Vinci and Advanced Civilization had a child, and it was 7! Its got some fiddle, it has a little chaos, and it takes like an entire weekend to play, but OMG. There is very little downtime as you can affect others on their turn. If only there was time...

Great gateway game without enough going on to keep a experienced gamer from being too bored because it plays simultaneously and quickly. With new folks it will go a bit longer. Short enough to be filler. Some tense card drafting tactical decisions.

Great little solo dungeon crawl style card game where each card serves multiple purposes. Elegant gameplay, innovative little card based stat trackers, very portable. The art doesn't bother me too much, but it is pretty bad. Game is great, begs to be picked up by a real publisher who can invest in the graphic design. (Which is at least efficient if not pretty) Don't recommend for more than 2, can get slow.

The rules seem so simple, yet playing it is complex and intense. So little cash, so many decisions. Each turn is agonizing; upgrade, deliver, buy? I think this one is going to take a long time to master. Its a masterpiece, seems perfect in every mechanic and how it all integrates into a whole. The only reason it is not rated higher is that it is a bit heavy and intense to want to play it all the time. And I'm just not really enamored of train-heavy economic games.

Storytelling in a B-Movie cold war movie style. Awesome if you likes storytelling and can deal with some randomness. More an experience like Tales of the Arabian Nights than a game. But, it has its issues. The henchmen seem like a gambit, and can leave the purpose of the story feeling flat. Plenty of replay-ability with the encounter book. I enjoy it solo.

I suck at this game! I love it anyway. To worker placement what El Grande is to Area Control, and I like worker placement games. Lots of variety in the cards -- improvements and occupations -- but if you don't get a set that really meld into a strategy for you they aren't completely necessary. Agonizing decisions on what to do when to make the best farm possible. I would give it that coveted 10 if scoring didn't make my brain melt. Thank god there is an app for that. Still that is part of its charm. Rarely will you get a perfect farm that doesn't loose some points for not having everything. You are constrained to doing the best you can. So hey, maybe I don't suck so badly, I'm just wanting impossible farming perfection.

Excellent expansion. Adds even more complexity, but changes the balances of the starting resources. Its a bit easier to bake and get wood, but now heat is also required. New action choices change up the turn order a bit. Even more to think about...

This has been a great gateway game for me, especially with the female relatives. Introduced mother and aunt over thanksgiving, and sister-in-law over chrismas -- in a game where my mother pwned us both. Must be something about the gardens that is appealing. A bit of luck involved, crimped in the last game because the pieces I needed kept ending up on the orange market tile, and no orange money was coming up to pick. I think I'll be aquiring the expansion that adds the ability to pay for things with different currancy. They may also breathe a little new life into the game. Highly recommended for 2 to 3 players.

I wanted to like this more than I do, its Doris and Frank, after all! The artwork, box and bits are lovely, the theme is neat and the gameplay is unique. Therein lies the problem, its a bit fiddly and is going to take several plays to understand the rules and make the game more fun and have less downtime. Great idea, execution less than perfect.

Any imperfections this game might have, and it does have some, are completely covered up for me by the fact that it is DRIPPING with mood and theme. Its also cooperative, which is uncommon, and more adventure based in that cooperation than LoTR or Shadows over Camelot. Great for my LARP and RPG buddies. But, you have to have set aside hours in which to play it. You have to understand that its random and can be difficult to win; and well.. it can be a bit fidly. If you are a horror geek, its still worth the ride! It would have scored higher if I had more time for 3+ hour games.

Very cute and amazingly portable game. I just can't argue with a game that takes so little room in my purse! It has some issues with randomness, in that the game can be broken if the wrong tiles come up all at the beginning or all at that end. Play with a variant that shoves the spider tiles into equivilent sections of the draw; the same could be done with the leaves too I suppose although I haven't tried to incorporate that yet. There are some great sticker additions on the geek here to put pictures on the tokens. Play with the expansion for more tiles and additional item mechanics. You can fit the expansion and the main game all into one of the little boxes. Would I play it as much if it weren't portable? Probably not; but it always seems to get packed along in that itty space nothing else will fit.

