This is a card game available online. I'm not sure how loosely it is actually based on the war, but I don't think a card game could be that exact.

As the designer of this game, I think I can answer that.
It is very very loose

I made it in the plane between Paris and Philadelphia in 2004. No need to say that it was my first try as a game. Since then, I hope I designed better wargames.
But I should look back and improve this game (one day).

One can leave it out because it is not about the historical FPW but a fantasyland where retreating into fortresses is the preferred French strategy instead of the historical certain doom.

Erroneous - it covers the Battles of Blood and Iron, respectively.

I remember buying that in a shop on the rue Etienne Marcel. Essentially a SPI clone with lots of Republican reinforcements.

How would you rate the war as a games topic? Seriously unbalanced? Vastly more interesting for one side than for the other? More about the logistics of railroad deliveries than actual troop movements and resource allocations? Requiring "iron maiden" rules for the French side in order to mirror reality?

I'm surprised this war has so little coverage, given it's historical importance and the possibilities inherent in the situation. We could do with the Death of Empires system being backdated to this particular era - there are so many parallels between 1870 and 1914 that it seems a waste of an opportunity not to.

I am also for more games on this war because I don't know much about it (only knowing it piecemeally). This is an important war which shapes the modern world boundaries in Europe. Looking at all the lower than a rating 7 of these games, this war seems to suggest it might not be simulated easily with fun. Maybe we are looking for the next "Ted Racier" of the Franco-Prussian war which can change people's perception about the war entirely. What about this upcoming game: Age of Bismarck: The Unifications of Italy and Germany 1859 – 1871.
