Thumb any post that you qualify for. If a post gets 20 thumbs up...score 20 points. The more thumbs, the more points.

Post your scores as a geeklist comment. (You might wait a while to total your scores as the thumbs should fly!)

If you think of another thrifty action that I did not post, feel free to post it. (You may have to thumb your own post...prepare yourself appropriately.)

After a while, I will post the results.

Remember the first step is to admit you have a problem great hobby.

(Also, feel free to tell some of your shameful thrifty stories.)

Apparently, no one liked my scoring system...so I win (3001 pts.)

Ok, your way is easier 22/49

Guilty. The two-part box contained a 15 year old computer game for an operating system and hardware I have never owned. It was cheaper than the similarly sized empty box at Michaels. Three PnP board games now live in that box, which sports a new look.

The BGG app is on my most used list. I almost always check it when I see something that might be interesting.

I just wish the app was better...

Begin App rant:
1. It never shows the BGG rank (even though there's a spot for it)
2. The rating is the user rating, not the adjusted rating that's pushed more on the site.
3. There's no way to check out the price ranges through the app
...End Rant

In the end, I'm glad the app is there, but I usually have an online retailers site open to check prices, and sometimes have to use Safari to look up the BGG site to get more info.

Labyrinth: The War On Terror is historically inaccurate & politically biased. It's the one popular game that violates BGG's requirements to keep politics out of gen. discussion. And yet it receives special treatment =US-centric views of this site.

This is a thrift list so, de facto, "used" or, at the very least, donated or reduced in price.

So no, not everyone will have bought at "other places" which might be craigslist, ebay, local library sales, etc. IOW, non-retail sources - places where thrifters would look.

Personally, whenever I hear of someone who has an inside contact at a thrift store, I think of that guy and I think a little less of both the store and the person who has the contact.

I have a bigger issue with the employees at the local St. Vincent's getting first dibs on the items that come in. They keep it behind the counter (where they also have more valuable items on display) until the end of their shift, then get one of the other clerks to ring them up. The stuff never has a chance to make the floor and I always wonder on the pricing.

Really bugs me when I see something and ask about it and I'm told "Oh, no, that's mine. Isn't it great?" shake

Regarding stores having 'preferential' customers, I'd be annoyed as well. But if that's the business model they want to follow then that's their choice, even if it means that they might lose me as a customer for them never having items on the shelves that interest me.

Regarding firing employees, if there are set rules of conduct for a store and an employee repeatedly transgresses those rules, or singularly transgresses a major rule, then sure, 'discipline up to and including termination' is pretty common and acceptable. In general though I balk at the kneejerk response to have someone sacked from some already low paying job just because they didn't live up to someone's concept of the ideal customer experience.

Regarding thrift stores that allow for employees to get first pick of donated items, again, that's the store's choice. My wife works for a cell phone company; we get super cheap phones and calling plans. I used to work for Borders a long time ago; we got free promo cds and books all the time on top of getting discounts on just about everything in the store and a deep discount on employee discount day. What kind of perk is the thrift store worker going to get, our smiling faces as we buy all that awesome stuff that they don't get to touch? Sure, any thrift store wouldn't want their employees pricing stacks of $100 items for $1 each then setting them aside for self purchase when they should, even by thrift store standards, be priced higher. But I could well imagine and not be offended at all by a perk program that let an employee set aside an item or three a day that were priced by a manager or someone else.

Sorry to go against everyone's grain here. If a store doesn't put something out on the shelf I like they don't get my two dollars this week. What's to complain about? It's not like they're spewing oil into the ocean and making record profits at the same time.

My "insider" is the owner of a store that sells the contents of storage units he purchases. I always give him grief about not finding the motherlode of storage units full of games. He always assures me that, "Someday..." I look forward to that day. (It helps that I've spent plenty of $$$ on other merchandise he has uncovered. Gotta keep priming the pump. laugh)

Not necessarily. This is a clinical example of comorbidity with Pathologic NeoPartasthenia, also known as the PnP bug. Symptoms include a weakness for repurposable game components and repeated mumbling of "Chunky Fighters".

