Lovely Steam expansions for two players and a bonus one for four players as well, with some rule changes, so the basic game will not get boring. Both two player maps have an interesting mechanism of bribes, which makes both maps very tough - which is great. I actually prefer the South Carolina, with the additional excellent twist of paying for deliveries, while Georgia Reconstruction perhaps has too many special rules. Oklahoma Land Rush is in my opinion the weakest of all three maps.

ASL ... yes, this is my Desert Island Game. If I have to give up all my 3000+ games and only allowed to keep one, this would be it. This bloody game stood the test of time. Around for more than 25 years - simply the best.

Only played GA map thus far, which is a solid 2p map. There was tension on the board and even in the auction.

Oklahoma landrush: field full of cubes, go west, specialize in one or two colors to deliver. Urbanization as a nasty blocking action. Interesting map for a change and it is worth playing from time to time, but it will not become one of my favorites. Ultimately it is too dependent on who gets his delivery colors blocked the most, which means it is not a map with much tension or close finishes. Rating 7

South Carolina: Interesting variation. Blind bidding for turn order with cubes yellow or purple. The gameplay on the board is only with blue, red and grey cubes. Deliveries cost 1 money. Set up is flexible, as cities are placed at the start. The only action available is engineer for the first player. Winning first turn and engineer is important especially in the beginning. Good map, good variation, I like it. Rating 8

1867 Georgia Reconstruction: same blind bidding for turn order. I like it. This one is tougher than South Carolina. Only actions available are urbanization and city growth (with Steam rules). In my game my opponent got locked out, we broke off, result was clear. I would like to play this again.

OK LAND RUSH: This map takes the long-term strategy of the basic game and gives it a tactical element by the way that the goods are all known and pre-determined on the map. That means that the first person to get to a certain point of the map will get first dibs on the good that's in that space, but the surfeit of goods, paired with the networks still being lucrative and important, give the map a nice tension. I'm not sure that this is a favorite, but it's certainly worth playing time and again.

Played Basic game w 4 persons on the Oklahoma Land Crawl (aka Rush) map. We all started in the West and didn't urbanise until quite late in the game. We were reluctant to spend 6 to urbanise and find that others then jumped in on the new city.

This made it a very tight and hard game, not too different from the ruthless and cutthroat variant I expect. We had expected a fairly quick game with a "rush" but instead it was slow and a bit fiddly with all of the cubes.

Interesting map but overall I prefer the more regular maps with cubes on cities.

The two-player maps need very careful planning if you want to make any profit at all. The art looks much more like Age of Steam than Steam. The maps look simple but invlolve surprising strategic depth. I'm not sure I like the direction they take Steam gameplay, though.

Played both Georgia and SC 2p maps. While totally functional implementations of the system for two players, they just are not good enough to choose this game over other two-player games.

Georgia Reconstruction. I preferred South Carolina to this one, mainly because I preferred the auction intensity of the builds on a preordained (and ultra tight) map versus the auctions driven off of the asymmetric value of getting a new town on the map.

South Carolina. As noted above, this was my preferred two-player in this set of maps. In both, I found the cube auction to work moderately well. In the end, there are much better games to play when you only have two people...

Georgia Reconstruction (w/ Age of Steam rules)
The changes:
- 2-player only
- no yellow/purple cities/cubes; players each start with yellow or purple cubes
- each turn _starts_ with auction for turn order; use cubes to bid; all bid cubes lost; if tie, bid again; must bid at least 1 till you run out; if both out, determine randomly
- only special action = urbanization; only available to first player; only 4 towns on board
- there's prebuilt incomplete track on the board; take control of it if you extend the track. Also, 2 complete links; take control if you urbanize one of the towns on the end.
- when delivering cubes, add them to your collection (to use for bidding)

Using the cubes to bid worked _really_ well! The map is small so you're interacting with each other right away. The game plays pretty quickly, and it is _tough_: better not lose too many early auctions (need to urb to get deliveries)! I do miss the loco action, but I guess you just have to work around that.

This is a terrific little map! 9/10

------
SOUTH CAROLINA
1 play, AoS rules (2er only)

This is one of Ted's maps that fiddles with the turn order auction: you start with all 20 cubes of a color, adding any cubes you deliver to that pool. You bid with cubes, not cash (all bids spent). Other changes:
- bid for turn order first, THEN issue shares
- players place New Cities A-D on the board at the start (divide randomly, place in alphabetical order)
- only action = Engineer (to first player)
- must pay $1 cash per delivery
- roll 4d6 for production; ALL cubes go to Charleston!
- 8-turn game

This is a solid map. I don't generally like blind bidding but it seems to work well here (and in his other maps using this mechanism). Charleston is crucial, and it would seem that both players need to build there right from the start, or maybe on turn 2? Early builds may, however, be disproportionately important if you can manage to make Charleston less accessible to the other player? Initial city placement also requires some long-range planning based on the goods distribution in the Display and your planned builds -- and I'm not so good at that, generally preferring more tactical play.

It's hard to judge the map after just one play, but I think this will be a keeper though not necessarily a star.

7/10?
