So I want to have a wargame and I have been reading and reading about them but can't seem to spot the right one. Let me help you to help me: I like Memoir 44 a lot but I want something deeper. I played MMP's free offer Target Arnhem and love it. And that is exactly the kind of a game that I would like to get (Target Arnhem is just a small promo, so I need more).

So my ideas for a game would be:
- played in 0-4 hours
- WW2
- 2 (or more players)
- units that are something real like Panzer IV(not just 'tanks' as in Memoir)
- not too much moral checks and stuff like that. Rather just moving and shooting, please
- emphasis more on replayability than in historical accuracy
- available

Actually the Target Arnhem's playing mechanism is quite perfect for me (us). If I would just find a bigger game that would use the similar mechanism...

If you can add something that fills the void I would really value the effort

Each counter is a platoon. The boards are geomorphic, so they can be rotated and put together in a number of ways to simulate different layouts. All the Panzer Grenadier games come with a *bunch* of scenarios.

The rules and some counters are available for download so that you can try them out:
http://www.avalanchepress.com/PlayPG.php

The rules are only 16 pages, which is pretty light for a wargame.

Well, it's not technically available yet, although you might be able to lay your hands on the original Japanese game (Struggle of Army Group Manstein). But I suspect that won't be easy in Finland, so you can preorder this from MMP.

Other than that, this is probably a game that fits your criteria; perhaps a step up from Target Arnhem (which I've not had the pleasure of playing), but not a big step. And the rules are being rewritten with new wargamers in mind. You just might have to wait a while, I'm afraid.

If you can't wait for Victory Lost (and you do know that MMP will not charge you for the game till they affix the postage to mail it you? No reason to not order the game now so we can all have it to play)...

Anyway, this is the game for you. I reviewed it back in 2002 (or so) and thought it was the best game published that year. Tense and completely addictive, you will not be able to stop playing it.

Careful to get the Decision Games version and not the older SPI version of the same name. You aren't ready for SPI development just yet.

The best! (imho)

While EF is much more complex than Target: Arnhem, the rules are clear and there aren't that much chrome. In practice it is a pretty simple game with very few exceptions. The rulebook seem long (about 30 pages) but the amount of actual rules is pretty sparse. Also it scales pretty well to from shorter 3 hour games (6 months) to longer campaings (a year, a year and a half, two years, the whole war). Also WF uses almost the same ruleset, so the Western Front is also easily covered.

Here is another, and less controversial, choice for you. It isn't as deep as the others I have mentioned but deeper than Target Arnhem - and on the very same topic.

It is long out of print so it would require a little eBay hunting but it is worth the effort...

You could just move up the ladder on Market Garden...lots of games on this. After this one, you could go to Hell's Highway or Operation Market Garden and, wait for it, the doctorate course with my game, Devil's Cauldron...

Eerikki, I agree with your take on Target: Arnhem. I think this would make a great next game for you -- the rules are quite easy and the original Avalon Hill editions are very inexpensive. Of course, if you can afford to do so I recommend L2's production of the game (the "fourth edition") - it's a little bigger in size, and has more scenarios, otherwise it's essentially the same game.

Also, listen to Adam about A Victory Lost

This one is deep and pretty easy to get into. The ATS system has several Basic Games that will let you start playing right away. It also has games on many different WWII actions ranging from Stalingrad to N. Africa to Normandy and Arnhem.

There are many scenarios ranging from ones that take 30 minutes to to ones that take several hours.

An excellent choice for someone looking to get into tactical WWII warfare.

Ok, forget what I just said and try this one from MMP. This is Market Garden and it's an area impulse game, quicker than BKN, fun and interesting. However, it does play a bit linear after you've played it several times- more so than BKN.

No one else mentioned it so I will. This game is relatively easy. This game gives you six scenarios playable in a short evening (some you can play twice). Its tense. It gives a lot of historical flavor (you want individual tanks wait for ASL Starter Kit #3, but then you can have your Tigers fighting Shermans or T-34's).

Best of all, there are people all over the world who play the game, I certainly know there are some in Finland somewhere as i've spoken to them. 8)

And, if that's not enough, there's an online version of the game allowing you and an opponent to play across the net, with voice software it's like being face to face while being in finland and well, anywhere!

Price is hard to beat, at $24 US.

But my opinion on this game is very biased.

Not sure if it exactly meets your criteria ... cause you don't actually move - but you definitely shoot!

Cards are played to change relative position on an opponent's airplane and then cards are played to shoot and counter manuever. Games move very quickly. I think the 4 or 6 player games can be the most fun!

IIRC, a similar card game for tank battles is being developed by GMT named "Brazen Chariots"

If you have not checked out this game, I beleive that it may meet your requirements, which appear to be in line with what my gaming group was looking for.

The game play as it comes out of the box is a step above Memoir 44 and with a few tweaks that we added, I believe makes the game even better. Tanks are not just tanks as in Memoir 44,. In the basic game they are broken down into light, medium, and heavy. I took them a step further and made cards that represented the different tanks giving them differents stats even though they may still be a medium tank, they may have better movement, better armour, better fire power, etc.

I also created cards for my Russian army so that it covers both the eastern as well as the western front.

I have a few photos of one of our games in progress and have posted the link below.
