A "for variety" expansion, hence same rating as base game. A nice change of pace - minimal locations, easy to quest, but get prepared to do huge defense and huge attacks, because massively big trolls are going to hit you all at once (unless you can get your threat down and take them 1 at a time). Good groan factor in this one. The new hero cards aren't that exciting.

Hero: I wasn't a big fan of Frodo until recently. When pairing him him Loragorn, you can dump a lot of damage into threat.
Player cards: A Burning Brand is still a very powerful card. Especially useful in the depths of Moria. Dunedain Warning can also be handy!
Quest/Encounter deck: The quest is where this pack truly shines. It makes thematic sense to me to prepare your heroes when you expect a big brawl with a bunch of trolls. TGG+DT+WotW made this quest to easy, but the new scoring system (1.2) not only takes care of that but also makes the descision when to engage even more interesting.

Conflict at the Carrock is a great adventure pack. Frodo is a powerful hero, Rohan gets a few more cards, Song of Wisdom opens up the Lore sphere, and Burning Brand (cancel all shadow cards) is one of the best Lore cards in the game. These cards, combined with a great quest, make Conflict one of my top 5 recommended adventure packs.

Quest (Mirkwood 2/6, DL = 7): This is a difficult quest, especially if Grimbeorn does not appear (though not nearly as difficult as Dol Guldur which is also rated 7). I like the quest a lot because it's an epic troll showdown. I do, however, wish that Grimbeorn appeared more regularly, such as from the quest cards instead of the encounter cards. As is, some games he will not join your side and that makes the quest even more difficult. Strategy tip: keep your threat below 34 to avoid becoming dinner for the trolls.

Very tough challenge. I understand the need to "turtle and then ambush" the trolls by slowing down on progressing to the next quest stage, but managing threat is the real challenge here. Hard not to over/under quest. The treachery card that raises players' threat by what's in the staging area requires you to have a creature on the table at all times so you can discard to cancel.

I like this adventure, just wish we could knock it out. Three weeks in a row of attempting 2-3 times per night and we've only beaten it once.

A tough nut to crack, it definitely requires some leadership so you can benefit from the ally that might appear at some point. I recommend combining Lore with Leadership and adding a few songs to get you as much Leadership and Lore resources.

Managed to beat this one with two players with a Lore/Leadership and Spirit/Leadership deck. When is Tactics going to be a required sphere?

One of my favorite quests. I love the trolls in it. Can be mean, but that's how trolls are supposed to be. I already loved the game, but this one just put me there in middle earth. And I'm not usually one that just gets into fantasy that's not true Tolkien. The game designers and artists really have accomplished something in this game.

Adventure Difficulty Level: 7

Conflict at the Carrock Adventure Encounter Decks:
The Conflict at the Carrock (30 cards)
Journey Down the Anduin (9 cards)
Wilderlands (14 cards)

New Hero: Frodo Baggins (Spirit)

New Lore cards:
Longbeard Mapmaker
A Burning Brand

New Spirit Cards:
Eomund
Nor Am I A Stranger

New Leadership Cards:
Dunedain Warning
Second Breakfast

New Tactics Cards:
Beorning Beekeeper
Born Aloft

New Neutral Card:
Song of Wisdom

This encounter contains 38% Location cards and only 25% Treachery cards. But 36% of the encounter cards are enemies and they are among the nastiest of enemies in the game so far - the Trolls. Four of the troll cards are unique and all enter the game after the first quest card is finished.

This is another completely different adventure for your Lord of the Rings LCG playing pleasure. I think I like this one more than the Hunt for Gollum adventure. The 6 trolls in the deck really add some serious power to the enemies you will encounter and the players will have to step carefully when dealing with them. But the trolls themselves aren't all you have to worry about. The addition of the "Sacked" and "Roasted Slowly" cards adds a huge amount of tension. This is a fun adventure.

A warning to new players of this adventure. One of the Treachery cards, A Frightened Beast, can be extremely deadly and may result in rather short games if you are not prepared. This card has a When Revealed function that states "Each player raises his threat by the total threat of all the cards in the staging area. Any player may choose to discard from play 1 Creature ally card he controls to cancel this effect." So you need cards which can cancel When Revealed effects or you need creature allies. Unfortunately, there are currently only 3 creature allies in existence in any of the spheres, they are the Eagles in the Tactics deck.

The encounter deck
The encounter deck is created through the combination of the following three decks: Conflict at the Carrock, Journey down the Anduin, and Wilderlands. If Journey down the Anduin is quite a tranquil deck - as said, the most problematic card is Gladden Fields - the Wilderlands is a tricky one, especially in this Scenario. As players will remember from Quest 02, Wilderlands come with some nasty locations (The East Bight, threat 5, and The Brown Lands, threat 1, but 6 progress marker needed to pass, and a compulsory choice when given the option for travel, so that if by chance you have both cards in the staging area, you'll have a +5 threat due to The East Blight until you pass The Brown Lands, hence, until you lose the game unless you have Northern Tracker in the deck) and some tedious enemies, like Wargs or Goblin Snipers (threat 48, you cannot optionally engage it unless he's the only enemy in the staging area; if in the staging area at the end of the round, deal 1 damage to any character controlled by each player), but most of all the Wilderlands deck is notorious for hosting two Hill Trolls (attack 6, defense 3, life 9, and the horrible ability to convert excess damage into threat increase so that chump blocking it's not the recommended choice against these dudes.

