The base game of Alhambra is a middling light strategy game, but the 20 (!) variants published so far can turn it into a brain-burner. You can add a single variant for flavor, or you can mix-and-match your favorites.

I think Power of the Sultan may be the best expansion yet. All four variants are easy to learn but have a signficant impact on gameplay. Also, moreso than the previous expansions, these four variants really complement each other well, adding lots of strategies and tactics to the game, with the "culture wheels" being the best.

It's funny that I'm calling this an improvement because it clearly takes Alhambra into "do-a-bunch-of-things, get-a-bunch-of-points" territory, which I usually don't like.

Amazing. This expansion is great! It's probably the best expansion for Alhambra, which may come surprsing considering it's expansion #5.

All elements of the expansion (variable score cards, tiles of Moorish art, power of sultan cards and income-producing caravans) make Alhambra much more gamer's game. What's the most important they add new dimensions to the game. Thus they increase the number of choices and possibilities. It can take a while to look at the game from new perspectives and adjust one's strategy/-ies.

If you found Alhambra just a bit repetitive and well... boring, try this expansion. It really spices up the game. And if it gets my wife to play with me, it deserves at least an 8. She really enjoys it and I've grown to like it.

There is an increase in the amount of point earning opportunities and purchasing power. The dynamics of the original game are changed considerably.

Nice expansion. The best part of this expansion is that it allows you to change the scoring system. This brings new and interesting strategies to this nice game. Highly recommended because of the change in scoring!!!

Great Expansion - I think it is the best as all 4 modules add something significant to the thinking and planning required.

Culture Counters are a real nice mix, the alternate scoring tiles offer great variability.

The Caravanasi cards offer a nice opposition to the majority scoring rules and the Bonus Building Collector Cards are a nice money sink.

All great stuff.

-Die Karawanserei (the Caravan).

We misplayed these due to the wording of the rules in the big box edition. The rules claim it takes an action to advance the caravan marker. This is, in fact, an automatic occurrence, not an action the prevents you from taking other actions that turn. Will report back once we get the chance to play this one properly.

-Die Künste der Mauren (the art of the Moorish).

This expansion is excellent. Adds good new turn options and a second axis to consider for each building purchase.

-Die macht des Sultans (the power of the sutan).

Cute idea, but the die interaction seems a little clunky.

-Die neuen Wertungskärtchen (the new valuecards).

Have not yet tried, though I'm skeptical of this one.
***

I've only tried the art of the moors so far, but that one alone makes this expansion box worth while.

The New Score Cards merely introduces different criteria during each scoring, thereby forcing players diversify their buildings. It does not feel like adding much, if anything to the base game.

The Power of the Sultan gives players the option to snatch a new building in return for a sultan card, which can be bought for 7 dollars of the appropriate currency. It certainly ups the intensity of the game and is a worthwhile addition to the game.

The Caranvanserai gives players extra money. It does give players some additional flexibility with regards to purchasing buildings, but the book-keeping bit of it is a little tacky.

The Art of the Moor provides yet another avenue for scoring, this time via the cost of each buildings. Buildings of the same cost will give its owner some points. It provides an extra element to balance, in addition to winning the type of building and ensuring your walls are continuous. Mildly interesting.

(All plays under Alhambra)

I rate the base game a 7 right now, but using the Caravanserai and Power of Sultans mini expansions from here definitely elevates it a little. Not quite to an 8, but it's close. I don't see any point in the new score cards, while we're yet to try The Art of the Moors.

Expansion #5 - Power of the Sultan . . . . Obtained 01/30/09

02/21/09 I used The New Score Cards and The Power of the Sultan modules. I rate them both a 7. 08/08/09 I used The Art of the Moors and The Caravanserai modules. I rated them a 7 and an 8, respectively. So overall I rate this expasion a 7. The Art of the Moors is a meaty module, that can generate a huge amount of points. But it does add time to a game, Something like 30 additional minutes in our case. 09/24/11 I used The New Score Cards and The Power of the Sultan modules again.

