I have been a game board geek now for almost a decade now and I have played with the same gaming group during that entire time period. After awhile the people in this group have come to know each other so well that many un-written rules and social understanding have begun to develop. I believe that many of these rules are universal so I wish to share these nuggets of wisdom and hope to receive some in return please feel free to add.

There are two kinds of game players: those who understand that making that devestating attack on the rather emotional fellow across the table may be the best statistical and tactical move, it is not necessarily the best move in order to win the game, and those who don't.

If there is some game you reeeeally would like to play with your game group, you can rest assured that you will turn out to *just* too many to play it.

And whenever someone breaks up to call it a day, and the rest would like another game before they take off too, its too late to start up on some new and perhaps complex game.

I can't recall how many times we had to postpone playing Puerto Rico before it actually hit the table.

The final game always takes more time than a married person has. The end game expands and time contracts to meet inexorably at precisely twenty minutes past the time when you’d promised you’d be home.

My favorite copied from my previous "rules" geeklist.

If you argue that a rule is 'broken' and that a House Rule should be made, the arguments you get in response will inexorably fall into one of only three categories:

1)But it's a rule!
2)The rules say: [reads exact wording directly from rulebook]
-or-
3)That goes along with what it says here [reads the example from the rulebook intended to demonstrate the broken rule]

None of which is to the point.

Game length is directly proportional to how much the person asking you to play likes the game.

If a person really likes a 7 hour game, he'll tell you it takes 4.

7 hours later he'll tell you "It usually doesn't take this long."

When a person wants to "jump into" a game just to kill time, knowing full well they will not have time to finish it, and clearly telling everyone that they won't finish. A true gamer would not do this as they hate to have that player ;eave and someone has to play a dead hand and try not to help themselves. The gall to ask to do this is beyond me, but I guess it comes from not being dedicated to the strategy, and someone just trying to do "anything" while they wait for their ride. They don't know how it sucks after they leave if left in a good or bad position, it just screws it up for everyone.

When playing a game with multiple people, the number of interpretations for a vaguely written rule can be determined by counting the number of players and dividing by one.

Our rule has to do with the annoying habit of dice to sometime land at an acute angle. If they did not land flat, and they did not land with the side you wanted facing up, you could argue that the roll was invalid requiring you to reroll the offending die. In our circles, this is known as a "Wilson". Any player can call a Wilson and if the majority of the table agrees it is a Wilson, then that die is rerolled. This was named after a D&D player who would argue vehemently that his rolls should be redone as it is clear that the rules intended dice to be rolled on flat surfaces so that no question could be called into their results. We eventually just gave in and created the house rule in his (dis)honor.

The best part is, about a year or two later we were at a convention in New Hampshire (we are in CT) and heard the rule invoked at a table across the way from us. We did not know anyone at that table!surprise

Whenever you play a game with your children - Even if it doesn't suit them best - they try to kill their dad. Even if they are playing with uncles, friends or even each other.

I have seen this happen when daughters are involved too, so this does happen with women

If he lost the game, it was just a question of bad luck.

The person who always steps up to offer hints on strategy to another player, ALWAYS does so when it is to their advantage.

Which usually includes:
The first example of strategy is to show why a move against the person that is closest to them in score is the most reasonable move.

Any monies paid for luxury tax or paid to get out of jail always goes into the middle of the board. Then whoever lands on Free Parking next gets that money.
In our family it was also a rule that my little brother always got to be the banker and he was always allowed to steal a little from the bank. I still don't understand why he isn't working for a bank today since he would be a natural.

...or any game that has a "programmed" approach to teaching the rules or basic game -> advanced game progressions. Invariably, while explaining the very basic concepts of the game (step one or two) to a new player or group of players, a third party will chip in with information relating to step 85, thereby confusing the hell out of the newbies.
