Good but not great expansion. I find that leaders are equally used and ignored.

EXPANSION

Thoughts? -
A must have and must play expansion with every game. Random leaders can overpower a strong board if they synergise, but it's a necessary addition. Plays well with 2-7 players. The game scales and gives a good game with any number.

Still Play Regularly? - Necessary expansion for every game.

It was fine I suppose. I think it'd add diversity to the base game if you have overplayed base 7W, but it doesn't do anything all that striking/new. Its basically an 8th card you get every age, which doesn't really significantly change the feel or anything of the game. I also like how short 7W is, and making it longer makes it not as attractive.

I think the base game is fine without this, and I think this was a mediocre expansion or thereabouts.

Plays: 1 or 2

The addition of the leaders to the original game gives each player a focus. Certain leaders assist certain strategies and the drafting of the leaders before the first round gives the players a chance to look for extra synergy.
Definitely improves on the original game. However, be sure to get a few plays of the base game under your belt before adding this!

New coins, new guilds, a new Wonder, and most importantly, the Leaders themselves, which you acquire through a new recruitment phase, that lend you new abilities and opportunities for scoring. Not a huge expansion, but one substantial enough to influence your strategy, which is not for the worse in this game.

I don't recommend this expansion. It costs the same as Cities, but is so much worse. White "leader" cards are picked in a 4 card mini age prior to Age I. Then, before each age, you have the option to play 1 leader card, paying for it with gold. This can break the game. Leaders do a wide range of things from improving science, helping you with trade, strengthening your military, or just giving you points. This breaks the game for 2 reasons. First, leaders are randomly drawn and the 4 you end up with before Age I are the 4 you get. You may end up with crap leaders while an opponent ends up with a very powerful leader that plays directly into the strength of their Wonder. This leads to the second reason, if you want to get the most out of your leaders, you may have to stick to a single strategy. If your leader gives you +1 point for each science card, you need to go science to get the full benefit. If it exempts you from battle, then you can't get military. It kills your ability to react and change strategies mid game at the risk of making your leader useless. In addition, the 1 new Wonder card the expansion comes with has everything to do with leaders and can't be used in a normal game without the expansion.

Don't get this, get Cities instead.

Expands the base game nicely!

Every player now has a stock of 4 leaders after the new first Leader Phase of the game. Each of them has effects roughly similar to those of buildings (although there are lots of new effects). You can recruit (=build) one leader at the start of every age (in a new phase called Recruitment Phase) and nobody can take that from you. That means other than in the base game, you have some cards (other than the wonder stages) of which you can be certain that you can build/recruit them later (at least as long as you ensure that you have the necessary coins to recruit your leaders at the start of every age).
This adds some possibility for long term strategic planning, which I like!

*Maybe* the leaders increase the luck factor a little because it is mostly luck based and quite important if you manage to get leaders with synergy effects. However, disregarding some unlikely 3 leader power combos, the level of luck involved here seems roughly similar to the luck already present in the base game. Some luck with 2 leaders that match well can easily be offset by bad luck of the draw later, so it doesn't seem that big of a deal.

I was teetering on the edge of hating 7 Wonders before this but this really made it worse. It adds a bunch of cards that are unbalanced and force players to plan ahead in a game that is primarily tactical. If you take a leader that rewards strategy A but don't get the cards you need than it was a total waste. The game was frustrating before and this really ruined it.

+ Stevie and Wil.

Great expansion. Rome(B) is a GREAT wonder and the new guild cards are very nice too, adding some cool variety. Leaders add some flavor and they help you defining the strategy, but this comes with some risks too: You have to be careful not to force yourself into the strategy that your leaders suggest at any cost. Most of the times that leads to loss. The other con is that this expansion introduce another element of luck. If you don't find good leaders and your opponents do, you start the game with a substantial disadvantage.

Nevertheless this is a "must have" expansion for the base game.

(Same as base game)
So, I'm not such a big fan of leaders. I don't think it really hurts the game, but it doesn't add a whole lot either.

Games with leaders tend to be more swingy, higher-scoring affairs. It seems like 3 extra card plays wouldn't make much difference, but they really do, and can be cornerstones of your strategy. For those who liked the tighter, faster-playing experience of the original game, this may not seem an improvement.

The central problem in Leaders is that you only see 4 cards, then 3, 2, and a last card that you get no choice in. It's a much smaller draft than the regular ones during the round, and you pretty much never see any cards back from it. This leads to higher variance, since you have much less choice, plus every card is unique.
As I alluded to earlier, they can also be a lot more powerful than most normal age cards. You can put out a leader (there are at least 2) that negates your need for military entirely, for the whole game. You can put out leaders that make building certain colors a snap, or drastically improve your science scoring, or let you buy any resource you need, etc. There are also leaders, though, who just give you some cash, or make your subsequent leaders free, or give you bonus military based on how many defeats you've suffered, or 2 points, and so on. In other words, there's a great disparity between the best and the worst. Some are bonkers powerful if you're playing a particular way, but useless to everyone else. Some are great for just about anyone.
So, to sum up, the initial draft gives you less control than the rest of the game, and has way more of an impact. It's nice that this first round gives you a boost down a particular path, but I don't feel like it's going to result in balanced play.
That, and the fact that you only get a single wonder that relies on the leader rules to work, means I can safely skip this expansion. Don't hate it, just don't see plopping down the cash for it myself.

A solid expansion. Leaders adds a way to specifically focus your strategy based on the three leaders you draft. A good addition to the game that is worth the slightly longer set up required. My only hang up is that not all leaders are created equal. Some are clearly better for the cost than others IMO.
