I have seldom been quite as wrong about a game or expansion as this one. I think I originally rated it a 7? What the heck?
I wrote:
There are really not a lot of cards in this expansion. The solitaire version is the main attraction.

How fortunate then that one doesn't buy an expansion for the cards, but for what it does to the game. And despite the relatively small number of cards, Gathering Storm expands the strategy space of the base game as much as anything I've seen.
Some strategies are particularly well-suited to counteract the crank that drives the base game. Improved Logistics is potentially very valuable. Best used with a military strategy, but Replicant Robots is a viable alternative. There's a lot of new Alien cards too, which is a riskier line to pursue, but hella fun if it works.

(older comments about the solitaire game)

The solitaire version was not as interesting as I might have hoped - I didn't feel that the "abstraction" of the bot's actions gave me a real opportunity to play against it, you lose the whole leeching bit. Sometimes it seems like you might as well just roll dice to determine the bot's score, and then try to beat that. The different homeworlds don't seem very well-balanced for the bot. The bot is really good at turning the crank, arguably too good, (especially when running a military strategy) and not much else. Until you get to the hard level, and it kills you on $ by getting 27 points on 6-cost devs. So for example, I felt Ancient Race was the weakest homeworld for the bot on Easy, but quite nasty on Hard.

I really, really love this expansion. Unlike the later expansions for Race, I consider this essential. The solitaire game is just gravy - it allows one to become familiar with different lines. And the goals are pretty neat too.

This little expansion has added so much to the base game. The new cards (start worlds, six-point developments, etc.) have added much just to the original game.

I really like the goals. They add different strategies while playing the game. I know that there are those who dislike the goals. I can't see playing without them anymore.

I also like the solitaire game from this expansion.

All in all, a great expansion to a great game.

More of the good stuff. The best kind of expansion in that it doesn't so much alter the game as make it more of what it already is, makes it better by amplifying the best parts of the original.

Adding VP objectives to "fight" over (most planets, etc.) is probably the closest we'll get to direct confrontation in this system*... but then, it's an optimization race, not a brawl.

If you didn't like the game before, this won't do anything to change your mind—but if you do like it, this is a must.

mb

UPDATE: Sure, the "robot" is just a couple dice and a flowchart—but I hate him so much. Doesn't he understand that I can chuck his dice into the ocean and burn his smarmy card? DON'T THINK I WON'T

UP-UPDATE: I consider the base game the "training wheels" version and this the default. I've started new players here with good results as the additional overhead does not make the game opaque to the uninitiated.

Excellent expansion for an excellent game. The goals can give you direction when you are on the verge of two different strategies and if totally ignored, they will cost you the game (at least a 2 player game). The new cards are nice, it's always good to have more 6-devs for more variety of strategies. And new starting worlds is a plus. We always deal each player 1 military starting world and 1 normal starting world (unless playing with 5) and choose one of them after seeing the goals and the 6 starting cards.

I think this is a nice expansion to a great game. Since it came I added it to the base game and never play without it. I like that they added the tiles since it give players without an early strategy something to play for and sometimes makes other players go after the tiles instead of going after their primary strategy.

Love the new cards this adds to the game. I am not a fan of the goals, especially with 3+ players. I like that you can play with five players total, but I still love RftG as a 2 player game. It's the best!

This expansion makes Race a 10 for me. I'm not sure it will remain so after another 260+ plays but I'm going to enjoy finding out. *Update* After 269 plays I still think it's a 10 and only expect it to get better with the next expansion. My logged plays of Race for the Galaxy don't include my expansion plays.

A useful addition to the base game, despite the small number of new cards (about 20): makes some strategies more viable (Genetic, Alien, and Military), which increases the variety of the game.

The robot does not really feel like a real player, but the game is still challenging. The robot lacks the depth of a real player: analyzing the robot's game is easier, as you only have to keep an eye on its resource level and its production power, where you would also look at the types of the world of your opponent (and think about what 6-cost development he might play), or think about what action he might take based on the state of his production, on his number of cards, etc.

The goals are a nice addition: they give additional strategic and tactical options, that "color" (sometimes strongly) the general strategy that would be followed without the goals.

