Current Preorders: 612 (+25)

First announced: June 2011

Current Status: Made the cut

Preorder Price (List Price): $38 ($57)

Number of Players: 2

Comments: Of all the War of 1812 games in process at the moment, this is one of the two I'm looking forward to the most.

Game Link: http://www.gmtgames.com/p-348-mr-madisons-war.aspx

Game Information: In June of 1812, Napoleon invaded Russia. Meanwhile, on the other side of the world, the young Republic of the United States declared war on Great Britain. It was one of America's most unpopular wars. To commemorate the bi-centennial of this historic event, GMT will be releasing Mr. Madison's War, a strategy game based on the US campaigns to conquer Canada in the years 1812 to 1814.

Mr. Madison's War is a simulation game that depicts the war on the northern frontier of the United States and Canada. From the European perspective it was an off shoot of the Napoleonic Wars that were waged from 1796 to 1815. It is a two player game with players taking the forces of either the United States or Great Britain.

Mr. Madison's War utilizes a variation of Mark Herman's 'card driven game system' which enables players to perform their actions on the game board and score automatic points for the playing of a card as an historical event. The 110 colorful cards include historical information, the year the event took place, and a detailed description of the function of the card.

A definite buy then. I was supposed to be a playtester on this, but couldn't quite understand the rules! Too difficult to get someone from the US to play via Skype to explain. It does have a similar complexity to Wilderness War, but has more complex/strategic rules for reinforcements and set up - something I couldn't get my head around.

Current Preorders: 619 (+25)

First announced: April 2010

Current Status: Made the cut

Preorder Price (List Price): $38 ($60)

Number of Players: 1-2

Comments: Another member of the 600 club.

Game Link: http://www.gmtgames.com/p-345-fading-glory-napoleonic-series...

Game Information: Fading Glory is the second game (No Retreat - The Russian Front Deluxe Edition is the first) we are producing as part of our strategic friendship/partnership with Victory Point Games, and the first game we are producing from their popular Napoleonic 20 series. The idea for this and future volumes is that we will take multiple existing games from the VPG Napeoleonic 20 series, add an as-yet-unpublished game to the mix, and create a GMT boxed game with 3-4 games in the box, using larger (3/4") counters and GMT production.

The Napoleonic 20 game system from Victory Point Games features lower-level wargame complexity on maps where, generally, 20 pieces or less are in play at one time (total, for both sides). This creates tense, dramatic and fast-playing situations on the board where higher echelon troop formations (generally corps) vie for position and dominance. Subscribers to C3i have recently enjoyed Jena 20, a game in this series which features eight pages of Standard rules and one-to-two pages of exclusive rules per title.

Included in this Multi-Pack are:
* Salamanca 20 (Wellington vs. Marmont, 1812)
* Smolensk 20 (Napoleon vs. Barclay de Tolly in the near-battle to decide the Russian Campaign, 1812)
* Borodino 20 (Napoleon vs. Kutusov before Moscow, 1812)
* Waterloo 20 (Napoleon vs. Blucher and Wellington, 1815)

Current Preorders: 623 (+12)

First announced: March 2010

Current Status: Made the cut

Preorder Price (List Price): $57 ($85)

Number of Players: 1-4

Comments: All quiet on the Korean front... so far.

Game Link: http://gmtgames.com/p-306-next-war-korea.aspx

Game Information: Next War: Korea, the first of a planned series of Next War games, allows players to fight a near future war on the Korean peninsula. In this updated and improved version of the previously-released Crisis: Korea 1995, players have access to virtually all military assets of North and South Korea, as well as large forces from the USA and the PRC. The integrated, easy to learn air-land combat system allows for unit efficiency, armor effects, light infantry, attack helicopters, Close Air Support, Cruise Missiles, and the particularly tough terrain of Korea.

