The BoardGamers of Michiana met for a game day on Friday the 13th.

We parked in an unplowed parking lot and braved the slippery steps venture into our basement of gaming!

In attendance were:
David H.
Jacque H.
Curt B.
Josh H.
Sam W.
Chris C.
Paul ?
Clint H.
Ryan H.

We ate played games and ate pizza and drank mochas and played more games. We were playing games until a little after 1:00 AM -- loads of fun!

Overall I had a really good time, and I really appreciate everyone coming!

What a fantastic game. Risk games that take less than 2 hours, and a changeable world where effects are permanent for all future games. Write on the board, apply permanent stickers, and change the board forever.

In this game, Chris played Saharan Republic -- a mobile and fluid force whose strength is in tactical maneuvering:

Jacque played Enclave of the Bears -- a bold and fierce clan whose advantage is in the offensive:

David was the Khan Industries -- a mechanized force whose can manufacture extra units in home bases:

Clint played Imperial Balkania -- a proud nation whose strength relies in controlling large swaths of land:

Paul played Die Mechaniker -- a strong race whose strength is in defense of their home base:

This was our 3rd game on Chris's set -- so far there has been a strong focus on Australia -- boosting cards, a fortified city, and reducing the continent bonus from 2 down to 1.

David chose to start in Australia, Jacque chose Africa, Paul chose South America. That left me to pick between North America, Asia, and Europe. I chose to start in Greenland -- sortof a mix between Europe and North America, and Chris was left to find a place in Asia to call home.

Jacque and Paul made an early alliance that gave Paul control of South America (2 bonus armies) and gave Jacque control of Africa (3 bonus armies). David was able to expand into all of Australia fairly quickly, but due to 2 cities being there, it left him with two fewer troops than he would have had otherwise. Chris made a VERY bold (but fantastic to watch) early move to rush David from his position in Siberia. He fought a land war in Asia and marched all the way south to meet David in Australia. This spread Chris incredibly thin, and all of David's (already less-numerous) forces were spent in trying to defend against the onslaught. David struck back, but ultimately was crushed by Chris, who rolled through and conquered Australia -- though at great cost.

David was "knocked out", and was able to respawn in his next turn -- he chose to start in northeast Asia, and quickly filled up 3 or 4 regions with his small pack of soldiers.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the globe, Paul and Jacque still had a truce. Paul marched northwards through Central America and laid waste to my cities in North America. I was forced to consolidate to try and retain some territories, but it left me cramped and unable to use my faction's ability.

Jacque expanded to strengthen her African borders (though still only left 2 troops on the border with South America) and marched through Asia to take on Chris from the north -- even as he was fighting David in the south. Chris was caught in a pincer, and though he retreated to Australia, Jacque's Enclave of the Bear had the crushing weight of sheer numbers behind it.

David meanwhile had regrouped enough to capture Chris's base from him (so that his faction bonus took effect) -- so David held Chris's capital in north Asia, while Chris held David's capital in Australia.

Paul finally realized how big of an advantage he had been giving Jacque and decided to attack her -- but split his forces between attacking me and attacking Jacque, and it just wasn't enough. Jacque turned in cards for a large number of troops, then marched to capture Chris's capital in northern Asia, then marched down to Australia to take David's capital away from Chris (who was currently in possession of it).

And with that, victory was given to the Enclave of the Bears, and Jacque signed the board for the first time!

I don't know anything about this game, other than it kept them relatively busy for about two hours.

While Paul, Curt and Chris played Merchants of the Middle Ages, the rest of the group (David, Jacque, Clint, Josh, Sam) decided to play a game of The Resistance. David and Clint were the only two who had remembered playing before -- the rest were new.

David started out by picking Clint for the first mission -- this vote succeeded, and the mission passed. Leadership passed to Sam, and he put himself plus the previous two (David and Clint) on the mission as well. This also was voted through, and the mission had all success cards. 2 to 0, Resistance, w00!

Josh was the next leader, and he elected to put himself and David on the next mission. I don't think this was voted through. Leadership passed to me, and I put Sam and myself on a mission. This was voted through, and when the mission cards turned up, there was a fail card in the mix. Oh no!!! So this narrowed things down to (at least) one spy in the mix of Sam and Clint.