The expansion added new life to RftG - and it wasn't even dying! My only complaint is how the goals make game statistics so much harder to write and read.

(Fourteen games and I still haven't tried Improved Logistics. How sad is that?)

Adds a number of very interesting cards and opens up the possible strategies. I will always play RFTG with this expansion when given the choice.

I find the goals add to the randomness and much prefer to play without them. I don't use the solitaire robot at all.

This is a must have expansion. The new cards are few in number but they address some balance issues and keep the deck nicely even.

The real reward here is in the inclusion of Goals, the option for a 5th player and in the Solo Game option.

Perserverence against the Robot is mandatory but very rewarding.

Sold my base game and 1st 2 expansions to Evil Steve for $40 so I could have a new Galaxy of shiny when Brink of War is released.

This is a total rip off. If you have no interest in the solitaire version you just get a handful of cards and a few chits and a ton of blanks. If I wanted to make my own game I'd buy my own card sleeves and use paste ups.

That said, what useful bits it does come with are fantastic. They make the already fantastic game tremendous. It turns it from a 9 to a 10.

Suddenly a Military strategy can work well, the greens and yellows have better interlocking cards and the browns can get points picking the special tiles. Wonderful.

I'm glad I have it.

I wouldn't play the game without it (unless teaching the game to someone new).

Still, it's probably my least favourite of the RftG expansions. A bit too pricey for twenty-something cards - but they do change the game a lot, shifting strategies in new directions.

A bit tricky to rate, since different parts of the expansion rate differently. I would rate the new cards a 10, though, so that's enough to rate the whole thing 10 as well, I guess.

The cards really shake up the pace and the strategy space of the game by the way. Military and trade strategies, in particular, get huge boosts.

What I want - pretty robot mats! Maybe make them Alien invasion/Robot themed - the existing card is pure function. Then the various robot actions could be mapped to things like "Alien Conquest!" and "Assembly Line Overdrive!"

Pure Gold, but only one ounce. What you get is mostly great (I'm still meh on the robot), but it's sadly so little - so few cards, so few goals. Playing the game is a 10 against others, still undecided for the robot (but it's definitely less). But it definitely makes the base game better - I'd suggest throwing in the new cards as they won't change things too much (there's even a 5th player starter hand). I don't mind the goals, but they're extra.

I hope it appears tomorrow...Huzzah, finally arrived (Nov 1)!

The new cards are all the awesome I expected them to be. Definitely wish there were more (and the 6th player!) - the fistful of blanks are almost an insult. Sorry, but I imagine that very few people would need that many blanks, and most people will feel that were shortchanged actual playable cards (and I would agree).

The new action card colour is light blue - I love blue, but it seems like some other colour ought to have gotten the lurve...maybe magenta?

VP goal tiles are pretty "bland" - the colour scheme doesn't feel futuristic (and there's no art/name - you can feel it yelling "I'm a tacked on rush job"), and the "static" on the backs of the VP goal tiles is all kinds of ugly. It might be Agricolisis speaking, but I was expecting more combinations - I'm less than a half a dozen games in and they've become "samey".

First Impression: Expensive - the stuff you get looks good, but there's way too little of it. On the other hand, I love RftG too much to not buy.

Thanks to Darcy from Drexoll's in Vancouver!

Hope we don't have to wait another year for the next expansion

I'm feeling the sameness of the goal tiles - you're guaranteed repeats of the small ones, and almost certainly the large ones. And where's the cool art?!

The robot is ... distinctly meh. Definitely a tough opponent, but it feels distinctly swingy - whether it flips up huge points seems up to chance.

Box cover = stormy?!

The 1st expansion makes the game even better. It provides better balance between build and consume strategies, adds more variety in starting, and adds the extra complexity of goals. Too bad I cannot rate it an 11!

(Plays logged as the expansion are solo plays.)

I rate solo play an 8, but the expansion as a whole I rate a 10.

Very happy with this expansion - the new cards fill out some of the weaker strategies as well as introduce some new hybrid paths. This has refreshed the game for me, and in adding more options, made it even better than it was before.

I like the goal tiles - not quite as much as the cards - but I like them and will continue to play with them. The solo game is quite hard, but enjoyable for an occasional play.