Make no mistake: Next War: Korea is not an Introductory wargame. Rather, we have intended herein to create a system (and a series) that will allow detailed study of modern warfare in various venues as well as engaging gameplay. That said, the Standard Game rules encompass a fairly straightforward ruleset that will, we think, be considered pretty "easy to learn" by experienced wargamers. So players who choose to play Standard Game scenarios can have a relatively quick game when that's what suits them. The real flavor of a war in the theatre, though, comes through in the Advanced Game, where you get much more control over airpower and can more clearly see each side's strengths and weaknesses. For players who want a "mini-monster game" experience, playing the Advanced Game Campaign Scenarios with some or all of the optional rules will definitely "deliver."

So our hope is that we have created a game with enough variety and scaling of complexity that you can find an engaging and maybe even enlightening experience whether you want to play a fast two-player game, a longer monster game, or an ongoing solitaire study. We intend to provide tools for online game play as well (a Vassal module is being created now for use during playtesting) so that this game can be played in either real-time or over longer periods on the internet.

Game Information: The Prussian Army is a Coalition expansion for Commands & Colors Napoleonics.

During the Seven Years’ War, small Prussia under Frederick the Great defeated the armies of Austria, Russia, and France to increase the size of its territories two fold and become a major power in Europe. But in spite of Prussia’s reputation as a formidable fighting nation, Prussia withdrew from the First Coalition as an active opponent of the French Revolution and remain on the sidelines until the Fourth Coalition in 1806.

Game Information: The Panzers Roll....

The tanks prepare for action. The fuel tanks topped off and the ammo loaded. The commanders confer one final time to review the battle plan. They await your orders.

As the fog clears, your beleaguered battle group once again moves into position to cover the retreating infantry. It is their only possible escape route. Failure is not an option – it never is. Your ranks have thinned since your first days on the Eastern Front. Those once halcyon times have now come and gone. The objective is simple. It is just a matter of holding the line until the reinforcements arrive.

The sharp report of a tank gun to your right quickly focuses your attention back to the situation at hand. The enemy is quickly advancing. You order the flank element to engage, all the while keeping a sharp eye peeled to the left thinking this is just another diversionary feint.

Again, your suspicions are correct. Their main force just broke over the rise on your left. You order the main body forward. The engines rumble, the guns crack and explosions erupt. Your forces will once more carry the day!

Game Information: The Austrian Army is a Coalition expansion for Commands & Colors Napoleonics.

Prior to the Napoleon wars, the Austrian Empire stretched from Italy to the Netherlands and from Poland to the Balkans. Its position in the center of Europe, however, made it the perfect target for revolutionary France and in April 1792, France declared war on Austria. The first war lasted for 5 years. Austria renewed the war against France in 1799 and again in 1805, but in both cases was swiftly defeated. In April 1809, judging that Napoleon’s army was bogged down with the fighting in Spain, Austria invaded Bavaria, but Napoleon recovered quickly and Austria’s defeat at Wagram led to another humiliating peace treaty. In 1812 Austria was forced to provide troops for Napoleon’sthe disastrous Russian campaign, but in 1813 Austria again joined the coalition against him.

The complexity level for this seems a little high. Was CC:N base game rated similar? I found it fairly accessible, and would rate it perhaps 3 (low).

Game Information: Colombia in the 1990s hosted one of the world’s last Marxist guerrilla armies, brutal drug lords, and right-wing death squads and appeared close to failing as a state. A decade later, its Marxists had lost their top leaders and rural sanctuary, its big drug bosses were dead or in prison, and its paramilitaries were negotiating demobilization. The Government had extended its writ to most of the countryside, restored its popularity, and improved the economy and respect for human rights.

