Improves my favorite game of all time. The new cards provide even more interesting choices and actually balance the game further by reducing the value of the Mistress and increasing the cost of the Judge. Superb!

Saint Petersburg is my #1 game and this expansion is a must buy. The new cards add more choices and excitement to an already great game. The artwork fits right into the basic game and the value adjustments on the original cards make sense and work well.

The new rule for having more than 10 Aristocrats is really nice. Now you get and additional 10VP for each distinct Aristocrat above ten. In 2 player games, it was pretty easy to get 10 Aristocrats - now you have reason to try for more.

This is an exciting expansion that improves the base game, while keeping the original flavor and mechanics the same. This is what an expansion should be.

This is fantastic. The new workers and other cards add a nice twist to the game. Aristocrats are still important, but less powerful. This expansion provides more viable options and makes a great game even stronger.

Have just played with New Society expansion because it offered the most cards (and added 2 of the Potemkin village cards from the other expansion). A 2-player game now becomes longer which feels better. You can score points for > 10 aristocrats, with the longer gameplay (and more rubles) the buildings become more important. There is card allowing you to go thru the discard stack every building phase, a building card that gives you one point for every aristocrat you have, multiple cards in the basic game get replaced and have been subtley altered - e.g., the Observatory is now more costly. The Theater upgrade that used to give you a ruble for every noble now gives you a point for every noble (much better). It was a fun departure especially if you have played the basic game a lot.

Ratings for New Society: 10

The New Society expansion fixes a couple of cards which were problematic in the original, and adds a few more different interesting cards. Also it adds enough cards for 5 players.

For 4 and 5 players, play with the whole New Society expansion (but not the Banquet cards). For 2 or 3 players, the expansion lasts a bit too long. Use the suggested variant where 1 of each basic card in the green, blue, and orange decks are removed.

Ratings for the Banquet: 5

A lot of the strategy of St. Petersburg is whether or not to take that an extra card so that you'll get that worker or aristocrat. The purple cards completely messes up that tension and pretty much make it a random game. If you do not like the strategic tension in St. Petersburg, then this will certainly change that. But otherwise it destroys the rhythm of the game.

We finally played the game with just the New Society cards and we really enjoyed the game. Mystery Bob was running away with the win (as always) but I managed to snag some good cards after acquiring a Debtor's Prison card in the last 1/4 of the game. It came out REALLY close and I think I won, but I believe we got a few rules wrong that I already inquired about in a thread on the game page.

Even if I played wrong, I believe the points differential would have been possibly only 5 points. So I either one by 6 or lost by 5.

Sycophant is good to keep in your hand and buy in the last Trading phase to get another unique Aristocrat!

UPDATE: I did get the rules wrong on the blue Trading House card. So, Mystery Bob did win (again!) which he deserved to do since he had such an awesome tableau going on. He did have an early observatory which he utilized to its full potential!!!!

The card changes gave balance to the game. I have only played with the Banquet expansion a few times. I like the cards but they bring a lot of chaos into the game when you are planning on going first and now you are not...etc.

I like it but others that I play with do not.

I like the New Society expansion for adding the 5th player and thereby making the game extremely more challenging. The new farmer worker cards are very interesting as well as some of the other card value revisions for 5 players and new trader card upgrades available. The Banquet expansion I play sometime for amusement but don't take too seriously since it unbalances the game a lot; but it is fun to have out from time to time for something different and a good addition in that regard.

I will never play SP without this expansion again. The only drawback is that the new cards are clearly recognizeable from their (lighter colored) backsides. This is very annoying. Manhood lands on the moon, but print shops aren't able to print identic colors in two different print runs. LOSERS!!!

5 Player game works well. Have only played with the expansion with extra buildings but it works well and gives the game a good length - still ends fast but lets you feel like you have a little more time to get things done. Also buildings which I previously completely ignored are now necessary.

I think it is more balanced, particularly the Observatory, and new stuff like the Sycophant and the New Farmer is very interesting (though I am still unsure whether the New Farmer is actually worthwhile). And I really like playing with five. And the game has much the same feel as the original, though it's hard to get used to remembering the fifth player. Even without five, the game is quite different because it is longer and that changes the timing. This is great stuff. Seriously considering bumping this up to a 10. Playing with both expansions and four players increases the length and arc of the game, making it more of a gamer's game than heretofore.(4 plays)

Such a mixed bag:

Fifth Player: thumbsdown St. Pete shouldn't be played with that many people.

