Below is my Top 10 list of games covering one of the most simulated battles of the American Civil War--Gettysburg. These are games that meet substantially all of the following criteria: (1) focuses on battle of Gettysburg; (2) a wargame that focuses on one, two, or all the days of the battle of Gettysburg (or include the lead-up to or aftermath); (3) addresses the "theme" in an interesting or compelling manner that leaves the player with a better understanding of Gettysburg (and its various aspects); and (4) fun to play (understanding that this can be very subjective, especially for wargames). This is a list of the BEST! As always, your mileage may vary and some entries may be "controversial." As such, please feel free to comment, debate, or just express your own point of view. Feel free to thumbsup this list (to draw attention and more comments) or any pleasing, interesting or thought provoking entries. If I missed one that you feel is essential or I am "insane for not listing" (trust me, it has been said before), then by all means let the comments fly . . . just be civil. FYI - I am a sucker for comments and discussion and usually thumbsup most if not all of them.

I find that these lists sometimes are helpful for others seeking similar games and the more rich the discussion for more useful the list.

For a complete listing of my Top 10 lists, see--MetaList: Nap's Top 10 Lists.

As always, thanks for reading and participating!

There is in my opinion no game ever made that simulates the battle of Gettysburg better than this.

Great series with great production values!! It is about simulating all the campaigns of the American Civil War (ACW) at operational level. The series has a beautiful and natural flowing game system with the right balance between playability and realism. The rulebook is so informative and well written that every game mechanics is so logically explained that you hardly have to memorise them. The rulebook alone worth the whole game price. A day by day historical account and insightful analysis of the campaign with hex numbers of the key battle location and cities/ towns is included. Not even to mention the extraordinary historical game maps, useful summary of tables in the player aid cards, portrait of every major leaders participating in the campaign, lots of scenarios etc. Key features include: variable movement of battle force, leader initiatives, morale, force march, train movement, breastworks and fortifications, hidden force strength, logging of ammunition level, flank attack, supply and foraging, etc. Plus, all the game maps in the series can be joined to recreate virtually the entire conflict in the eastern theatre!! The best game series about the ACW so far in the history of wargame. Plus, Road to Gettysburg is the campaign about the greatest battle of the entire American Civil War. How can you miss? Hats off to the veteran wargame designer Joseph Bolkoski!!

I've played alot of Civil War games; this is by far the best balance of detail and "game" of the Gettysburg battles. Full game takes SOME time to complete, but the results are worth it.

If I had to choose one Gettysburg battle game this would be it.Why? Simple, good simulation, fun to play, few pieces and rules.Yes contrary to some, the blocks add a great deal of uncertainty, especiallyconsidering command limitations and supply exhaustion. Union playerneeds to be careful on day one as reinforcements don't have to enter the exact entry road. Rules allow enough wiggle room here to allow reinforcements to suddenly appear on adjacent entry roads. This helpseliminate the gamey feel found in many other Gettysburg battle games.

Best game on the battle, bar none. The game has no objective hexes, you play the game to break the morale of the enemy. The terrain features that usually end up as objectives in other games get used because of their natural defensive advantages, not because a scenario has told you they are worth something. The add-on "Devils To Pay" is well done also. I actually got to run around the battlefield with the games designer, Rick Barber. We took his maps along and he showed me why he made various decisions when designing it. A memorable day that taught me a lot about the battle (and making wargames.)

What AH's Gettysburg '77 should have been. Best morale and combat rules in a game this size. Is only eclipsed by Yaquinto's Waterloo game, "Thin Red Line." If you can find a copy, buy it!

A game that succeeds brilliantly at what it is trying to achieve - a simple Gettysburg game that can be played to completion in an afternoon, a challenge for both sides to play and is historical enough for most people to enjoy. It is NOT the last word in historical simulations, nor is it trying to be. If you judge it by that standard, you are simply being unfair and ignoring the intent of the design. Craig Taylor is a wargame design genius.
