I'm sure that there are alot of games that people rate alot higher than you. You despise the game and bring it up in every list that you can.

What about the games that aren't so well accepted? You love them and many groups just don't get it.
Here is your chance to champion that game that most people seem to be indifferent about or just plain don't like.

What are we missing?

Its short, fun, and accessible to all.
We play this to win and it can bring out the best/worst in us.
There are already plenty of strategies and house rules that we've created. This game is deeper than you might think.
Crokinole is loved by many a Canadian and myself included.
Dont you people recognize that this gem is brilliant for many of the same reasons!?!

So you want controversy do ye? I oculd enter literally dozens, but I'll put it on the table - it's Mouse Chaos. Most poele hate and the desiger with a passion. But I doubt few have actually played it. I have a few times. It's an interesting blend of strategy and memory (perhaps more on the latter). It can drive you bonkers tryng to remember all the mice colors s they move around. The bits are stunning...

I enjoy the game. Does it hit the table that often? No I enjoy it more thenmost of my friends. Do I want pay it all the time? No, maybe 1-2 times a month. But I do ike it. I had done a review on it sometime back - I need to (re)do it again...

I am at a loss as to why this game has such a low rating.

Each player sets their own victory conditions, there is a lot of player interaction and hard decisions have to be made each and every turn.

When playing with a random start every game has new obstacles to overcome and each game is usually tense right to the very end. The 'screw your opponent' factor is very high as well.

Too many people think that this is a race game... it's not. And the as soon as you grasp that fact, the game really comes into its own.

I give it a solid 7.

There is more to this game than meets the dark, shaded eye. In addition to being fast, easy to teach, and friendly for colorblind players, this game actually works on several levels. The partially exposed hands of your opponents allows you to play a closer defensive game than most rummy variants. There are several viable strategies (big score, lots of small scores, pure defense, exposed card bluff) to try against differing opponents. And I really enjoy the "score as you go" element as a change of pace from the usual "go out" rummy scoring, since you can react to the leader within a round instead of in the next round.

A Parker Bros. classic from the 50s. Sure it's a roll-and-move game, but you can pursue your own success formula, have many decisions to make regarding Opportunity cards, and can take the dice out of the game with Experience cards. I've read that more recent editions of Careers have changed it for the worse. Rated 5.62 overall but 9 by me.

My rating: 10. BGG rating: 7.52.

In fact, this is the only game with a ratings difference of greater than 1.00 in my favor.

There aren't very many games that provide the mental workout that Bridge does, and I'm sure a lot of the lower ratings reflect gamers who either ... have only encountered Bridge casually at the kitchen table; or were put off when they were attempting to learn all the intricacies. It's a very long and steep learning curve (but it's well worth the effort).

Escape from Colditz

This is one of my favorite games! One player takes the role of guards while the rest try to bust out of prison! Winning conditions are variable and so is length of play, all agreed upon ahead of time by all the players. At the beginning, players go about the castle trying to collect all the equipment they need to escape but the guards are keeping a close eye on everyone. The last 10-15 minutes of this game gets totally out of control as players make their desperate attempt to flea the castle walls. Lots of fun a definate diamond in the rough.

Chitin I: The Harvest Wars

Metagaming MicroGame #2

I have quite a few Metagaming Microgames. I bought several when I was a kid, lost them and then reacquired many as as adult. Nostalgia plays a big factor in my love for these - but many are decent games in their own right. Creative themes, quick play, portable size - they're just great. The gameplay can be a bit simple compared to what's available today, and the components are pretty cheap.

But c'mon, Chitin I is a game about intelligent insects having wars over food - including dragging off the dead bodies of the enemy. Hehehe...that's cool....

I'd say that a game has to fall below a 6.00 average before you could say it was truly hated by BGGers, but this one comes close at 6.26. I give it a solid 7.5, with an 8 not out of the question. I wrote a whole blog article on it here:

http://boredgamegeeks.blogspot.com/2005/08/old-news-departme...

but the basic gist of it all is that I find the game to be flavorful, tense, and a lot of fun. The feeling is that of a pitched battle where the balance between the two sides always seems to be teetering precariously. The many little M:tG-like details of the game gives one lots to think about, and once the players get to know the two decks there is a certain amount of strategy that can be employed.

Now, if you come into it expecting a CCG, you'll be sorely disappointed, but if you come into it hoping for a souped-up Battle Line, you will quickly achieve a state of psychedness. Unfortunately, it's out of print now, and the sequel, Minotaur Lords, is not quite as good (if you ask me).

This is a low rated one from my collection. I think it shines when played PBEM. The main difference between PBEM and FTF for this game is that the diplomacy and the treaty making become much, much better. I read a lot of complaints about how it fails as a simulation, but it is just a fun *game*. It should be one of the "next things" for anyone who enjoys diplomacy. The game is supported by PBEM utilities like Cyberboard and there is a pretty vibrant PBEM community out there as well, so getting into a game is not too difficult.

the game has a lot of dice, so i can't help anybody with that. the rules can be a bit tricky, though, so i did my best to remedy it with a 1 page color-coded player aid which gives general descriptions as well as exceptions to the standard rules. it's in the files section for the game. i hope it helps somebody, it can be a very fun and deeply thematic game.

This game is my favorite game to play for four people. It's tense, it's taxing, it allows for a great deal of creativity - and yet anyone can play and enjoy it. I think the disparity between BGG's rating (6.33) and mine (9) is a combination of party/social games being devalued here, and perhaps more importantly the game requiring exactly four players. But what do I know?

Hard to find, but a terrific party game. Scaleable to "6" quite easily. The bidding mechanism is lively, all in pursuit of a silly Inheritance (or 69 points, in game parlance). Only rap on this is that there's no "end game" reward. Have played it with a $5 entry fee and the action turns into serious fun.

TV Wars can be a real hoot once you've played it more than once. The spoof names are quite funny but this game scores really well in the stupid-but-fun category. There's lots of auctions so generally people don't know what to pay, but it works out okay as resources are quite tight. Better with 4 players than with 3 as the casualties/cancelled shows get spread out more and it becomes less likely to result in a runaway leader situation.

Awesome, fun game of bluff and strategy. Oh, and sculpi clay. And corrupt contractors bribing public officials.

Players are contractors constructing buildings Some of your clay blocks are shoddy plaster (all clay) and others are high-quality materials (clay outside, wood cube inside). Take turns building and bribing inspectors to test other players' bricks with a toothpick... pure genius. Score for buildings and unspent wood cubes. Half the fun is playing with the clay!

A classic that you can teach in 2 minutes, and you'll never forget the looks on everyone's faces as their buildings are tested.