Four expansions that range from not that great to a pretty good idea. If Alhambra is played with all four of these, you've changed the essential nature of the game from a good family strategy type of game to a good advanced strategy game.
The Caravanserai: an excellent idea, allowing players an extra way to gain funds....but you're not sure until you've actually bought the caravan what money you can actually get, thereby lessening the value of this expansion for me: 6.5.
The Art of the Moors: definitely the best expansion in the pack. It opens up new strategies by allowing players to focus on the original building costs of their completed buildings, and acquire extra VP that way: 7.9.
The Power of the Sultan: the worst of the pack. A very random means of acquiring tiles automatically when they are drawn, which can make the game really lopsided: 5.5.
The New Value Cards: totally changes the way buildings are scored during scoring rounds, in that they no longer rise in value necessarily, but may decline and then rise again in the final scoring. This definitely makes things far more tricky to calculate: 7.

It's my least favorite of the expansions, if only because the modules here really seem like they'll start to feel arbitrary in the game, in particular 'The Art of the Moors' which adds a culture counter mechanic with spinning chits on docking strips, which gives a scoring boost. 'The Power of Sultan' seems cool, but I don't know how often I'd voluntarily use this one either. 'The Caravanserai' is one I'd consider, I like the interesting purchase options it gives you, and is fairly intuitive. Also comes with new variable score cards to change it up if you've really played the game THAT much, and overview cards to use with some of the modules.

Caravans -- just okay. The cards give you "free money", but they lack flexibility so they are mostly tactical (i.e. you buy them when you need 1 or 2 in a money in order to buy, then you hope that that particular color of caravan (money) proves to be useful during the rest of the game).

Power of the Sultan -- okay and maybe good. The cards allow you first dibs on a particular color building and this can be very powerful, but the fact that all of them are cost '7' seems a bit arbitrary and annoying... perhaps the designer chose '7' since it's the approximate mid-point of tile values. The randomness of changing the building color for these cards is probably a turn-off for some people. This variant adds a bit of certainty (strategy) but plenty of randomness (tactics) as well.

The fifth expansion is Alhambra: Power of the Sultan and is centered around the Sultan bringing his unique abilities into the game for the players to use. While this expansion offers several interesting ideas into the game, there is only one piece that I use on a regular basis.

The individual pieces of this expansion are -

Power of the Sultan - This expansion is just a few cards that are added to the draw deck. These cards show the different colors of building tiles in the game. A die is rolled to pick which color of building each card associates with when drawn. These cards can then be purchased and allow the player to freely build the associated color of building. To me this seems a much longer and more complicated way of just buying a building. I do not play with this expansion.

Score Cards - These cards mix up the scoring order of the different colored building tiles. Although simple, this adds a new twist to the game. I like this expansion and use it often.

Caravan - This expansion is just 8 cards that can be purchased and serve as a money making device. I think there is plenty of money available in the game and making more money is not really required. I do not play with this expansion.

Art of the Moors - This is an odd expansion that brings another scoring mechanic into the game. Bonus points are awarded when players buy tiles that have the same price as tile they already own. The problem is that this expansion does not differentiate the players enough and players end up scoring about the same number of bonus points. I do not play with this expansion.

Modules in order of preference: New score cards, power of the sultan, caravansarai, culture counters

New score cards: These cards change the value of the different colors in each scoring round. It makes the game a lot more challenging... we liked them a lot and plan to use them often.

Power of the Sultan: Adds a random die element. You can buy cards that will give you a free tile of a particular color, though that color is determined by a die roll. I just found this expansion to be okay.

Caravansarai: Adds cards that can be used to build up currency of a particular color. Adds an upkeep phase that we forgot to use half the time. We both felt this module was kind of dumb.

Culture counters: Give you another thing to keep track of so you can add to your score. My least favorite of all the expansions.