It looks, from the bits and rulebook, FAR more complicated than it is. I had to convince my Significant Other to stick with it while we were trying to figure out the rules. She did, and just about snuck a completed route in on me! It is easier to grasp that it appears once you start. Its a wonderful gateway game, and best for two. Once this one is down, you can move on to other tile placement.. exploration... area control games. But, for two, expect to come back here frequently. Good enough not to get old. Use glass counters to mark off what buildings you've already place on your mats -- it makes things much easier.

Fast simple blind bidding and negotiation game with wonderful bits. Out of the Box edition. Perhaps a bit too simple? Could be a good gateway introduction to those game mechanisms, and its bright spot is its only 30 minutes or less to play. This so fired Shadows Over Camelot. The best semi-coop (traitor type) game out there. But, if you aren't familiar with the show you'll be missing something in the theme. Deceit, distrust and bluffing abound. You have to play with a group of people willing to go there and work as teams to that end. If they aren't, or its the wrong group, it can fall horribly flat.

Its a thematic blast! Which is a good thing, because then we can sweep the difficulty the occasional scenario broken-ness and the REQUIRED lengthy FAQ and errata under the carpet and pretend not to notice. Eh, its still fun; better for 3-4 than more. Just pray the right conditions exist for your scenario and it doesn't break. If it does, laugh, start again and have fun. Lowered rating, several games have done what this tried to do, only better. See Flying Frog Productions.

Scratch that 'missing magic and the thousands I spent on cards' itch. Wonderful artwork, refined gameplay, easy to teach, expandable for excellent replay value. Highly recommended for two, especially if the fantasy theme works for you. While it is easy to teach, since much of the specifics are on the cards themselves your play time will significantly decrease and your enjoyment increase with strategy over more plays.

It looks scarier and more complicated than it actually is, might be the violently bright and plentiful bits. Usual Feld thin theme with many ways to grab points, but it works smoothly and scales well.

What a sweet, tight, solid, entertaining game. Another Wallace gets it right. Can be a bit difficult to understand what is going on at first, but instead of taking sides, you are influencing both in order for your interests to come out on top. The mechanics push historical-like events, almost like a wargame. Many many tough decisions, and an almost Knizia like scoring that forces you not to neglect one side for a higher score on the other. This one needs many more plays.

I'm not always fond of elimination games, but this one's theme and speed make it bearable. It is an EXTREMELY fun and fast party filler. Bluffing, outguesing and a bit of intimidation required. Besides, who can resist aiming a foam gun at his buddies' head? Rapidly becoming a favorite friends hanging out game. Bang + a little more going on underneath.

Purchased on the game day special. Its exactly the sort of theme I love. But the production values are horrid. Ugly art, cheap board and cards. Its not at all pretty. What seems like a light tile laying game actually has some depth and choice of tactics. The theme works, and the tension and pressure to choose your backpack contents, what points you want to work for, and how far to push it convey the theme well.

I love the inclusion of the voice of the people. Plays well with 2, need to try it with more. Simple, strategic, abstract, plays well with 2 and 3, what's not to love? While the rules are very simple, there are very interesting aspects to the gameplay; a little bluffing in that you do not know what color your opponent is, and you must try to hide your color, different ways to score over time in different areas. Its a little dry, but so simple, fun and colorful that you'll never notice. Colovini masterpiece.

This game can go either way. On the surface it seems to be not all that interesting and with just way to many options for races and powers. With the right group of people it becomes a mass of bluffing and negotiating and working to keep the leader down. If your group doesn't understand that social aspect of the game, or their are inexperienced folks it can fall flat. When it works with the right group, its one of the best games of all time. If it didn't require the right group, I'd rate it a 10. As it stands, there are some groups I wouldn't always want to play it with.

I've not been a war gamer, but the reviews and comments on this one made me give it a try. The historical period also appeals to me. While a game of even this length won't get on the table often, it appears to be an elegent simulation of historical events. And a war game with less than 10 pages of rules is one I can certainly work with.

