RftG Military Takeover Summary

This is the first revision. There are no substantive changes... just some wording and formating. When I get time I'll try to do a version with a pretty border and/or background.

RftG Military Takeover Summary r0.pdf (25 KB) (Log in or Register to download.)
The Military Takeover Rules are used only occasionally and are therefore difficult to remember. The rulebook presents them in a prose form that is difficult to absorb "on the fly". Hopefully, the bulletized and reorganized summary will make it easier for players to use them.

Credit: Username Yargo posted a thread that was an essay on this subject. This summary sourced that thread extensively. Here is a link:

PLEASE provide feedback / corrections if you want to / find any. I plan to do a "rev 2" soon.

While this is technically all correct, I'm not sure it qualifies as a summary. As a summary I think something like:
* Attacker must have and declare use of takeover power, announces target player and world (world must be a legal target as defined by the particular takeover power)
* Attacker may spend temporary military
* Normal settles happen (these worlds don't affect the takeover this turn)
* Defender may spend (additional) temporary military [temporary military already spent counts]
* Attacker wins if total relevant strength vs target world is greater than or equal to defender's total relevant strength vs target world PLUS the world's defense. [Attacker wins ties; a good on the world goes to the new owner.]
* If attacker wins, it counts as placing a settlement for purposes of bonuses.

Yes, there are things I left out like interrupted temporary military and multiple people trying to take over the same world, but those are rare cases anyway, and if you're trying to create a summary that could be used as a player aid, you want it short, not twice as long as the rulebook.

Thumbs for the effort though!

Nice Summary!

I agree with you, mine is more of a bulletized rules re-write. However, it works for me. I did try to relegate most of the rare exceptions to footnotes. I already see a couple of wording changes that need to be made for clarity / grammar.

Also note that I explain the Settle Phase (which has 3 steps now) in order to explain how Takeovers work in context. This is not done in the rulebook (fairly) but I find that including it adds clarity.

Feedback welcome! Thanks.

Thanks for the effort; however I believe the description is incorrect for Imperium Seat - the card may only be used to takeover Rebel military worlds, rather than any military world in a tableau containing Rebel military worlds.

Thanks Andrew. Since what you say is stated clearly on the card, and my summary does not contradict it, I think the summary is fine as it stands. I do not feel the need to make this distinction on the summary since it is a restriction clearly stated right there on the card.

Note that I do not repeat all the text of any other card either.

Regards,

Foob

I actually agree with Andrew--I lost that in all the text the first time I read it. The opening paragraph states "makes all your military worlds vulnerable" and then you state that having Rebel Military Worlds makes you vulnerable, which is significantly misleading at best. You could eliminate the "all your military worlds" from the opening paragraph and move it into the two cases where it does apply. Reading what you wrote, without having the Imperium Seat in front of me (but perhaps worrying about the guy with it across the table), I might misunderstand what the situation really is.

Good suggestion. Thanks for the close read.

I think its a summary of the individual rules, though perhaps not a short summary of step-by-step. I think he did a good job of turning my giant essay into a 1 page document

There's no reason why he couldn't add in a bit of step summary like you mention though and have both. Kinda like an outline.
