Online Empire Builder where you build and defend your own infrastructure while attacking regions of the world to conquer the whole globe. At the same time there is a matching function for players to attack each other. Either way, wins gain you resources while losses can cost you resources. The game runs smoothly on my iPad2 and is actually quite engaging - at first...

Infrastructure upgrades cost increasing amounts and types of resources, so to build to the higher levels much must be accumulated which gets increasingly difficult as you are being attacked constantly. It can get quite frustrating as you try to accumulate enough to make an important upgrade as you log-in to find half of what you built up has been lost to several player attacks. The matching function tracks the level to which you have built up your defenses and so upgrading your troops and defensive weapons just means that tougher opponents are given your site. I suppose if you upgraded everything to the highest levels available, you might finally start to win some defensive engagements but it would be enormously difficult to achieve

One way (and as I'm beginning to think, the only way) to get around this is to instantly buy (with real money) the resources you need and carry on before you get attacked again. So, yet another "free game" with in-game purchasing options. I'm playing a couple of these right now (Jurassic Park Builder being the other), and they all are cleverly designed to try and force you to cough up money after you've established yourself and become invested in the game.

I steadfastly refuse to spend a nickel on any of these things and will play on a bit more to see if patience and persistence can overcome the hurdles they deliberately set before you. At some point though, and before that nickel get spent, I will likely nuc them all...
