Thunderstone Epic Variants v1-1.pdf (21 KB) (Log in or Register to download.)
Document Version 1.1

I added a note in the New Actions section to specifically note that both Tom Vasel and I use Richard Launius's Discard Top Offer (Village Action), and that I also use Tom Vasel's Market Variety (Village Action).

Thunderstone Epic Variants.pdf (20 KB) (Log in or Register to download.)
This is a PDF with the popular Epic Thunderstone rules by Richard Launius. The original variant is listed side by side with Tom Vasel's version, and my own. There are also a few of my other favorite variants included at the end of the document (credit given where due).

I have permission from both Richard and Tom to share this document.

Thanks for doing this Yoki.
You should put your name on the PDF and give it a version number.
Also, thanks for mentioning me as an "influence". modest

I like Stephen Schaefer’s and Rickard Eriksson’s Modified Game Setup.
I makes sense to adjust the amount of cards per village stack.

I need to buy some little colored dots to mark the cards for easier post-game sorting.

I have also realized only two cards of a given type are needed if you own all of the expansions.

Yoki, I like all of your mods with a few exceptions:

- 3 spell stacks, the 3rd one being just offensive spells (fireball, ice bolt, etc.,) anything that has a Magic Attack.
- 3 weapon stacks, the 3rd being Magic Attack weapons
I do like your idea of mixing magic items with magic weapons though.

I hoping these changes will get my group to play wizards more.

I didn't see this in the rules. Do you use all copies of each village card in creating your stacks?

I do, but Richard Lanius does not. I think he's currently just using two of each card.

Thank you Yoki for your contributions to Epic Thunderstone. I whole heartedly agree with your adding Recuperation to the Rest turn option. Getting XP is more important when level two and three heros can't be bought. We did something similar except it was a separate turn option called "Training".

One thing we do that alleviates some of Tom's reasoning for creating a leveled dungeon is to draft our staring cards rather than using the starting twelve cards (which are generally pretty bad). We each start with 60 gold (the average card costs about 5 gold and we wanted to start with about 12 cards). Then we take turns buying from the village. All rules about removing the top card of village stacks still apply. For theme's sake we reason that the king or local nobles have put us in charge of assembling a party that can stop the monsters threatening the village.

This variation has a few pros and cons:
-CON: Cards that mention Militia are generally obsolete (some cards could still work if you treat the word "militia" as "hero"). Thornwood Siege really takes a hit with its emphasis on making militia matter.
-PRO: There are new layers of strategy in that drafters must decide how much brute force, light, food, gold value, etc. should go into their starting deck.
-PRO: You can begin creating your deck's engine imediately.
-PRO: Difficult monsters are more managable... even early on. A leveled dungeon isn't needed.
-PRO: Drafting is fun!

What do you think?
