18AL box top low 03.pdf (1.71 MB) (Log in or Register to download.)
This is the box art and cardboard layout for the "Koryo" graphic redesign of Mark Derrick's 18AL. You will need a high performance plotter to print this out. There are only the slightest DIY instructions included "on" the printout, so good luck. Both the top and bottom cardboard layouts are in this file.

Warning: I would highly recommend book binders adhesive and make sure it is printed on thin matte paper. Have it 1 mil laminated or spray with Krylon Preserve It! matte finish found at photo or art stores.

So, what program supports multi-volume zip files. 7-Zip does not. Any chance of uploading a single .Zip file, or a multi-volume .RAR file?

Sorry about that. www.winzip.com is what I used to create it. I couldn't get a single large file to upload with out timing out, so I followed the instructions of BGG which suggested segmenting the file. I was assuming that it would be concatenated on the other end, but that didn't happen.

I use IZARC and it worked just fine. Part 5 is actually the "first" file, I just unzipped that and IZARC did the rest.

Very nice work, I am looking forward to printing out my own set. One minor quibble if it was available as a 2 piece 11x17 size paper, that would really help out. Looking into it its going to cost me an extra 30 bucks to get printed at my local kinko's.

Just a thought I don't know how hard that is to do. Or is it possible to do from my end?

Anyways thank you for your hard work on this I really appreciate people who create work for the BGG community and offer it up at no charge

Ryan,

Yes you can.

This is the print dialog from Acrobat.

http://img33.imageshack.us/img33/4922/18al11x17printsetup.gi...

Set the page size to 11x17 landscape. Then select the drop down 'Tile large pages' under 'Page Scaling:'. Next, make the 'Overlap:' at 2 inches or so and print.

If you want a simple butt joint, trim one page down just inside of the 2" overlap. This will enable you to overlap and line up the pages to one another. While lined up, carefully tape both sides of the sheets together in the white space outside of your graphics. Cut through both sheets at the mid point.

Or you can follow the board wrapping steps in the 'Read Me' to make mounted boards with a small modification to the overlap edge. Actually this technique will produce the nicest looking folded board edge.

Cheers,
Koryo

There is a way to split a .PDF file into smaller pieces so that you can print them onto an A4 printer, and it is available for Windows and Linux users for free.

The program is called pdfPoster, and it is available here:
http://pdfposter.origo.ethz.ch/wiki/pdfposter

Unfortunately the program is poorly documented. I discovered that it helps to copy the map file (currently 18AL Map Kory v4.pdf) into the pdfPoster directory and work in there. I renamed it to something much shorter: 18al.pdf

pdfPoster is run with the syntax:
pdfposter [options] input_file output_file

After some experimentation I found the following options worked for me:
pdfposter -s 1 -m 7x10inch 18al.pdf 18al_a4.pdf

"-s 1" tells pdfPoster to maintain the original scale of the input document.

"-m 7x10inch" tells pdfPoster that you want the resultant pages to be 7 inches by 10 inches.

"18al.pdf" is the input file.

"18al_a4.pdf" is the output file.

You can or course, tell it whatever size you wish. 7 x 10 inches resulted in pages that I can print on my "1 label per page" paper.

Dick

I have exchanged emails, off forum, with Cory on this one. I have just installed the current latest free Adobe Reader which is v9.1.0 onto an XP box and checked the options, there is NO tile printing. When I was lucky enough to have access to a full copy of Adobe Acrobat, it had the tile option.

Could somebody else please confirm this, or have Adobe put the tile option into a later version of Reader that I am unaware of? If so, can you please supply the URL?

Thanks!

I can also confirm that with my free version of adobe acrobat, I see no tiling option in the print dialog. I figured it was a function of the printer, to be honest. Although the printer I have here is fairly sweet.

A thing that is confusing to me, no one seems to be mentioning that the market is fairly large too. Should I shrink this one to fit?

I used pdfPoster on the market, too, and it turned out the same size as the map. It looks good! I also printed out an A4 version to put on the back of the box...

Fantastic job! Thank you for sharing this. I'm in the process of making the game now (art board and full page labels).

