"History is the witness that testifies to the passing of time; it illumines reality, vitalizes memory, provides guidance in daily life and brings us tidings of antiquity." -- Cicero
"Let us therefore brace ourselves to our duties, and so bear ourselves that if the British Empire and Commonwealth last for a thousand years, men will still say, This was their finest hour." -- Winston Churchill
In 1940 and 41 Great Britain stood alone against Germany after the fall of France. Churchill said it was it's finest hour and I am not one to disagree with him. If not for Britain's stand the world would be a much different and perhaps darker place. However the British people have had plenty of other fine hours as well and thousands of years of wonderful history. At one time it ruled 1/4 of the world's population and it's impact on our planet's long term history can be compared to that of the Roman Empire. It is a history buff's dream.
One of the great things about games is it allows us to recreate moments in history. We can take the place of Wellington, Nelson, Churchill and some of the great leaders of Britan and relive some of these moments in it's history.
So without further ado, I present the History of Britain...in games.

A small battle in a larger conflict that saw Britian decline as a world power and set the stage for the cold war. (Boy, was that a mouthful)

Probably the game that best shows the British Empire at the height of its power - with masses of counters spread across a massive map.

The British gave the world a super efficient method of public transport.
Of course we kept the inefficient bits for ourselves. Any brit will know exactly what is meant by "Leaves on the line" or "The wrong type of snow"....

In the same vein as Speed Circuit - British Grand Prix. Love the boards for this game.
The very first round of the F1 World Championship was held on the Silverstone racetrack in 1950. This race was won by Giuseppe "Nino" Farina. He would also go on to become the first Formula 1 World Champion in the dominant Alfa Romeo Tipo 158.
This historic racetrack began as a aerodrome during the Second World War. After the war ended and with Donnington Park and the Brooklands falling into the disrepair, the decision was made to fuse the taxiways and runways together to form a very challenging and fast racetrack. The first British Grand Prix was raced here in 1948 (does not conflict with the previous date as there was no world championships until 1950 but there were Grand Prixs). The basis for this original track remains to this day, albeit somewhat modified for logistical and safety purposes. (paraphrase from formula1.com with some personal recollections)

Battle of Culloden 1745 at 50 yards to the hex - the Scots Highlanders must defeat the English and their Scottish allies. Uses a derivative of the system found in BSO's Marlborough game.
Also covers the battle of Prestonpans, also from the '45 rebellion.
