These are games that just go totally over the top in terms of production. By overproduced I mean that the game just blows you away when you open the box. For fun, add the one element that really pushes the game over the top (the most excessive, maybe useless, but still cool bit).

A "miniatures" game where the "minis" are about 120mm tall for the shortest piece. Each customizable with weapons and armor that clips on and you can swap in prts and gear from other units for more customizability. Even the darn dice are modular! And as you deal damage you pull off your opponents limbs and bits!

I'm astounded. Over 120 entries and no mention of this? The overproduction is the game. It's a fairly simple roll the dice and move affair, but it came in a massive box to contain the giant 3D molded plastic board. Essentially the game is just an excuse for something to do with the (awesome) bits. Tiki idol, plastic gems, bridges, fireball marbles... this is the king of overproduction for the sake of overproduction.

True. Thing is, it was very reasonably priced when it came out. Now it's hard to find a complete one on eBay for under $100.

Disagree. Form and function are perfect on this one.

I think of overproduced as meaning chrome for chromes sake. Every piece of this game (with the possible exception of the idol since you could just roll the marbles without it) serves a purpose.

Space Hulk? sure. Any 60's game made by Ideal? OK. Fireball Island? No way.

I don't agree.

Fireball Island could have been made on a flat surface, with simple indicators for where the fireball roll when they are launched.

There is no real need at all to have them "roll" down a path to knock down the player's plastic figures. There's no real need to have a 3D board in the first place, and a plastic bridge and Idol.

It is/was overproduction at it's best.

Hold on a minute. I remember getting this game as a child. It was awesome. Also, I remember why you couldn't play this game on a "flat surface." The whole point of the game was to roll the fireball marbles.

It made total sense to setup the game this way. It truly was the first of its kind, with many different variations along the way.

Can you imagine any other board game in 3D? Monopoly? Chutes and Ladders? Wouldn't that just blow your mind? True, many board games have 3D elements (and I'm not talking about HeroScape or Hero Quest), but this game has a board that is 3D, and your players walk around on it. It wouldn't look the same as a 2D board like Monopoly. It would just look stupid. This may be overproduced, but if you look on eBay, there are copies that are "barely used" for $200+, and many copies that are used and incomplete that go for $50+. What other board game can claim that? Hell, I picked up Battle Masters (which is overproduced) for around $10 each (I have two copies).

This one didn't really have all that many components, actually. However, pencil, paper, and a standard deck of cards with A-5 removed from each suit (plus one Joker) would suffice for the actual mechanics of the game. The oversized custom cards, the cloth bag to keep them in, and the molded plastic "gems" that were used to keep score mark it as overproduced. The one truly critical piece of equipment in the box was the rule book; presumably pretty much anybody can rustle up a deck of cards (and it doesn't even need to be a complete deck!). It's essentially a slightly modified version of Hearts with a facelift.

(In fairness: the custom cards do add a lot of ambiance; the Runesword variant where the goal is "don't take the Prince of Warriors" just feels better than "don't take the Jack of Spades", and there's no comparison between "avoid taking the Wizards" and "avoid the tens." The gems are definitely overproduction, but they stack in such a way you can build them into a sort of gem-encrusted wand, which you can then wave at the other players to show your total domination. And they happen to be the exact same pieces used in Fireball Island, listed just above.)

When I was packing up the game after the first play, I realized how overproduced St Pete is. To prove my point I put everything in a little box and took a photo:

Every little bit fits in perfectly.

Board - who needs a board for this game anyway? You just place the four different decks on top, and maintain 2 card rows. For keeping track of the score, just use an excel spreadsheet or a notepad.

The rules? The rulebook is a bit messy anyway, just use a player aid. There are plenty of files downloadable from this site.

St Pete's is "overproduced" because it has a board?

Well let's start with the scoring track. What do you propose? Pencil and paper?

