My wife and I noticed that we were a little too... hermity. We really didn't spend time with people as much as we wanted to. We felt like time was slipping through our fingers and we didn't have much to show for all of our spent years.

I came up with the idea of having a different person over to spend time with every day for a year. No repeats. I slowly began to realize how I could turn this to my advantage.

We live in Canada. There is just not a lot to DO here in the winter. I convinced her that the only activity that we could do to get to really KNOW people was boardgames. Because of this rational, I have been able to significantly increase my collection of games without any repercussions from the wife.

Only trouble is, I'm a heavy heavy gamer. I love the long, strategic Euro. I'm finding that my wife (much less the people we have over) do not enjoy these games as much. I've had to branch into an area that I have little expertise: Gateway Games

I need the help from the BGG community. I need suggestions of great family or gateway games that will engage almost anyone. If you know of one that is a great play and even a little heavier, I'm sure we can squeeze it in occasionally.

btw, here's a link to our progress so far. 1 entry every day for 12 days.

http://knowallthepeople.blogspot.com/2012/01/be-all-little-b...

***PLEASE add your light game with perhaps a description of why you feel it would be good for people new to games, help me BGG, you're my only hope...

EDIT: I've also decided that since I have a surplus of Geek Gold, I plan to give out 10 GG every time I play a game on the list, to the person who suggested it.

Aquadukt is great for new players (plays 2- 4 players). On your turn you can do 1 of 3 things: place a well, place up to 3 sets of houses, or build 1 or 2 aqueducts.
Easy to teach, has a little randomness due to the use of a d20, and definitely plays in under an hour!

Citadels is a fairly simple, versatile (in terms of player number), deduction game. It is also easy to learn: players choose a character out of 8 (or 9) characters each round and then carry out a simple turn to build their city districts. The cleverness is in the character selection: who took the King this turn? Will the thief know I took the Merchant again?

For months I'd walk by this box on the shelves of a local bookstore, impressed by the artwork yet wondering if the $50 price tag was warranted. Thankfully, a coupon came about - yet it assuredly would have been worth it anyways. The replay variability mechanic and what you receive in the box is a bargain. Have yet to incorporate the expansions, but I also love Small World Underground. If you still own both games, send me a GM, I may have an extra Small World: Tunnels for you meeple

I'm surprised that this game hasn't been mentioned yet. Pit is a game about trading resources blindly between players until one player has a monopoly on a certain type of card. This game is fast-paced, fun, easy to learn, easily attainable and cheap. What more can you ask for?

You can get a copy for as cheap as $8 or so on Amazon, but I recommend going for a copy that comes with a bell (like $15)--I bought it as a gift without a bell and my girlfriend got upset, saying the bell was half the fun of the game. Oi.

Anyways, try Pit out, if you haven't already. It's pretty great.

Stick with the classics! I'm surprised no one has put this on the list yet. It's a truly great game. Light enough for non-gamers, yet strategic with meaningful decisions to make. And trading provides lots of opportunity for player interaction. For people who only know Monopoly, this game is a real eye-opener. I've created a number of gamers with this game.

Out of all the games I've introduced my siblings and parents to, this one has been the biggest hit by far. Also, it's suitable for all ages.

Fabula is a storytelling game where the players will help the player playing as Grimm the Storyteller (of the Brothers Grimm Fairytales) in creating a new story. There will be 4 obstacles for the players to overcome in each story and they will take item cards from an open pile and explain how their character will use the item to overcome the obstacle. It's a great excuse to talk in funny accents and have a fun time hearing everyone's ideas.

Also, if you do decide to get it, the default play mode is slightly competitive with the storyteller awarding points like Apples to Apples. I prefer to play with the included variant that removes all competitiveness and allows everyone to focus on the creativity.

Okay, I'm gonna throw in a curve ball. As a standard gateway game for non-gamers, this one is obviously an atrocious choice. But I'm just imagining myself when I didn't yet know about board games, which wasn't as long ago as you might think. There I am and I get invited to play games by some dude I know. I come to his house and we play a card game or a simple gateway game or whatever. I'm having fun.

But somehow the host forgot to close his game closet and I keep looking at it. There's this big box and it has spaceships and weird aliens on it and I just have to keep checking back to make sure it's still there. Finally, I get over my social anxiety:

Me: "What's the cool looking space game in the big box like? Can we play that?"

Host: "Oh, that. That's one of those games that take like a day to play. You really need to schedule at least a free afternoon for that"

Me: "There are games that take a whole day to play?"

Host: "Yeah, heh, I'm kind of a nerd."

Me: "That is so awesome! My wedding was supposed to be tomorrow, but I'm sure I could cancel it if you'd like."

I wrote a review on this game where I attempt to explain why non-gamers like this game here: http://boardgamegeek.com/article/6626192

Whilst I don't actively enjoy the mechanics of the game I do believe it is a great game for non-gamers as people often get excited when they see a tile from a country they have travelled to and travel discussion abounds.

The pace of the game is fast but you are not all consumed with the strategy, this makes it a great game for a catchup conversation.

This is a simple tile laying game that shines due to its political nature. Dwarves are mining for gold but some are greedy and want to hinder their efforts so they can keep the gold for themselves.

The selling point of this game is the shortness of its rounds. It means you can't dwell on feeling betrayed because it only lasted 5 minutes.

This game is a hoot to play with people you know well as you can often read their tells and stir them accordingly.