This entry probably should say "I have bought more than one copy of Yahtzee Jr."

These themed Yahtzee games have dice with recessed sides, perfect for DIY projects like the above mentioned print & play Chunky Fighters dice game.

I have already posted the entire list of the contents of my Thrift Safari Tool Kit elsewhere, but suffice to say that it includes both implements for slicing tape and replacement tape.

Even when I'm not on a full-on safari, I still will have a utility knife, a Leatherman and a Utili-Key on my person at all times.

I saw a guy doing an inventory on a wooden tile version of Acquire. He then realized he didn't have his wallet. He asked a clerk to hold the game for him as he ran out to get his wallet and cash. Oh, how I wanted to get that game from the clerk while he was out of the building!

However, by seeing how psyched this guy was to find the game, I felt very good for him because I could see how much he appreciated the find.

"I'm sorry sir, you're not allowed back there and all games we have are on the shelves".

Whatever. I know you're lying lady...I know how this works. You're probably back there with your work buddies in the stockroom, holding smoldering cigarettes between tightly pursed lips as all of you huddle around an old, upturned wooden cable spool with a copy of Thunder Road or Hero Quest carefully set up on it, and taking turns deciding if the Gandork the Wizard will get a shot at blasting an Orc with a fireball spell or if he'll be stuck whacking on it with his staff while Torgo the Barbarian cleans up the rest of the room on his turn. And then at the end of the day during cleanup your coworker Gladys from the Men's Shoes department will look over her plastic rimmed Poindexter glasses at the half set up game and say, "You know, my nephew Clarence would probably like this. I think I'll put it in the trunk of my Vega". And I'll end up deprived of a gleaming, glistening copy of Samurai Swords, Scotland Yard, or HeroQuest: Kellar's Keep. Greedy, evil Goodwill woman! Probably stacks of board games back there and you won't even let me peek through the door. You're like Hitler. A board game hoarding Hitler person. Yeah!

This is what I'm thinking when I ask and am denied. Seriously. whistle

Items go out all week long, all day long. But at the Salvation Army they bring the carts out between 4:00 and 5:00 PM daily. At Goodwill, several carts come out around noon, and then again about 3:30. On the weekend, the carts are rolled out all day long, usually 2 at a time. After about 10 minutes (to allow people to swoop in and take a look) they start distributing the items throughout the store.

Of the two Salvation Armies I usually shop at, one puts items out mostly around 11:30 and 3:30. At the other, they fill carts to go out and just push them out on the floor all day. The clerks put them out when they can otherwise there are just carts of new merchandise to go through.

You'd think so but in my experience there's no rhyme or reason. I've seen the same stack of games gather dust in the sorting room for days on end before being put out. I suspect due to full shelves and/or waiting out an ongoing clearance sale.

Yeah, I've been thrifting long enough to agree there is no best day, best time, best month, best anything...I've found fireball island a week before Christmas and practically nothing over the course of the summer (even with all the garage sales during that time)

It's nothing more than luck

I have an above-average memory for geography. Once I've done the route once, I usually don't need a GPS. So while I have a GPS, and have had one since long before Garmin was a household name, I don't bother to program any routes into it.

I do have thrift routes for multiple non-local cities memorized, though. That's gotta count for something.

I can usually find someplace after I've been there once. Sadly, it usually isn't the shortest/best route. That's where my GPS comes in handy for cutting down the time on the road. I sometimes still use it for that purpose around my home town!

yup. update all thrift stores in my points of interest often. i have it ring a bell when within 10 miles of one and I often hit a search for thrift stores "along my route"

i get sad though because I think i've hit everyone one along my usual places of business at least twice and rolling up I know to expect little from certain areas.

I probably won't stop going to them though

14. one suggestion for an item might be frequency of checks (3 a week for me) and if you know when the delivery / new items usually hit the shelf (between 12 and 1245)

Wow, I am almost embarrassed. 45/46 Of course it helps that I am now the store manager of a local thrift store so some of the items (Knowing people that will set aside stuff for you) are unfairly obtained. It's bad that reading this list makes me want to stop by the local Goodwill on the way home from work.