I only have two nits (really just one and a half):

1. The train ownership limits printed on the corporate charters is incorrect. You have them the same as the train distributions.

2. What is the purpose of the numbered "R/R crossing" tiles?

Anyway, it looks great.

The numbered "R/R Crossing" cards are most likely used to determine random player seating order at the beginning of the game. This is really their only purpose.

I see that there is still the problem with Corinth, the values are changed, but what limit problem are you saying?

On each corporate charter, he has as column giving the "Ownership Limits" for the trains during each phase. These have the wrong values. It appears that he used the train distribution numbers. For instance, during the 2-train phase, the maximum number of trains a corporation is allowed to run is 4, while his charter lists 5. Instead, 5 is the total number of 2-trains available. Similarly, for the 6, 7, and 4D phases, the train ownership limit is 2, not 1, 1, and 5 as written on his charters.

Oh I see it says Ownership Limit, but it is the total ammount of trains avalaible to all players, while in table 1 lists another values:
Trains / Own.Limit
2 - > 4
3 - > 4
4 - > 3
5 - > 2
6 - > 2
7 - > 2
4D -> 2

Nice to know as I have my first game next week, I have to upload some pictures of the final product.

I actually Photoshopped the charters to correct the train limit column. It doesn't look quite as good as the original, but since I'm a newbie, I didn't want the charters to contradict the rules.

Again, I can't thank Koryo enough for this fantastic package!

Innacuracies are two afaik:

- Corinth city values are inverted, they must be:
1-4 : 40
5-7: 30

And the Ownership limits in the companies track as dicussed above:

I have a map file with the corrected image, the one I Gimped and used for printing, for the tracks I plan to just paint with a labeles over the numbers so where you have an X:

4
5X
4
3
2
1X
1X
5X

So you get the real ownership limitsjust looking the last value.

For the record, I really apreciate Koryo job and I contacted him about the file mistakes long ago, at least the map one.. IIRC but I supposed he is busy.

I know this has been pointed out before, but I wonder if it isn't really a misprint in the original map. The rules state:

For Meridian and all off-board locations, two values are shown in a box; the lower value applies until the first 5 train is purchased, and the higher value applies for the rest of the game.

The term "higher" is somewhat ambiguous. Does it mean "higher in position on the printed map", or does it mean "higher in value"? I would have thought the word "top" would have been used if he meant the former. What would the thematic justification be for one of the off-board cities to drop in value as the game progressed?

It isn't common, but there is precedent (eg Virginia in 18TN).

Elsewhere I see the map on the BGG, the 1.64 manual, the stand alone map on the author's website, the correct values are those.

Someone can try to contact the designer and ask, I think I am playing like this, as this is the way I have printed

The cities in question lose their importance as a result of their industries becoming less profitable or obsoleted. Alternately, people leave town.

Sure,I extracted it from the PDF, modified and save it as TIF, so It's a big file. Also I removed all the black border, I just print that on A3 and it is the right size for me.

Standard disclaimer, Im not the owner of the file and so.. bla bla

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

If you have a problem uncompressing it try with 7zip It's free.

EDIT: Look the map before printing, I cut the borders so it fits an A3, so maybe it does not fit your printer size. You've been warned

EDIT 2 : Removed link

Sorry, I just found this thread today. I love the job Koryo has done with my 18AL game and don't visit BGG as much as I used to. You are correct in that Corinth should be worth 30 after the first five train has been bought. My reasoning was that Birmingham emerged later in the game, cities like Corinth became less important. The map shows my intent though I can see my rules are ambiguous about this. I got John Galt to help me with an overhaul of the rules format with 18MEX and although they are longer and some might say dryer, they are probably cleaner to avoid confusion like this. I guess I need to revise my rules to clear that up sometime....

I have contacted Koryo offline about whether he might be able to make up some ready to play copies for me to give as prizes at next year's Chattanooga convention. My understanding is that John Galt has now sold out his last remaining copies of both 18AL and 18GA. With these files, I might be able to try to make a couple of copies for myself. Thanks again to Koryo for his fantastic work!

Really liked the new artwork for the game! I had the original stuff, but re-doing it really helped it hit the game table.

