Simply one of the best, grand-strategy/"political" games out there. Makes a great lead-in to WiF. Game play is fast, easy to learn-even non-wargamers can pick this up quickly, and great player interaction.

Essentially, an updated DoD 2nd edition designed for WiF: The Final Edition, instead of WiF 5th edition. Rule changes and errata included. Great system for what-ifs, something I happily endorse! So appreciative that they've updated this for WiFFE!

Where to start in commenting this monster? I'm talking about the game as it stands here, not as an accessory for WiF, which I did not try. I should add I've been intrigued for a while by the notion of realising a rendition of WW2 where certain aspects were streamlined. Calling this "streamlined" is a bit of a stretch, granted, but some of the spirit of this game goes towards that direction.

Although the essence of the rules is possibly not that terrible to remember, gameplay is so open-ended that I would not even dream to introduce somebody to the game by teaching it to them (29 options for each MP, 35 for Germany, several of which unique to the MPs...). At the same time, the combat system of the game, based on blind bidding of army points, does not lend itself to soloing (though I managed to make it work reasonably, with a little help from the dice).

Mechanics-wise, this game convinced me Harry Rowland is one of the greatest game-designers of all times. The ability with which he comes up with original abstract ideas, often quite ahead of their time, makes them work at the service of theme, and embeds them seamlessly within gargantuan game architectures is just uncanny. In this case, the struggle for control of the minor countries on the status display is just sheer genius, and is perfectly integrated in the game.

Unfortunately, this one is certainly the weakest among the Australian Design Group's I tried (7 Ages and WiF being the others) in terms of development and production. The rules are poor, seems incomplete or at least very difficult difficult to refer to (how does one handle the two Chinese powers, exactly? What are the Spanish civil war tokens for? In the tables, where are the special stats for Nationalist Spain, referred to in the rules?). They are also certainly hindered by the requirement of compatibility with the WiF system. The number of army and navy chits is grossly insufficient (probably the most annoying of the issues: One even struggles to set up the CW forces...). The major power cards are, at least in my copy, from DoDII, and hence wrong!

All the same, this a majestic experience, conveys the flavour of momentous diplomacy and grand strategy, and is certainly very much up my alley, and I'm hence very glad to own it.

Days of Decision III starts in 1936, with the pre-war maneuvering for power and political advantage. It can be played as a stand-alone game, or you can use it with the World in Flames maps and units to explore sometimes dramatically different beginnings of World War II. At the extreme, the Soviet Union and Communist Chinese could end up allying with the Axis.

This plays well as a stand-alone, I think. I played it once with WIFFE and enjoyed it although, as the German, I got outmaneuvered and was rudely surprised to face the perfidious Swedes as enemies.

Using DODIII with a WIF game will slow things down a bit, but it is a lot of fun if you like to explore what-if scenarios.

Oh -- and I must admit I'm surprised this isn't called "Decisions in Flames" or "Diplomats Aflame" or something like that!

Pretty solid game depicting the political conflict of World War II. Decent mechanics on its own, although a little slow to start (A little meaning REALLY slow to start).

Will eventually be playing combined with World in Flames, I'm sure I'll have more to say then.

I have played this game with WiF, and it offers some interesting options. But the WiF system is a mess, and this detracts some from the experience.

A very "a good game if you like it" (as in "my mother loves aubergines, I hate them").

My experience with a 1936 start comes from Hearts of Iron 3 (the computer game) plus all the expansions and the latest patch - i.e.: the finished game (I know, I know, this is not VideoGameGeek, but let me run with this ball for a while).

HoI 3's 1936 start is, basically, an early start version of the 1939 scenario. You have political manoeuvring, tech research and - the part I like more - the possibility to focus your research/units build toward a very specific "war strategy". Like when I decided to make the Mediterranean an Italian lake, by researching Marines and other "seapower" technologies. In the same game I also managed to accidentally start the War in late 1937 (don't ask) much to everybody's else chagrin.

Sorry for the long detour, but I feel it is important. What I'm looking for is a "1936 start" scenario for World in Flames itself, maybe joined with a "lite" version of DoD. And the opportunity for dire things to happen (like my 1937 accidental start which caught *every* MP flatfooted - Germany and Japan included). DoD III is not a bad game. Actually it is a good game. But it will not give you this. My feeling is that "The Road to War in Flames 1936-1939" (with a clear and present possibility of having the war start before 1939) is the supplement that WiF truly lacks, and that ADG should have thought about that before creating and publishing fantasy scenarios like "America in Flames" or "Patton in Flames".

Dry convoluted vestige of 80's style wargames. Roll dice lookup chart which tells you to roll more dice and lookup more charts. Really shocked people still design games like this in 21st century...