Good. Now, consider that Conflict at the Carrock comes with a new location, The Carrock, that starts the game in the staging area and:
a) boosts all the trolls in the deck (not only the two Hill Trolls, but also the new trolls coming in this deck), giving them +1 attack, +1 defense, and
b) is immune to player card effects. This means you cannot use Northern Tracker when it's in the staging area, you cannot use Lorien Guide when it's the active location, you cannot add progress marker to it due to Legolas or Blade of Gondolin, you cannot swap it back into the staging area, nothing.

Clearly, the problem is not only the new location. The deck comes with four unique trolls, Stuart (while engaged, all Trolls gain +1 defense), Morris (while engaged, all Trolls gain +1 attack), Rupert (makes some nasty cards re-enter the deck) and Louis (after attacking, raise defending player's threat by +3). Their unmodified stats are 4 attack, 2 defense, 10 life. This means that if by chance you have all of them in play at the same time, considering they enhance each other, with the Carrock in play, the guys have 6 attack and 4 defense, which are somehow *heavy*. If you add the two Hill Trolls in the mix... you see how it's finally time to test your decks!

Still, the encounter deck is not dangerous only for these cards. There are other problematic cards that can be triggered. First of all, in the game there are 2+N (where N is the number of players) Sacked! cards: in perfect consistency with the books, the Trolls try to sack the heroes and then to have them Roasted slowly. The first card basically transforms one of your heroes in one senseless heap of hopelessness: a sacked hero cannot attack, defend, commit to a quest, trigger its effect, or collect resources. You can get rid of Sacked by killing one of the named Trolls, but you cannot cancel it (it enters play as a "when revealed effect", hence, no exhausting Eleanor or whatsoever). Then, if Roasted slowly enters play, all Sacked heroes are killed. Which is absolutely a lethal combo.

Finally, in the new encounter deck, there are some interesting locations, with River Langflood being the most problematic: as long as it's in the staging area, it gains +1 threat for each Troll enemy in play. Clearly, having two of them with all trolls in play means each of them is worth 8 threat, for a total of 16 and the risk of game over. Another location, Bee Pastures, allows Gimbeorn the Old to be added to the staging area. Grimbeorn is an objective that players can acquire by spending 8 Leadership resources. This does not necessarily mean that you need Leadership heroes to win him, since the Oak-wood Grove location allows you to spend resources as if they were leadership, as long as it's the active location. Still, winning Grimbeorn to your side is something that could be difficult to achieve (honestly, in 15 games played so far, it never happened once).

The quest
The quest is structured over two stages. Passing them it's a little tricky, as we're about to see:

- Stage 01 of the quest theoretically represents the "search for Grimbeorn the Old". Thematically, the Heroes come closer to the Carrock, investigating what's going on, and searching for allies. At this moment of the quest, the Carrock is in the staging area and the four named Trolls are out of play

- Stage 02 of the quest requires only 1 progress marker to be passed, with the condition that all enemy Trolls in play are defeated. When this stage is triggered, the Carrock becomes the active location, and the four named Trolls enter the staging area

At this point it's clear how there are only two possible strategies to beat this quest, and neither of them is easy to achieve:

a) you try to steal the quest: you move very quickly through stage one, possibly thanks to a "heavy" quester, with a lot of Willpower, so that you pass it in the first two turns. You try to keep your threat low (sneak attacking Gandalf, or using threat reduction from cards) and you lure the trolls out of the staging area, one at the time, killing each of them while he cannot tag-team with his friends (or use Forest Snare to incapacitate them one at the time). In this way you can get rid of the guy boosting defense first, then of the guy boosting the attack, then of the guy reshuffling the sacked cards and finally of the guy raising your threat upon attacking

b) you try to slow down at max the pace during stage 01, so that you can actually field quite a number of allies that will help you contain the troll horde for when they'll enter play all together

Also, having some direct damage cards will help greatly. In any case, the quest is difficult, and if you're playing with the idea of "one deck to rule them all", you'll possibly have to face some difficulties over here.

This scenario poses a different approach. It seems easy at the beginning but then you are hit by four big trolls if your threat level is 34 or higher.
So the best strategy seems to be to duck under that level and build up a massive force to deal with the Trolls sequentially.
I built a Frodo/Beravor/Theodred deck with "For Gondor" as a crucial card.
In another approach I made good use of Gimli's special ability and engaged the Trolls in a more "manly" fashion. Gimli with Plate and Axe is able to deal massive damage in one blow.

Travelling through the mirkwood "campaign". Wow, this one is challenging, got busted when I came to the carrock and the trolls came out with a threat of 44. All 3 Gandalfs where in the bottom 10 cards of my deck (along with my sneak attacks hehe). Was fun and exciting. Will keep on grining till I make it
Won my second attempt after building a more combat focused tactics/lore/spirit hero deck with lots of threat reduction. Nice one. Now on to the next part of the story