Let the paranoia begin! Jacque was the next leader and didn't know who to trust -- I don't remember who wound up choosing the next mission -- I think Jacque's proposal was voted down, along with David's, then I think either Sam's was voted down as well, and Josh's proposal of himself, Clint and Jacque finally passed through the group. This mission had a single fail card in it, and the score was now tied at 2-2. It was down to the final mission!

At this point, Clint decided to just trust David. "If you're a spy, you're doing a really good job, and deserve to win." -- and with that, David and Clint formed a mutual trust pact. That meant that both David and Clint firmly (and publicly) believed that Sam was the spy -- the only other question at that point was whether Josh or Jacque was the other spy. Clint went back and forth in his mind several times, but some (perhaps imagined) odd associations (and avoidances) that Josh and Sam had gave him a weird feelings, and he felt like he'd rather gamble on Jacque being Team Blue.

Clint proposed David, Jacque, and himself for the final mission, and it was voted through. The mission cards were turned in, shuffled, and turned up...

Spoiler (click to reveal)
...and it passed! GO TEAM BLUE!!!

Crazy good game -- the spies played a very good game and brought it down to the wire. Very well played. Like all good Resistance games -- we spent more time talking about it afterwards than we did playing it.

Players:
David - won
Jacque - won
Clint - won
Josh - lost
Sam - lost

Merchants of the Middle Ages was still going on, so the group who played Resistance decided to start up another game that could handle 5 players. Josh suggested Cosmic Encounter, and since I recently acquired a copy of this, I was interested in learning it.

Cosmic Encounter is a game where you are the leader of an alien race, and you are attempting to colonize as many planets as you can -- through a mixture of diplomacy and force. Each race has asymmetric abilities and powers that give a crazy variety of flavor to the game.

Players take turns in a circle picking a target to attack, and then other players may join in on those battles -- either by joining the attacker, or by joining the defender. The losing party loses all of the ships that they committed to the battle (the max of which is 4), while the winning party gets rewarded. If they are helping the attacker, then they get to colonize the planet alongside the attacker. If they are defending, then are rewarded with cards that give you more flexibility and power.

Players:
David (Hacker): 4 pts
Jacque (Remora): 3 pts
Clint (Graviton): 2 pts
Josh (Smasher): 5 pts (shared victory)
Sam (Sorcerer): 5 pts (shared victory)

Cosmic Encounter took longer to play than we expected, and Merchants of the Middle Ages finished while that game was in process. So Chris left after that game, but Curt and Paul stuck around to get in some more gaming.

Red Dragon Inn is a game where you play the standard adventuring party (bard, rogue, wizard, etc) -- but instead of questing and whatnot, this game takes place after the adventure is over, and you're just hanging out at the inn, drinking and gambling and generally causing trouble for yourself. Your goal for the evening is to be the last of your party left in the bar. Every player has a hand of cards, a stack of gold, a stamina value, and an alcohol value. If you ever run out of gold, then the barkeep throws you out since you can't pay for any more of your drinks. However, if your alcohol content ever reaches your stamina, then you pass out and are kicked out of the bar that way.

So your goal is to not only stay rich and sober, but to get your friends drunk and to take all of their money in gambling.

Lots of 'take that!' sort of fun with a great theme.

Players:
David - Won
Curt - (2nd) - drunk
Josh - (3rd) - drunk
Jacque - (4th) - drunk

Paul was going to head out, but agreed to stay and play a game of Flash Point: Fire Rescue -- a game we'd all played for the first time only a couple of weeks previous at the December 30th game day.

So Sam, Clint and Paul sat down to play. I'd love to type more details, but I'm falling asleep right now. Basically it was an epic win -- everyone did a stellar job of really maximizing their abilities.

Players:
Clint - Driver/Operator
Sam - Captain
Paul - Hazmat + Paramedic

My memory's so fuzzy -- Paul, did we actually play two games here? I feel like someone was CAFS when we played yesterday, but I could be wrong.
