I'm biased. I play tested it but the new boards are rather good. Be a masochist - go Irish

An excellent expansion that features 2 very different maps:
- England is similar to the standard map, with a minor change of pace (London the only red and distances are somewhat further.)
- Ireland converts AoS to a great 3 player game. With no Urbanization and Locomotive the game takes careful analysis of wwhether or when to upgrade trains. Very tight, but highly appropriate for this game.

Highly recommended.

England: Interesting changes from the base game - only 1 real rule change, so easy to get into playing on the map. Rating up to 10 after 2 plays - excellent with 5-6.
Ireland: wow, this is pure evil in its best sense! Fantastic map made all the more brutal by the deurbanization option. 10.

One 3p game on the Ireland map. Very tight.

One 5p game on the England map. It was pretty loose. I played very poorly, so didn't build as much as normal. I barely avoided bankruptcy and felt triumphant making it to the end of the game. Scored -24.

England: There is nothing overwhelmingly special about England other than it plays six really well - which makes it undeniably special. I'm not sure that I love the map as much as some of the others, but it serves such a specialized purpose that I'm very appreciative of the design. Indispensable as an AoS fanatic.

Ireland: Holy Crap, if you think that the standard rust belt map is vicious, this one is brutal. There is such an amazing sense of joy that you get when you actually get into the black in this one. I jumped up and down when I earned my first 4 dollars!

As good as the original. On the edge of my seat for the whole game. The fact that london is the only red town creates possibilities for new strategies, like controlling London and having opponents pay for use of our links.

IMO, Ireland is the best map for AoS. The one I own is a copy.

The best of the official Age of Steam expansions - good maps for the whole range of players. This is almost mandatory if you expect to play with three regularly.

Plays:
England x9.
Ireland x4.
Ireland is a very small and crowded map. And much more nasty when goods can be removed. The auctions are totally different since the roles are weaker (locomotive and de-urbanisation).
England was surprisingly difficult. A lot of empty space around London, which totally killed my 1st game. Have to be more aggresive on this map. Urbanization is a must, or play closer to the other players and take advantage of their urbanisation. I was alone in my corner and did not Urbanize. Last game on England map we had 2 persons go bankrupt!...

England:

An early expansion effort, and one with a design flaw that is repeated in later fan-generated maps: Cities are spaced too far apart, and so engineering is a particularly important special action. Still, a new map is a new map. All is well, though not perfect.

Ireland:

The better of the two expansion maps, and the one that makes this set worth owning. The new urbanization (removing cubes from a city) is just plain mean. And fun.

Though it does seem marginally unfair that the same player can build both Wales connections on the same turn, if so inclined.

Ireland is a hard map. It's a struggle just to survive. Anytime the game is that strong of an opponent, the expansion is worthwhile.

I've only played So. England so far but will try Ireland soon. I love the tight interaction on the So. England board that you get with six players. The 1st timers in the game had trouble staying afloat though, even more so than when we played the original, this is probably due to the tighter config.

13.8.2008: I like this map, it's good. A bit tougher than the base map, but doesn't add many new rules. That's nice. Works well with five players. Rating: 10
