These are games that just go totally over the top in terms of production. By overproduced I mean that the game just blows you away when you open the box. For fun, add the one element that really pushes the game over the top (the most excessive, maybe useless, but still cool bit).

This one had the guys at Fantasy Flight Games very impressed. When FF is impressed by the production that's saying something. The figures are amzingly detailed because of a new mixture they had cooked up and also if you step on them they spring right back. Everything is glossy and polished and looks right smart.

This bits are great and the quality is top notch BUT I have to say that the cards are the worst I have seen in a long time. How are you supposed to Shuffle a stack of credit cards. Some nice textured cards would have sufficed but if I remember right these were actually cheaper for the 1st time producer so I can't hold it too much against them.

It may be over produced, but since buying the game I feel it lacks content/value for money. In Australia i bought this game for maybe 85-90AUD, but Risk Godstorm, Arkham Horror, Fury of Dracula, all have more/better produced components for the same price.
Also not sure I like the photo artwork, feels slightly cheesy.. (paintings are more impressive IMHO).

But yes the game is good haha

Overproduced != bad game. LNoE is our most played game too. Just happens to be very highly produced.

Can say the same for Space Hulk and Tide of Iron.

Surely this one qualifies - the bits are easily half of the joy of the game (if you like the game) or the only redeeming thing about an abstract puzzle (if you don't). Even the "which way is forward" pieces are molded, and there's two different ones, depending on which phase of the game you are in.

Yeah, this has to be up there. You could play the game just as easily with nine wooden cubes for the sheep, or for the person who wanted to splurge: nine painted versions of the Agricola sheeps.

I just got this at a charity auction, and bought it solely for it's heft, thinking something that heavy had to be good (or at least have good bits). It wasn't until I got it home that I realized it's essentially monopoly with over 200 spaces, and a HUGE card to go with each. It also has 13 different denominations of money, from $1 million all the way up to $1 Trillion.

As I write this I am anxiously awaiting my copy via Thoughthammer. It should arrive today, I'm keeping a close watch on the Fedex Tracking status. This could be the undisputed Box of Toys King with a board that measures over 18 square feet, 500 larger than Axis & Allies scale minis. Huge price tag but I'm more than willing to pay it. Now, if only there could be a way to convice Pegasus Hobbies to release country specific sculpts for those of us willing to pay...

This one is overproduced. They wanted to make 1.000 games, but the minimum order for stag pieces would be 10.000. or 2.500 games
the game is overproduced to keep the cost relatively low
O wait. overproduced as in ...

Ah well the stag pieces and the board are fantastic.

I think this new game certainly qualifies as overproduced: topo-map style hills and valleys, moulded plastic hikers, trees, food, and gold, custom goods racks for each player.

I can't believe they're able to sell it for only $45 and still make a profit. Wonder how much it weighs?

I initially designed this game because us board game designers are a creative lot who like to innovate.

Sometimes after spending years playing the usual fold-in-two or fold-in-four game boards, or tiles, people tend to think about how else could a gaming environment be presented in a NEW way. At least that what I was thinking when I came up with the idea for Timber Tom.

Not only present the game in a new way, but also use it to compliment the theme.

If I had the choice to play a mountain/hiking theme-styled board game on a flat surface or on a topographic surface then I'd choose the topographic surface without a doubt. I just think that the gaming experience is far greater if the environment is coherent with the theme.

Regarding the plastic pieces, well that actually came down to technical issues. You see, the 10 mm spacing between peg holes means that I can only place quite small componants into these spaces (especially when the spaces are entirely taken up with either trees or hikers).

I studied many issues for these parts, and after seeing the technical problems of trying to wood-turn small conical trees, with a 6 mm flat base, and a 5 mm deep attached peg with rounded edges it became clear that my only way out was with plastic.

The same problem was present with the hiker.

Now when you make a plastic injection mold it costs a lot of money, so you like to make the most out the available space to try and get a reasonable return for the cost outlay - hence the idea to put the treasures and supply packs on the same mold.

During the game these items are stored in what I call "Player Trays" - 5mm dense foam with a 1.5mm card backing. These trays are just another innovation in the way game componants are stored by players during a game. Their color matches your hiker, and if ever you want to know which player is moving which hiker you just have to glance over at his player tray.

