Played once as 3P: The shipment queue made for interesting timing decisions (e.g. "If I ship this cube now, it opens it up for Bruce to ship the next cube, which I want").

Seems like a map that would work as a teaching map too. The building costs are greatly simplified: every tile lay costs $3.

1 play, 4er.

Interesting, although it changes the game too much in a way I don't think I'll enjoy as much as other expansions.
- With the constant goods growth, there will never be a cube shortage -- as long as you can deliver what's at the head of the line of cubes. That does make the Production action more powerful than the base game, though.
- The board is so small that despite the building constraints (only 2/turn) you pretty much run out of places to build _well_ before the end of the game. You also end up building very intermeshed with everyone else; you don't really have your "own" tracks like you do on most maps.

I suspect I'd enjoy the map more with 3, and not at all with 5 or 6 (isn't this just for 3 or 4?).

--- Summary ---
- No Urb
- Setup: randomly assign cities' colors (mix 3 blue, 3 red, 2 each other cubes; draw 1/city randomly). Then randomly place 4 cubes onto each city, in a row L to R
- Track building: all track is $3; may only build 2 track (except Engineer: 3 tiles)
- Move goods: only rightmost cube in each city is available (after moving a cube, shift everything rightward)
- Goods Growth: Refill all empty cube-spaces in cities randomly unless Production picked; in that case, that player draws/places cubes one by one

(Colour, American edition)

1890 Berlin has two major twists, the colours of the cities are randomized at the start of the game (from a set mix to insure there are some of each colour) and the cities always start the round with 4 cubes on them, but only the one furthest right in the line can be delivered.

The map was originally included as an insert in Fairplay, so it's a smaller, half-size map that restricts the amount of track you're able to build. There are no towns, but the normal number of cities. As is common in maps that restrict track building, track sharing is much more common in the early game than might be expected. The tight map also encourages this.

In practice, I quite like this map for about the first 2/3 of the game, but in the back half I don't care for the state of affairs where players can't build track (literally, no open edges left) and hence, just ship for a couple of rounds. I understand this is a function of the map's size, and the size is because it was originally an insert, but I still find it problematic, as this blemishes an otherwise interesting and fun design.

I would probably not like to play this with more than 4 due to the player-generated chaos in the goods shipment phases as well. Seems good with 3, but I would prefer the Irish Loco to the standard one if I played this with 3 again, as the auction deflates because of the high value of Engineer throughout the early game.

1890 Berlin offers some intriguing twists to Age of Steam. The early game is a fight over real estate with Engineer being popular, while the mid-to-late game is more about controlling cube shipments with First Move and Production being popular.

The cities are always replenished to 4 cubes during goods growth (there's no shortage of cubes here) but you can only ship cubes out of a city in order, from right to left. You have to watch how cubes move - do you ship that cube for 4, leaving a 6-link delivery open for an opponent?

We played this map with three players. In the beginning engineer and first build were the hot actions, later on, as the board was filling up, production and locomotive became more popular.

I think it is best with 3/4 for it's a rather small map. Ten turns felt like one too many, the board was already full with track and we had net incomes of 15+.

Another interesting map for AoS
