Add the Suaron expansion, and you have a bemused Sauron player anticipating the players' plans because of their open discussion in front of him!

Fantastic variation on the core rules. Makes every game a grudge match. Still possible for the Fellowship to win even with a competent Sauron player, and the sheer quantity of actions available to the Fellowship ensure every game is interesting.

Fantastic game. This expansion makes it longer and complex, but if you're up for it, more fun as well. Played once along with just the base set, and 15 times along with Friends and Foes.

* Played 5+ times. Adds a lot of challenge (how much should you talk about your cards with Sauron listening), options (should you work to delay the Black Riders), tension (I have to face an intelligent player instead of a faceless die?!). Before playing this I thought it was colossally overpriced. I don't think that anymore. This makes the game very rich indeed adding a new dimension to gameplay and the extra variety the game needs. Friends & Foes adds more meat to the game, this adds more flavor. Buy one or both. Incredible game system with incredible expansions. [f]

Wow! Does it all well. Thematically this rounds out the storyline and gameplay with an eye to bettering the tension as well as the mechnics and balance. Knizia knows how to strike a balance between randomness and decision-making.

The "black tiles" portion of the expansion makes the game *really* hard. Good for a challenge for very experienced players.

Like this a lot after a handful of games. There is a fair amount of subtelty to the Sauron position, with strategic trade-offs. Interesting contrast, in that Sauron's position is almost completely strategic while the Fellowship's position is largely tactical. Haven't played either the combined game (I'd think the Fellowship would need every advantage, 5 players plus both bonus cards), or the "black" event tiles yet.

Brings a totally new dynamic to the game. There's still a cooperative element but now is a lot more challenging. AI is no match for human intelligence! Both sides are playing very different games and that keeps the game very fresh - can easily alternate between playing the Fellowship and Sauron in different games.

It is so much better to have Sauron as an active player.

More permutations of components to juggle with will allow you to plan the difficulty of the game. You need to have played the basic game to be able to handle the changes, but after an easrly play (without the 23 extra events), we had a very exciting finish. Everyone found that having a bad guy in person added an edge to the game that was missing when he was only represented in the abstract.

Certainly makes the game tougher - another way to lose, but no extra way to win. Giving Sauron a face personalizes the enemy. Recommended.

Ups the ante even more on an already challenging game. The Lord of the Rings game and its expansions are favorites when our game group gets together. Also popular among the ladies in the group.

So far, we've played twice using the basic rules plus the Sauron expansion, and we loved it. It didn't make things more difficult for us, but it enhanced the thematic feeling, and Sauron is a much more exciting foe when he's run by a player.

With Friends and Foes, the Sauron expansion makes the LotR game feel complete with multiple challenges for the Fellowship to keep track of and a sentient malevolence working against them.

We were so used to the cooperative nature of the main game that we were unprepared for the hatred and scorn directed toward the Sauron player. I personally felt "bad" when playing as Sauron, killing off my friends and essentially ending the game for them.

This expansion ROCKS!

Well, I loved the basic game and this makes it even better. The only drawback is that my wife always insists on playing Sauron (should I be worried about this?). A great game!

A superb addition to the base game. The player posing as Sauron always sits right next to you and listens to every single plan that you devise. Very intriguing.

Tough expansion to a great game. Combined with Friend & Foes creates numerous possibilities for each gaming session. Its only fault is putting a competitive element into a cooperative game system. Still a great addition.

This removes the solitaire aspect of the game and makes it a true contest between players. Granted all but one of them get to "gang up" on the last one, but it still improves the overall game, IMHO. It takes a solid game and makes it even more enjoyable.