It also serves as a subliminal reminder to players themselves as to which piece they're playing. It hasn't happened to you that you move someone else's pawn bacause you thought it was yours? Well, the player tray is just another attempt to help innovate and make game play a little clearer.

And how can I sell it for 45$ and still make a profit? Because I do everything myself. I don't hire marketing, advertising or sales staff to globe trot my game around the planet. Its all done from 1 small 20m2 office in downtown Lyon.

I choose to sell it only on the internet. I don't sell it for price X to be doubled by distributor Y, then doubled by retailer Z.

(You should perhaps consider purchasing now! If ever it get gets into their hands it will probably retail for around double what I propose! cry

If you go to the official TT website (that I created and not 5 members of some Marketing department) you'll find all relevant details concerning the weight and dimensions.

If you've got any other questions or comments fire away! In any case I appreciate your feedback Matt.

Cheers for now!
Marco

C&C:A is a game that became overproduced due to the nature of its expansions.

The total number of wooden blocks in this game (including all expansions) is 1166 in seven different colors
The number is based on the data from the boxes and excludes all the spare blocks provided...

While I love the game, it would be just as well playable with two sufficiently big generic armies instead of six sets that differ only by color and graphics... and not only it would be more playable but also easier to store and transport...

I shudder at the though of next expansions that I'm going to buy anyway ^^.

Sculpted monkeys, SCULPTED MOUNTAIN, and the huge board that does not do anything at all except for having a hole in it where the mountain goes. The game itself is just selecting one of your cards and going as many steps as it says forward or backwards. This could be done on a normal flat straight board with spaces labeled 1 to 30 or something.

But why not make it on a montain with monkeys?

Absolutely.

The only thing more over-produced than the contents of this monster - most notably the coins - is the huge numbers of the game they produced in the first place.

Really, there are no excuses for not owning this lovely given the ease of purchase online and the fantastic price deals that are doing the rounds.

Great components, great game!

I think The Omega Virus is a good contender because it was quite an overproduced game for pre-teens back in the early '90s. The molds for the players and their probe robots are quite detailed. There are several weapons you must collect by traveling about the board and clipping them to your player's backpack. The access cards are thick cardboard and about the size of what real access cards should be. The two most important overproduced parts are the game board, which just fits on a dinner table due to its ridiculous triangular flaps. And of course there is the electronic Central Computer that gives you clues on where the Virus is hiding, making The Omega Virus sort of like a Electronic Dream Phone for boys. (Surprise, surprise, Omega Virus creator Michael Gray was also responsible for Dream Phone [and Shogun AND Fortress America. Whew!])

Another big coffin box from FFG, with some of their best miniatures packed inside.

This is a great game! You need to add the expansion BROOD WAR to make it even better than the core game. This then makes the game even MORE overproduced but who cares? My gaming group loves this game & we welcome the overproduction--hell, we encourage it!

I know many GW products have already hit the list, but it seems incomplete without this classic. Wish I'd never sold mine. cry

3rd Edition is ridiculous! Granted, it comes at a high premium.

Eagle really launced the Ton of Plastic arms race with this title. I've never played, but I've picked through a loaded box. Very impressive pieces and production, indeed. It's too bad Eagle did not survive, I felt they were a good addition to the Ameri-niche of gaming.

What? This is not already in this list? I mean, check out that… I don't even where to start. And did I even mention that the hats, staffs and familiars on the player pieces are detachable? This is surely one of the most over-produced standard versions of a board game and perhaps even the most overproduced in terms of the complexity of the components in relation to the non-existent gameplay.

The game with the unique grape-squashing-mechanism...
I loved this game as a kid. It was a lot of fun to squash the other players grapes

Squad Leader in all its forms just as to be the most over produced game ever. Lots and lots of expansions, loads of maps and counters for just about everything and its still my favourite conflict game of all time.

I know it's fairly new, but Planet Steam seriously needs to be on this list. The ore pieces are different shapes, but all still worth only one. The tanks are all solid wood, and when you first get it, they're all wrapped individually with foam wrapping.

It's a great game, but it needs to be on this list!
