To quote my own review: What we really have here is a brilliant civilization building game with many of the core hallmarks of more complicated 4X games, wrapped in an attractive package absolutely soaking in well researched theme, plays in about 90-120 minutes, and plays equally well with 2, 3, or 4 players.

The expansion cards add a nice fun factor to that game that acts both to enhance the overall experience and also give a small boost to the person who's furthest behind on the VP track.

First played this at BGG.Con 2009.

This game is worth flying to Dallas for (all hail BGG.Con!)

One of my top ten games. Brilliant interconnected mechanics. A classic that's stood the test of time.

It had not occurred to me until I read this review, but this game is actually good for up to 8 players at the same time.

This game might well be summed up as "what Chess would be like is someone designed it today".

Maria is deeper than Friedrich, but I find Friedrich more fun to play. Either way, you can't go wrong. And if you only have 3 players, this is the ideal choice.

Has much of the same you-are-there tension as Twilight Struggle, has a very nice take on event cards, and the addition of "alternate history" cards that have highly possible events adds to the verisimilitude of the game.