Andean Abyss takes 1 to 4 players into this multifaceted campaign for control of Colombia: guerrillas and police, kidnapping and drug war, military sweeps and terror. Each of four factions deploys distinct capabilities and tactics to influence Colombian affairs and achieve differing goals. Players place and maneuver 160 wooden pieces across a colorful map and exploit event cards that cannot be fully predicted. Accessible mechanics and components put the emphasis on game play, but Andean Abyss also provides an engrossing model of insurgency and counterinsurgency in Colombia—smoothly accounting for population control, lines of communication, terrain, intelligence, foreign aid, sanctuaries, and a host of other political, military, and economic factors.

The Big News for Andean Abyss this month is that it is in art and has a spot in the production queue -- delivery in 3rd Quarter of this year. With luck, it will be out for the World Boardgaming Championships in Lancaster, where it had some great playtest action last year.

The playtest files are all complete -- including a plump background Playbook with a fabulous Toppen Tutorial. GMT's Mark Simonitch has the gameboard and deck files and is already talking to the map artist.

Preorder Price (List Price): $45 ($65)

Number of Players: 2-5

Comments: One more step forward.

Game Link: http://gmtgames.com/p-278-the-supreme-commander.aspx

Game Information: The Supreme Commander is a game designed for 2-5 players covering the entirety of World War II in the European Theater of Operations (ETO), from September 1939 to the end of the war. While there are plenty of other ETO games out there, The Supreme Commander effectively models all of the primary aspects of the war in a simple, straight-forward manner.

Murmansk convoy, Lend-Lease, diplomacy, the strategic U-Boat campaign, technological advancement, strategic bombing campaigns, naval invasions, the economy and military production, partisans – All of these elements and more are included in a surprisingly easy-to-learn game.

Note: We are doing much of the final system and balance testing of this game online using a (beautiful) Vassal module. We are definitely interested in additional testers who are new to the game at this stage. If you are interested in helping out, please contact developer Paul Marjoram at pmarjora@gmail.com.

Components:
* Rulebook
* (2) 24x36 maps with large hex pattern (one map is back-printed with a standard size 5/8" hex version so you can play the whole game on one map - for you guys with limited table space)
* Diplomatic Track (cardstock)
* Player aid card
* 560 Counters (Corps and Army-sized units)
* 6 x Force Pool cards for France, UK, US, USSR, Italy, Germany

Game Information: The Bohemian Revolt of 1618 triggered the Thirty Years War and in the early period of the war the Catholic/Imperial cause enjoyed an almost unbroken string of victories. This game, part of the Musket and Pike Battle Series, simulates six battles of the early Thirty Years War. In the period covered, the armies deployed in more compact formations so each battle fits on half of a standard map.

The battles covered in this game are: White Mountain, November 1620; Wimpfen, May 1622; Höchst, June 1622; Fleurus, August 1622; Stadtlohn,
August 1623; Lutter am Barenberg, August 1626.

In addition to scenario specific special rules that highlight the unique events of each battle, the battles in the game all share a simple set of special rules. These rules show the peculiarities of the early years of the Thirty Years War, such as Croat/Transylvanian style light cavalry.

I've had all the games in this series for a while, but like many others did not get a chance to actually break them out and play them (with the exception of TACW).

Recently, I've taken some time to play through these games, and they are incredibly entertaining. I can't wait for this new installment to make it's way to my doorstep!

Preorder Price (List Price): $28 ($40)

Comments: Consim Press/GMT partnership. That whooshing sound is this game racing up the depth chart.

Game Link: http://www.gmtgames.com/p-374-the-hunters.aspx

Game Information: The Hunters is a solitaire tactical level game placing you in command of a German U-boat during WWII. Your mission is to destroy as much Allied Shipping and as many Capital ships as possible while advancing your crew quality and increasing your commander rank culminating in special decoration ‒ all while remembering you have to make it home.

The Hunters is purposely designed to deliver a brisk yet intensive gaming experience that forces many decisions upon you as you will take command among the major German U-boat models in service during WWII, and try to complete an entire tour. If you ultimately survive all patrols from 1939 to 1943, you will be transferred to the U-boat Training Command for the remainder of the war, having successfully carried out your service for the Fatherland.

