This is a much better two-player variant than some of the non-official ones I've tried. It addresses the issues of wide-open board space by adding two dummy players (not as bad as it sounds) to help confine options. It compensates for the lack of trading with a forced trade mechanism. It also throws in an extra dice roll on your turn to help speed things up a bit. It is not as good as three or four players, but it does capture the spirit of the original game when you need a Catan kick and you've only got one other player.
I agree it is a great 2 player adaptation. I have been longing for a way to play the game with 2 players and this really helped. One irritation for us was the frequency the robber is rolled - you have about a 30% chance of rolling the robber on your turn, or about 52% chance it will be rolled on either your next turn on your opponent's next turn, which means you will often discard resources.
I think it looks good, except for the ability to move the robber with a trade token. Maybe if you could only move the robber to the desert with the trade token OR force a trade.
