Stefan Feld games are balanced and mathematically elegant while being obtuse, emotionally detached, and mechically inelegant. The most overrated designer of modern games. The King of JASE.

Now, that's an expansion! It gives so much to Keltis, it's unbelievable. Keltis itself was great. But after the expansion you can see that it was straightforward. Expansion is much deeper and brings more strategy and careful planning.
Like in Keltis we play with tokens face down.

Good idea, to reniew the game by simply replacing the board. With the new paths, you lose in simplicity what you gain in choices and possibilities. It's nice to have both and to decide the type of game you want.

Better than original Keltis. More control and more options over piece movements leading to more agonizing decisions.

Initial impression is that this must rank as one of the best "expansions" ever. It's basically a completely new game to play with the same deck of cards and similar scoring concepts. The same general heuristics will stand you in good stead for the expansion, but you have to be much more sensitive to tactical board layout issues in the expansion than you had to be in the basic game. The expansion lacks Keltis straightforward elegance, but also is definitely a game with more subtlety to it than the original. Not sure I'd call it better or worse than Keltis, but it's definitely different.

These follow-on Keltis products (Kartenspiel, Mitbringspiel, Keltis expansion) have really cemented my opinion - if any further demonstration was really needed - that Knizia towers over his contemporaries as a brilliant game designer. All four games use the same basic idea, of risk management and tiered scoring, but all play substantially differently, with different nuances, different tradeoffs, and different feels, that they are all distinct and worthwhile games. Where other designers simply re-use good ideas, Knizia does themes and variations.

An alternative game board, plus a set of bonus chips, for Keltis. Game mechanics are virtually identical, but the game board is substantially different, and game play feels very different. The paths intersect at many places, allowing the player markers to jump colours, potentially having more than one marker advancing up the same track. There is a new set of chips to use on the new board - the usual bonus chips (including one new type that allows you to discard from a meld or hand), and a set of different coloured wishing stones. Points are slightly different - different coloured stones, as well as sets of three of a kind, both now score points. An added wrinkle is once a points plateau is reached (5, 8), advancing further decreases your score until the next plateau ... so do you push for more points or rest on what you've got in the bank. A much deeper and more interesting game board, that greatly improves on the linear nature of the base game. The base game is great for families, this board ramps it up with the increased options... highly recommended.

Thoroughly enjoyed this expansion. It's a far more interesting game than the original. You've got a ton of difficult decisions to make in this one.

It's a whole new game. Don't know that I would ever play the original game board as the new board adds so much to the play.
