Power Grid - 1-3 Player Rule Variant - v1.0.pdf (676 KB) (Log in or Register to download.)
While the Standard 4-6 player rules make for a fun and exciting game, the 2 & 3 player rules can be
quite dull. There is virtually no competition after Steps 2 & 3 respectively and plant bidding is
unexciting as players often just pay face value. With these rules the 2 & 3 player game maintains the
excitement and competitiveness of the larger games.

The 1 player rules, are modified from “GameRulesforOne”
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/390207/soloplay-variant-...
integrating the modified 2 & 3 player rules and simplified in some ways in that you are playing “the
board” rather than an “AI.”

Well done - nicely laid out, very readable and I like that you specify what is different from the original rules. Sometimes it's hard with variants to determine what is a paraphrase of original rules, and which wording is actually changing something.

I liked GameRulesforOne's soloplay variant, and like your ideas as well. Look forward to trying it out.

Very professionally laid out. Definitely some great ideas in here. I had some trouble though. While playing the two player game, I ran into some problems. Firstly, my wife cut me off in step 1 allowing me to build only 5 cities. Thats fine, however she sat on 6 cities and refused to build more until she collected enough $$ to basically win the game. I was unable to do anything except collect $$ as well, turn after turn. Very boring. She eventually activated step 2. We each selected territories that were cut off from each other. With our piles of cash, I built the maximum number of cities I could possibly build, 12 (5 from the original region and 7 from the new one). My wife built 14 and powered all of them, winning the game. Am I missing something in the rules? Is it possible that if someone is cut off after 4 cities are built in step 1, the game is basically over?

Sorry to hear you had a bad experience. I am trying follow what exactly happened.

Why couldn't you just connect through her cities to get your 6th or 7th city? Was it too expensive to connect? Remember there is no "blocking" in Powergrid (vanilla or this variant), but placing cities around your network can make the connection costs higher.

Ahh. Thanks for the explanation. I thought only 1 city of ANY color per connection was allowed. Am I allowed add a city to my opponent's connection in step 1? Would it cost 20 for the connection if I did?

In Powergrid you don't own connections you own cities.
1 player can own a city but as many players as you want can use those connections to buy up new cities. This especially applies to the vanilla rules.

Thanks for the tip. I am new to Power Grid and misunderstood one of the basic rules that allows a player to build THROUGH connections. I will have to give it another try with this knowledge. Thanks again for the clarification. Now to get my wife to play another game...

I've yet to try 2p with the standard rules (though we might give it a shot to see how it plays), but this 2p variant does play pretty well (disclosure: I've not yet played with more).

There is a lot of thought into building your network, and you have to be cognizant of getting blocked in (and you will get blocked in), and the capacity penalties definitely mean that you'll need to build new plants constantly. I ended up losing because I needed to connect all the way across the map to get my 14th city (though she could have built there anyway and guaranteed I would have been blocked out).

I do wish that the plant auctions would be more active. With only two players there isn't often much incentive to bid too aggressively, as you can often get a pretty good plant at cost if you pass (sometimes, especially with the eco plants, bidding can get interesting, or sometimes you'll need a high capacity plant, due to capacity penalties). Having only three plants to choose from does tighten the plants up a bit.

Also, of course, the resource market can be a bit too open. With two players there may not be much resource overlap and you'll both be getting resources uncontested (and it seems a little like it favors the oil and coal plants, as you can get many resources cheaply).

I think it was a success.