Those familiar with the classic Avalon Hill game title, B-17: Queen of the Skies, will come to enjoy the same type of gaming experience of the German U-boat War. All major U-boat models are accounted for with every level of detail including period of service, armaments, crew make-up, damage capacity, and more.

Current Preorders: 737 (+296)

First announced: November 2011

Current Status: Made the Cut NEW!!

Preorder Price (List Price): $40 ($59)

Number of Players: 1-4

Comments: Last month I said I was willing to bet a lot of bag that it would make the cut. Then GMT announced it was going to include thicker reprint counters in the expansion for everyone so those who bought the first edition of Space Empires. Then they added that those who bought them already could get a refund and keep the thicker counters to boot.

Full details here at the GMT web site.

GMT. Best game company. Hands down.

Game Link: http://www.gmtgames.com/p-376-space-empires-close-encounters...

Game Information: Space Empires: Close Encounters is the first expansion to Space Empires: 4X. Alien races meet up close as they encounter each other for the first time in ship boarding engagements and planetary invasions with different types of ground troops. The strengths and weaknesses of each alien empire are brought out with roughly 20 unique racial abilities. The expansion takes advantage of the streamlined nature of the game system to add more technology and cool sci-fi things in very simple ways. While it is designed to be used as a whole, the expansion is modular and players can choose to use only the parts that they like.

Also included in the expansion is an experience system so that your ship groups become more proficient over time. There is a big benefit if you can keep ships alive! The game gives more counters of each ship type to accommodate groups at different experience levels. Military academies in your empire can give your new groups a head start in accumulating experience.

Things are proceeding nicely on finishing things up from where Andy and Stephen left off. Counters have already been sent to the printers and map + labels are essentially finalized. Just working on the Card graphics and tightening up the rulebooks to try to make sure the game "reads well" (no major rule changes are expected at this point).

Hopefully we'll get you some finalized artwork out shortly so you can see the fantastic job Knut and Charlie have done on the map + counters/cards/etc.

The color of the dice is only one of two indicators. We included the number of pips so colorblind people can refer to the pips vs. color (red = 4 pips on all graphics; green = 5 pips on all graphics; and blue = 6 pips on all graphics). Realize its not "the best" for red-green color blind, but should be sufficiently different that hopefully it won't present a game-play issue.

Likely a typo.

Both vignettes and the combat example on GMT's site show blue=5 and green=6.

Game Information: 40,000 B.C. — A great ice age is ending. Another titanic struggle for global supremacy has unwittingly commenced between the animal species.
Dominant Species: The Card Game is a fast-playing game that abstractly recreates a tiny portion of ancient history: the ponderous rescinding of an ice age and what that entails for the living creatures trying to adapt to the slowly-changing earth.

Players will use six major animal classes – mammal, reptile, bird, amphibian, arachnid or insect – to further their goals in various terrain. Through wily card play, players will strive to become dominant at as many different terrestrial and sea biomes as possible in order to claim valuable victory points: It is survival of the fittest.

All of this leads to the end game – the final descent of the ice age – where the player having accumulated the most victory points wins the game.

But somebody better become dominant quickly, because it’s getting mighty warm...

Armies maneuver on a point to point map of Southern Germany based on the road network available at the time. Each game is centered around a major battle or full campaign season. A Turn is a month divided into a variable number of impulses. Each army has a hand of Campaign Cards that control the amount of activity it may perform, the supplies it must expend, and a special action. Each impulse features one card play per army. Forces are concealed off map so players are faced with limited knowledge of the enemy. The major activities are maneuver, foraging, besieging fortifications, and an occasional battle. GCo30YW is a low-complexity game with emphasis on the players maneuvering their forces, but many decisions await. The low rules complexity allows each player, rather than being encumbered with rules, to focus on choices regarding how to manage his campaign.