I noticed the value for Gadsden is 30 on the new map and only 20 on the old. Plus there is a small town dot in the Phenix City hex (sp?).

Cory - I assume you did this on purpose, but I wanted to mention it, just in case it was a versioning glitch.

The cut/seam on the main map that you suggest does not bisect the image; it's a little off-center. Some of the images I see, people go ahead and cut in the center instead (which does not fall on a hex edge, as you indicated it should). I'm not looking at it this second, but as I recall you had some discretion with the border, so I was a little insecure cutting it off-center.

I also could never find the little seam markers in the tabs, along the side; that didn't matter too much, except it made it hard to confirm your intent.

This would of worked well with the trains as well. Did you do that on them? Just wondering if you already have it done, before I start.

I went to ArtsCow to order one of this set, but I couldn't decide on the output format, it offered from 4x6" up. Which is the appropiate one to have it printed as cards? Thanks a lot. And thanks to Kory for a great work. Does anyone has some instructions on how to print and put together the map for the game. This may be my first 18xx game. Thanks!

With the one printout, there are nested outlines for the four different layouts needed to be cut that make a full box. Cardboard bottom, cardboard top, paper wrap bottom and the printout itself to be cut and used for the paper wrap top.

You need to provide the cardboard and paper for the bottom. I use acid free black paper. You can use what ever you want or nothing at all. I didn't say it was going to be easy.

Good luck.

So the idea is that I use the same printout to get the dimensions of the cardboard box, and then use the print out once for the top and once for the bottom? So, then, theoretically it would look the same from above as below, then right?

Use the print out to transfer the dimensions for the cardboard and bottom paper layout.

Steps:
Trim the print down a bit so that the dimension lines run to the edge of the printed sheet.

Secure the print to the cardboard and extend the appropriate lines to the cardboard sheet.

remove the print and complete the layout with a ruler and a pencil

Cut out the pattern.

For the cardboard, make a single slice on each tab (not all the way through!) that allows the tabs to be folded.

Repeat for the other cardboard sheet and the bottom paper wrap. Be careful to extend the appropriate dimensions because each part is a different size.

Test fit to make sure you have transferred and cut the appropriate dimensions. If they are correct, then cut out the print.

The bottom paper uses the same tab length as the printout, but the tab widths are smaller. If you look very carefully, there are little targets for the bottom paper tab locations printed just inside each corner of the main box top graphics.

Fold, setup, and glue the boxes before wrapping.

Bit of a puzzle really.

How can I do this (get rid of the black border and create 2 A4 files)?

Any suggestions?

I am a bit confused that the tiles numbered 142 in the hexes pdf does not look like the tiles numbered 142 in the tile manifest at http://www.diogenes.sacramento.ca.us/18xx_net/tiles/18AL.htm
Am I missing something?

What size did you have the map and market printed? And what size were the boards you purchased (and do you mind sharing where you bought the boards from)?

Thanks in advance!

This won't work without resizing as the map without the black borders is roughly 306x400 mm. I have printed the board (and the market) scaled to 96% on four A4 pages and glued them together. Double the work but it can be done. I have then laminated each two of the map pieces in one pouch for A4, because they are always a bit bigger. My pouches are 216x303 for example. Just stick them together with sticky tape on the back before laminating.

My method was to import the original one-size pdf into gimp at 300dpi and to create four map pieces of exactly equal dimensions. I cropped the black border first so I had the map cropped to 3622x4730 pixels at 300 dpi. Each one of the four pieces thus ended at being 1811x2365 pixels. The resulting gimp file with all four pieces is roughly 50 MiB for the Market and 55 MiB for the map.

You could try to resize the map even further to make it fit to two A4 sheets but then you would also have to resize the track tiles as you couldn't use your existing tiles from other games. In fact the tiles from 1835 are still too big even now but the ones from 1830 are okay.

Hope this helps.

I tried to get the map and market printed out for me at kinkos but they say that there is a copyright on the file and they cannot print without a release for the copyright. Is this on the site and i am missing it? I see that other ppl have gotten them printed out professionally with success, and I'm not sure what the difference is now.