This is another one of those games that is amazing with the right group. If you are tired, like I am, of munchkin addicts, introduce them to this, you won't be sorry. Get the expansion that adds differences to the adventurers.

Players have to work together to defeat the challenges, but only one can land the death blow, everyone else gets nothing. So this leads to negotiation, inevitable betrayals, laughter and squeals of outrage. Make sure your group can handle that.

The marriage of a euro auction game and an ameritrash theme heavy combat game. It works fantastically! And I usually HATE auction games. Somehow, here, it works. Wonderful balance, tensions, strategic options and dripping theme.

Euro style worker placement dice game with a fantasy theme. Who doesn't want to command hordes of the undead to pillage cities? Its light, it is VERY luck driven by the dice. But, it is easy to set up and teach, and plays pretty fast. Not bad it you want something light.

Solo zombie survival goodness. Wargame, a lot to track, but nice mechanisms drive the game forward. Not as nice to look at as the big box mini solo-able zombie games, but a bit more meat to the actual game.

Sad I sold the old edition when this one was announced. The rules are streamlined, and it plays quicker. But some of the soul has been sucked out. It will still get played, but now it just competes with the D&D move and whack dungeon crawls.

Stunning filler for a larger group. A great push your luck game. Perfect for introducing non-gamers and use as a light gateway game. Its only drawback is the expense; but really the bits are worth it and a large part of the appeal, first impressions and all that.

Avalon Hill Edition. The Grand Daddy of all negotiation games. Amazingly innovative for its time, and it still holds up well. The mechanics are simple, but rubust enough to deal with varied styles brought to the table. It would be rated higher, if it were something I could get to the table, or feel like getting to the table more often.

Chaotic, light, silly area control game. Balance is best with the group is willing to reign in the leader, and are good at hiding or bluffing what their win condition is while trying to discern others. Theme works well, a must for fans of the books, but that won't keep those who aren't from having a decent time.

Tiny chits, 80s production values, tendancy to run long if you are about screwing up the leader but its easy enough to teach, and the theme gives it a bump up. Still basically fun.

Amusing theme and mechanics. Can be a bit luck laden, but interesting for families, children and non-gamers. Purchased to amuse a light game enjoying, dog loving, relative -- for which it worked perfectly. Not something I'm likely to pull out strictly for my own enjoyment. Can't beat the little dog pieces.

Its a vicious, cruel, long, brain-burning masterpiece. Expect your species to die horribly due to circumstances or your opponents actions. Your 'state' will swing, and you will need to tactically respond to that, but there are still some underlying strategies to be employed. Its not perfect, its a bit dry and abstract and LONG, but you will be engaged the entire time.

This is a great family game that also plays well for two. Pretty pretty bits and artwork. Wonderful production values and a Dice Tower! Basic roll and move set collection, with some Knizia style twists. Random element has some influence, but it can be mediated by strategy.

Interesting card driven two player fight game with a fantasy theme. One plays the dragon, one the three dwarves. But it is a light war game, which some will dislike. Overall well balanced, Dragon is strong, but the three dwarves can combine strength.

I struggle with this one. I so want to like it more. A bidding and auction game that in some cases makes them seem not as important, as entertaining as they might be. Something with the turns taken also seems imbalanced with three and four. Of course it could just be that I'm not very good at planning ahead for the optimal strategy, which seems to be required, and not a huge fan of blind bidding.

Super brain burning, hard game. It will screw you over hard. Its all about doing the best you can managing all the elements and dealing with what it serves up.

Multiple mechanics are combined in an innovative way that evokes the theme of Dungeon Keeper. Don't be pulled in thinking this will be ameritrash dungeoneering. This is a tight hard and heavy euro.

A quick and easy hack and slash. Scratches that role-playing itch, and unlike Descent, doesn't require one person to play the adversary. Once you know the characters, cards and powers, luck appears to play less of a factor and the fun shines.