Mike,

I was away for half of 2010 and got a little behind on the scenarios. The maps & counters are out to print though. It won't be too long now.

This is actually Twilight Struggle's graphic, but since 1989 is based on TS, this is a handy placeholder

Game Information:
1989 is an exciting, fast paced game simulating the end of the Cold War in 1989. During this amazing year, a series of democratic revolutions ended the 40 year Soviet empire in Eastern Europe. 1989 simulates the political, social and economic aspects of these revolutions using a card driven system similar to Twilight Struggle.

Components:

1 countersheet
1 22" x 34" map
1 rulebook (approx 24 pages)
2 player aid cards
2 strategy decks (110 cards)
1 Power struggle deck (55 cards)

Comments: I'm still positively giddy at the prospect of getting this and 1989 next month.

I don't have enough superlatives to speak about my excitement over the announcement of this game. I knew it was in development, but that it's finally going to see light of day is simply outstanding to me. Based on what I've read of the game so far, I might even like this one more than Here I Stand, which is a game I simply love.

Of course, this game is another one of those which has a very long playing time. Notwithstanding this however, it's on my personal P500 list. There are some games that one simply must have, and this is a must for me.

Game Link: http://www.gmtgames.com/p-341-virgin-queen.aspx

Game Information: Virgin Queen: Wars of Religion 1559-1598 is a game of grand strategy for two to six players based on the military, political and religious conflicts within Europe during the reigns of Elizabeth I of England and Philip II of Spain. Each player controls one or more of the major powers that presided over European politics in that day. Spain is the juggernaut, able to draw upon the vast riches of their global empire. But such a dominant power is sure to have many enemies. The Ottoman expansion towards Spain’s Mediterranean outposts remains unchecked. Elizabeth’s English sea dogs are poised to raid Spain’s overseas empire. And the forces of Protestant reform will soon drag Spain into eighty years of rebellion in the Netherlands. Will Spain find aid from its Catholic allies? Perhaps not from France, where the Catholic Valois dynasty is soon to engage another group of Protestant believers in the bloody French Wars of Religion. And even Philip’s relatives in Vienna who rule the Holy Roman Empire may dabble in the Protestant faith instead of remaining loyal to their Catholic heritage and Spanish brethren.

*sigh*

I came into this thread just to see some comments on each of the big P500 games at the moment. I'm now leaving it while thinking about ordering roughly 5 of the games here, most strongly of all this one. Why must it print so sooooooon?
(Yes, I know the rest of you adore this, but having recently picked up Antiquity, my wallet already weeps and I could do without large purchases for a short while)

[4 hour later edit]
Embraced my usual philosophy of 'screw it, I only live once'. Ordered.

I've tried pitching Here I Stand to my friends/gaming group and so far they kind of roll their eyes. However, being ren faire geeks, mentioning Virgin Queen perks their interests. Mine too I confess. I'm tight on money but yes, it's preordered.

Out of curiosity, I had a look at the Excel spreadsheet where I keep my P500 data for the monthly lists since I took it over in June of 2009.

Not only has the output from GMT increased over the years, the number of games on the P500 has increased commensurately.

Just a note on the reprints. Personally I don't see a need to track them monthly. That's a lot of extra work, and I think that the benefit for most games is negligible. On one hand everyone wants a weekly update on when the next reprint of [insert hot game here] is going to be, but for the most part games like Barbarossa Army Group North, 1941 are going to take a long time to work their way to the front of the queue, and I just want to be able to see the forward progress.

additionally, keeping them in a separate list will not dilute the essential nature of this list. With a reprint, I'm mostly interested in what kind of progress is it making, and when it is scheduled to be out. With your current list there are all sorts of questions to, and progress reports from designers and developers. If there's substantial redesign work in a reprint it probably belongs here, but I'd rather see this list stay focused and concentrated rather than diluted. As long as there's a link to the other list, I've got enough energy to click on it.
