I was sceptical at first about Dominion: Alchemy at first, but it turns out to be an excellent addition to the Dominion family. Most of the cards are interesting, some are spectacular. However, Potions are annoying when they turn up in your hand with not enough coins or too many coins for the available alchemy cards; that is the downside of being able to buy Familiars, Golems, and Possessions. The only problem I have with Alchemy is the price: I paid EUR 30 for an imported box, which is the same price I paid for the other boxes with twice the number of cards. Of course, that I bought it means I think it's worth it...

Really like this. I was cautious at first, but the potion mechanic really doesn't hurt the game.

brings up some nice questions. Should I forgo the quick fix of a 4 coin card for the potion. Sometimes this is risky sometimes this is needed.

These cards are quite interesting. High in interaction and some are downright evil. I love it!

My opinion of this has risen significantly since I started playing with only 1 or 2 of the cards at a time. It's a goofy set, but in small doses it can be fun goofiness.

It may be relevant that I've played this expansion almost exclusively online - some cards, most of all Philosopher's Stone, would be a pain in the butt in the physical world, slowing things down excessively.

Winners: Apothecary, Apprentice, Golem

Stinkers: None! I even enjoy Possession, not least for the angst it causes other people. I think it's useful to compare it to Outpost - no controversy with that card, and P-son costs a lot more.

It took a while for this to grow on me, but now I rate it about the same as all the other sets. I was lukewarm about it until after it came out (imagine how unhappy I was during playtesting). I think my bias came from playing an early game where Thief stole my first Potion and really hosed my game.

Though this set is oft-maligned, I'm a big fan of the Philosopher's Stone card.

"Ohhhhh, a new Dominion-expansion. Must have it, I'm a sucker for Dominion. Hold up - what's that price tag? No, no, I want that little one right there. The one with the box that says Der Alchemist on the cover. Ah, really? I see, you already got that. Well, like I said I'm a sucker for Dominion. Not a sucker."

Seriously, this is ridiculously overpriced. Maybe this expansion is good, but with this pricing I likely won't play it. And that's bad, thus the rating.

------
After all I'm just a sucker. Bought it with the stash expansion at a more reasonable price. How could I miss out on further variety and variants for one of my most favorite games? Well, I just couldn't.

I have to admit, I'm a sucker. After having played it with the expansion I must admit, it seamlessly fits into the series and makes it even more interesting. Only issue I could think of is that the philosopher's stone and some other card combinations have potential for some drag, but I just don't care. I always want to play it. Just like all the other Dominion stuff. It is a one-of-a-kind game.

Good expansion with a new treasure, Potion. Golem ties in well with Goons of the Prosperity expansion. I buy as many coppers as I need to naximzse the victory points provided by Goons on each purchase. Just completed a game where I had 87 points, 50 of which were due to Goons victory points. In one hand, I had 3 Goons in play (thanks to Golem finding them in my 80-card deck) and 6 buys, for a cool 18 victory point gain.

Great expansion. I'd probably rate this higher if it had been a larger expansion; perhaps combined with Cornucopia's cards.

Alchemy gets a bad rap from the Potion cost cards. I suspect this is because some folks don't manage the needs of a dual currency well; probably people who haven't played "enough" Magic multicolored decks. I think the three to five cards not-a-rule-but-a-suggestion in the rule book has also unfortunately contributed to this. Three to five is a good number for getting the "feel" of an expansion out of a set of kingdom cards in a supply with multiple expansions but it isn't necessary to effectively use the Alchemy cards.

Great cards in this expansion, and you are missing out on a lot of fun by not learning to use them.

What can I say? I love everything Dominion so more cards is just gravy.

Personally, I don't see why Alchemy gets so much less love than the other Dominion sets. Adding another angle to the game just increases the variety it has to offer which is the strength of Dominion.

I like Dominion even more than pizza and beer. Each new set brings so many clever ideas to the table. Then you can mix all the sets. Wow. What a fantastic game concept!

Not as good as the base game, or Intrigue, but still worth a 10. Base game deserves an 11, and Intrigue a 12. Still worthy of the name Dominion.

I do not share the general dislike for this expansion - in fact, I think it is perhaps the most intriguing of all the expansions, and perhaps has the greatest proportion of game-changing cards. Although, I do dislike (and never use) the suggested rule of always including 3-5 Alchemy cards whenever you have one - to me, the Alchemy cards are so powerful and lead to such long action chains that any game with 4 or 5 alchemy cards will lead to most players' turns taking 2 or 3 minutes each! Just 1 or 2 Alchemy cards often gives a difficult decision of whether they are worth going for at all (given that most need you to spend time buying a potion first).

All in all, Alchemy is another outstanding set, like all the Dominion expansions - and certainly the most unique one.