The Banquet: thumbsupthumbsdown Okay for a little variety, but unnecessary, and kind of messes up the rhythm of the game.

New Society: thumbsup Great set of additional (and replacement) cards that expands the available strategies for an already great game. I like it and can't see playing without these cards. St. Petersburg is an unforgiving game, and if you fall behind, it's very hard to catch up. But in a recent two-player game with the New Society expansion, we saw the lead change several times, and the player who fell behind early, caught up, passed the leader and nearly pulled out a win, but fell behind in the final round.

So I want to try this a few more times, but it may actually solve the runaway leader "problem" with St. Pete.

Two-expansions-in-one including additional and replacement cards as well as the possibility to play with 5P. The "New Society" expansion provides interesting new cards for the game - overpowered cards (Mistress, Observatory) are now subdued while others give rise to new strategies and interesting decisions. Haven't tried "The Banquet" expansion yet though it seems to change the basic game a little more. This expansion set, mostly for "New Society" and the 5P possibility, feels essential for St. Petersburg but there's one major drawback - the price is quite high for an airy box with just a few cards and wooden figures. Also note that the card colors seem a little fainter than those in my copy of the basic game.

Improves an already fantastic game into a better one! The changes provide more meaningful decisions on every phase (no more "autopilot" mode that is sometimes felt with the original version). Every card type has improved balance and they did a wonderful job correcting the undefeatable early catch of the Mistress of Ceremonies card.

As for "The Banquet" card set, it's an okay diversion if players are a bit tired of the normal game. It's a bit wacky, but still fun (although it seems to decreases the tension the original had IMO). Now that there is a better expansion available, I would suggest players skip The Banquet and stick to either the original ruleset or the clever alternate Tom Lehmann & Co. has come up with here.

Furthermore, the game now supports 5 players which I can't wait to try. I love Saint Pete's, and like this even better. Grade: A

I like the ability to have 5 players. I the revaluing of some of the older cards, and I like additional cards except for the purple ones, I just don't think they add to the game. To put it another way, this game is so fine I just don't think it needs the purple cards.

9 points for New Society, 4 for Banquet. New Society adds the all-important 5th player and a few new cards; IMO this makes the game just a bit better than with 4 players, and actually a little bit faster! Banquet on the other hand seems to add nothing more but a bit of extra randomness to the game.

UPDATE: I like the new and improved regular cards and it does some sorely needed tweaking, but I really don't care for power cards in games because they're so darn random. My choice is to leave out the banquet cards and play with the regular cards.

Update: After my first play with the Banquet cards, I don't think they're all that great. Will try them a couple more times to see for sure.

Preliminary plays of this expansion are very positive. There's a lot of value in this box, despite what seems like pretty minimal contents at the outset.

It feels like they took at gook look at the game over time and put in some rules tweaks (esp. with the Mistress of Ceremonies and the Observatory, two really game-breaking cards) and modified a few other cards. I like the new cards but am still learning how to use them well. (I have not tried the Banquet cards yet, but I feel that even if those cards are a total waste, this expansion is still an excellent value.)

This expansion adds 36 new cards, and allows for a fifth player. This expansion combines 12 cards that were given out in a magazine; these 12 cards designed by Karl-Heinz Schmiel are referred to as "The Banquet". The other 24 cards were designed by Tom Lehmann, the designer of Race For the Galaxy; this expansion is referred to as "The New Society". The New Society includes a new worker, a 9 cost 1 VP farmer; there are six of them in the game. There is a new aristocrat, a 1 cost Sycophant, which generates income of -1. The Banquet cards consist of purple action cards. It takes an action to get them in your hand, then an action to play them. There is a banquet, that allows you to double the money and VP of any one card during the scoring phase, or there is a donkey card which gives you $5. The observatories have been replaced at a cost of 8; the mistress of ceremonies now gives $3 and 4VP. For the fifth player, there is a token which simply gives you 2 VP, rather than having a token that lets you go first in a phase.

I like the different choices provided by the expansion. The new farmers make decisions a bit more difficult. I didn't mind the original cost of the observatory and mistress of ceremonies, but they have been changed in this expansion. The banquet cards do add a luck factor if you take a card into your hand, thinking you will get an aristocrat, when one of the purple ones show up instead. This makes St. Petersburg an even better game, and it does work with five players. However, with five players, the aristocrats are scattered more evenly, so exchange buildings and buildings are the key to victory.