Then there are the card places to help ensure that cards slide off properly and refill at the right time and help ensure that you have the right number each round. Without the board you'd be constantly counting up cards to work out how many to add, which is 20+ times in the average game.

The board parts(it consists of three parts) have rare bending edge, since they do not bend in the middle - and would be more stable - but bend at 1/4. I think this was done so the large picture of the box had its legitimation.

To have 17 prepainted minis is already good sign in order to belong on that list.
But the really overproduced part are the terrain tiles. In most games you need appr. 15 (or less) tiles, in the box are 30 and each of those things is 6 3/8 * 6 3/8 inch big (You can easily put all miniatures in the box on one tile). How are you supposed to shuffle these monsters ?

I'm the first to say that I love Descent, however it hasn't seen the table in almost 2 years because it is just such a chore to get it out, setup and played, and the time involved is just too much for my current gaming ability (I no longer have weekend gaming group meetings since I moved, I'm now gaming mostly in the evenings with my sons = less time).

So I just purchased this game to have something we can play in the time we have available now.

D-Rock....

Roughly, you can move as far as you like on your turn but at some stage you have to roll a die and then you turn the hand on the clock face which has some sort of gearing inside.

At some stage as you turn the vampyr's cape may fly open. If it does you stick you finger in his mouth and push the button at back which may lower a special tiny red-coloured two-nibbed felt-tip pen.

So cool I even took this to school and we'd play and put vampyr bites on ourselves even when not playing.

They didn't overproduce the glue though. His cape used to fall off routinely after a few games.

Huh? Who said you have to pay $900 for it?

Well worth every penny. I've already added many custom improvements and further upgraded many of the components. sauron

You could have done that with the base game and saved some money.

I couldn't have enlarged the board and cards and don't have the skill or time it would take to paint all the figures myself. Saving money wasn't the priority.

I am surprised no one ever added this one. This had 2 double-sided play boards, awesome miniatures, great adventures and a 33 minute VHS tape. This game is awesome. Just like Hero Quest, you can customize your own adventures and such. Great game, expecially if you want to get people interested in RPGs.

This is another one that should be added in. Not only do you get a 60 minute VHS tape that rocks, but you get the Death Star II set, 6 Jedi figures, 1 Stormtrooper and great gameplay. It seems a bit silly now, but back when this game hit the shelves, it was pretty fun. It is great to call Darth a "goober" and such when he asks for you on the tape. Try it out sometime.

The basic version of the game is fairly overproduced as it is, with 30+ miniature figures and four awesome robots, along with numerous dice, card board tiles, and terrain pieces.

The deluxe edition takes things to the far end of the overproduced category by taking all of those minis and hand-painting them--for a mere $200 over the $100 base game.

I thought the painting, while well done, was pretty much no different than if I had purchased the base game and then paid one of the many painting services to paint the 30 or so figures.

Cost would work out about the same in the long run.

So never saw the value of the collector set on this one.

I had this as a kid, after the second play I had bent the cardboard up so bad it didn't fit together right and I couldn't put it away.

I had to save up awhile to get it too. For the target audience I suspect they went a little overboard.

Ok so not too bad by today's standards but back then it was a pain for a six year old to set up and play.

I had this game. The figures were nice, the board was really hard to put together (if I recall correctly), and the game was only so-so.

I think this was more of a platform for play rather than for game. I seem to recall recreating daring battles more than once as if they were just figurines rather than parts of a game. It was fun to push the guards into the pit.

Quality of the miniatures are fabulous. This is just the base game and looks like it's primed for more expansions. Brought to you by the designer of Heroscape.

Squad Leader in all its forms just as to be the most over produced game ever. Lots and lots of expansions, loads of maps and counters for just about everything and its still my favourite conflict game of all time.

I know it's fairly new, but Planet Steam seriously needs to be on this list. The ore pieces are different shapes, but all still worth only one. The tanks are all solid wood, and when you first get it, they're all wrapped individually with foam wrapping.

It's a great game, but it needs to be on this list!
