Similar to the occupation cards in Agricola, your leader draft combined with the actual wonder makes for mush more planning ahead and replay-ability.

The group trends to prefer Cities to Leaders by some margin but personally, I really like this one.

Rated 10 because it's a must have expansion and adds variety to the base game.

Love the historic flavour of the leaders, that adds a extra layer of strategy to an already fantastic game.

I want to like Leaders but the basic design premise of it is flawed. Drafting is about looking for opportunity and capitalizing on it. A good draft strategy is one that responds to what the players around you are doing.

Leaders flies in the face of a drafting game by encouraging you to commit to specific strategies at the beginning of the game. If you draft Leaders that synergize with science cards and the player to your left goes for science, you are hosed. This can happen arbitrarily because that player may not be aware of the choices you have made as they begin their draft. They may even have selected Leaders that reward similar categories without knowing they did so.

A compelling argument has been made that in most cases the best use of a Leader is to discard it for $3. If that is the case, one wonders why they should be used at all.

This expansion looks cool, but don't be drawn in by the glamor of a new card color and a bunch of new cards to explore. Think about whether this will make your drafting experience better or worse. Play at your own risk.

I like the extra choices the Leaders expansion brings to the game. I'm one of the few who actually thought the game was too short, so I like the longer play time. I'd like to see even more Leaders added in future expansions.

One thing I've noticed since adding Leaders is that player scores were often much closer with just the base game. Leaders seems to make the winner take a much bigger lead.

One other thing worth noting- the iconography on the Leaders isn't as clear as the base cards. Players may take extra time looking up each card before the game starts.

Not Devoid of Fun, but Quite Possibly Makes the Game WORSE!

Eh, the Leaders make for some satisfying fun combos that net you some cool bonuses if you're playing this multiplayer-solitaire style. But they subtly detract from what little interaction and strategy there is when you're playing 3 player attentive drafting.

The fact that they're mostly hidden, swingy, and foxy players will save their biggest bonus leader for the end makes your valuation of other players strategies and counter-drafting more difficult.

Not that I really care. I'll play with this, because I'm sorta apathetic about 7 Wonders to begin with, and when I get lucky and my Leaders happen to line up with great synergy it is fun to double someones score. And I do like the planning it adds, with having to make sure you have the money to pay for your leader at the end of each age.

Haven't had much opportunity to use this expansion yet as keep playing the game with new players. Can see that it will add variety to each game in which strategy you might want to follow. It does add a bit to the game length though.

Great expansion. Rome(B) is a GREAT wonder and the new guild cards are very nice too, adding some cool variety. Leaders add some flavor and they help you defining the strategy, but this comes with some risks also: You have to be careful not to force yourself into the strategy that your leaders suggest at any cost. Most of the times that leads to loss. The other con is that this expansion introduce another element of luck. If you don't find good leaders and your opponents do, you start the game with a substantial disadvantage.

Nevertheless this is a "must have" expansion for the basic game.

Personally, I find Leaders just adds unnecessary randomness to an already smooth game. Cities is the better expansion, I'd argue.

Simply and elegantly adds customization options for the player who's been around the block a few times, and now needs variety and a bit more deliberate strategy in an experienced crowd.
