometimes (particularly if you have a really good player on your right who adeptly denies you opportunities). This option opens the game up just enough (for me).

Nice change from the city connections in basic Hansa. The scoring bonuses really change the strategies and add tension. Still too abstract and dry to hit the table often.

I'm a sceptic about expansions and new maps. Having said that, this map does bring a bit of variation to Hansa. The new rules allowing a move against the wind and awarding bonus points for a variety of new things do add some interest.

12/20/14 Played using the is alternate board and the "against the wind for 2 gold" rule.

Using the alternate board and the "against the wind" rule was a nice change of pace. But truth be told if you use the against the wind rule you really don't need the alternate board. So my rating of the new board is only a 6. A nicety, but not that big a deal.

It's nice that Schacht came up with a new map for an old game and I was happy to try something a bit different using the same mechanics as Hansa, but I didn't think that this map really added much to the experience or changed it significantly in any way. It also just served to confuse me at times as I couldn't go the route I was used to. I'd definitely be interested in seeing more new Hansa maps, but set in different places around the world.
