I just finished this variant 2 player. We really enjoyed it! My fiancee never wanted to spend a VP to remove a pumpkin, and she regretted it. She missed a couple of key advisors and I won 58 to 55. We are anxious to try it with the expansion. I think we are going to stick with adding the number of soldiers as the previous year in addition to the token.

Glad to hear it Todd! I almost always play Kingsburg 2-player with my fiancee and it has been quite fun for us as well. We played that the Yellow and red dice could not be placed on advisors with a Jack-O-Lantern token, and were instead split up or discarded (if they could not be placed after being split up). Definitely added a new dynamic and we quickly learned that it may be worth 1 VP to clear out some Jack-O-Lantern tokens!

I think still adding a number of soldiers equal to previous year when playing with soldier tokens makes good sense (although the battles may be pretty tough!)

Yeah the battles were beyond tough. I don't think it worked well with the expansion because of this. Related to this problem is that both 5 & 10 ended up marked and my fiancee refused to spend 1VP to remove one, so one was blocked for a year. That made the battles that much harder. Works great with the base game though, great work!

Maybe if the king sent additional reinforcements equal to the current year instead of the previous year when an enemy comes back as a Zombie? Also, I am surprised that the 5 ended up with a Jack-O-Lantern token - that is some seriously unlucky rolling!
