I've listed what I think are the 25 best game box covers of 2011.

My criteria are completely subjective, but I'm primarily considering things like:

Beauty
Drama
Colors
Composition, balance, and placement of image(s)
Placement of text and logos, and choice of typeface
Success in representing the game's topic, setting, or feel
Success in reflecting the contents of the box
Success in making me interested in the game
Success in creating a distinctive and positive "brand" for the game

I'm evaluating only the box's top and (to a lesser extent) sides, not the back.

Please add your own favorites! Boxes from 2011 only, please.

This beautiful, moody, thematic cover is my favorite of the year. To me this one is flawless in every aspect. In fact, I like this box so much that I was sad to see it leave my collection even after losing interest in the game.

The Forgotten Planet cover is a pitch-perfect homage to the old pulp style of science fiction illustration. An almost flawless cover, with my only (extremely minor) criticism being that the color of the publisher's logo doesn't flatter the muted palette of the artwork.

A brilliant concept, brilliantly executed, even down to the subtle details like the logos and the typography. A masterpiece.

This is the first of several awesome nautically-themed covers from 2011. It was the year of the ship, I guess.

Click and enlarge the higher-res tilted-box image, below, to see this painterly box cover in all its majesty. The heroic beauty of the image does give me a weird conflicted feeling, though, since this is a game about killing native populations, trading slaves and generally exploiting every corner of the earth Still, a stunning box cover.

Top notch job by Hasbro on this one. The more I look at this image, the more I want to try this game. Clearly they put some thought into this, conveying their new gameplay concepts with little touches like the graffiti art and the ghostly soldiers from an earlier era fading into the white background.

The dark and dusty wine cellar conveys just the right sense of terroir and craft for this game about winemaking in Portugal's Douro Valley. Vintage Ports are some of the most expensive wines in the world, so this game deserves a classy-looking box cover. I especially like the stencil-painted lettering that shows the texture of the dark background bleeding through.

The extra-wide format of the box is part of what makes this one work so well. The dark blues and blacks of the background show just enough detail to place you in the stadium, but are subdued enough to keep the focus on the movement and bright colors in the foreground.

This grim but compelling cover puts you right in the trenches with the infantry. The mood is dirty, smoky, and foreboding, and looking at it makes me feel nervous and vulnerable. We don't see the machine guns but we know they're out there, somewhere off frame. The composition of the image focuses our attention on the two brave soldiers rising out of the trench.

I love how the crazy-looking, disheveled Friday is blithely wandering into danger with such a goofy, congenial expression on his face. I don't think I would like the cover if it came on a big box. This game is now sporting a brand new box in its second edition, and both the new and the old (to the left) covers look great. The old one had a little more personality, but the new one has more of an epic, opulent feel. The new one also looks more like the HBO TV series, which probably makes it more marketable for Fantasy Flight.

Honestly, this cover doesn't appeal to me. But that's because I have absolutely no interest in the "epic space conquest" setting. Star Wars was great when I was a kid, but overall, I've just never been a fan of the genre. Setting aside my biases, I think the Eclipse cover is very effective in presenting the game's theme. Almost anyone who is interested in this style of game would be intrigued by this box cover.
