The Most Overproduced Games Ever

These are games that just go totally over the top in terms of production. By overproduced I mean that the game just blows you away when you open the box. For fun, add the one element that really pushes the game over the top (the most excessive, maybe useless, but still cool bit).

This one had the guys at Fantasy Flight Games very impressed. When FF is impressed by the production that's saying something. The figures are amzingly detailed because of a new mixture they had cooked up and also if you step on them they spring right back. Everything is glossy and polished and looks right smart.

Surely this one qualifies - the bits are easily half of the joy of the game (if you like the game) or the only redeeming thing about an abstract puzzle (if you don't). Even the "which way is forward" pieces are molded, and there's two different ones, depending on which phase of the game you are in.

I just got this at a charity auction, and bought it solely for it's heft, thinking something that heavy had to be good (or at least have good bits). It wasn't until I got it home that I realized it's essentially monopoly with over 200 spaces, and a HUGE card to go with each. It also has 13 different denominations of money, from $1 million all the way up to $1 Trillion.

As I write this I am anxiously awaiting my copy via Thoughthammer. It should arrive today, I'm keeping a close watch on the Fedex Tracking status. This could be the undisputed Box of Toys King with a board that measures over 18 square feet, 500 larger than Axis & Allies scale minis. Huge price tag but I'm more than willing to pay it. Now, if only there could be a way to convice Pegasus Hobbies to release country specific sculpts for those of us willing to pay...

This one is overproduced. They wanted to make 1.000 games, but the minimum order for stag pieces would be 10.000. or 2.500 games
the game is overproduced to keep the cost relatively low O wait. overproduced as in ...
Ah well the stag pieces and the board are fantastic.

This one is over-produced too. Around 50 metal pieces, 8 different kinds, and a very heavy box indeed...

Stunning resin-stone board and pieces! Overproduced? Maybe, but somehow these heavy stone-like playing pieces are so appropriate.
Fun,simple game, too.

Instead of some dice, you have this cool "Menetekel" that makes lots of noise when you shake it.
Oh, and the plastic figures come in different shapes (tall, short, thin, and fat) and have little masks too!

I think this new game certainly qualifies as overproduced: topo-map style hills and valleys, moulded plastic hikers, trees, food, and gold, custom goods racks for each player.
I can't believe they're able to sell it for only $45 and still make a profit. Wonder how much it weighs?

C&C:A is a game that became overproduced due to the nature of its expansions.
The total number of wooden blocks in this game (including all expansions) is 1166 in seven different colors The number is based on the data from the boxes and excludes all the spare blocks provided...
While I love the game, it would be just as well playable with two sufficiently big generic armies instead of six sets that differ only by color and graphics... and not only it would be more playable but also easier to store and transport...
I shudder at the though of next expansions that I'm going to buy anyway ^^.

Sculpted monkeys, SCULPTED MOUNTAIN, and the huge board that does not do anything at all except for having a hole in it where the mountain goes. The game itself is just selecting one of your cards and going as many steps as it says forward or backwards. This could be done on a normal flat straight board with spaces labeled 1 to 30 or something.
But why not make it on a montain with monkeys?

I can't believe that this game is not included in this list yet.
This is one of the most overproduced games i've ever seen. Since its massive board (the same size as the Railroad Tycoon) to the enormous amount of figures ... No doubt, should be on this list

The box should give Descent and Starcraft a run for their money. Big box "with technology from King Arthur" and apparently an adventure game that takes place on an island with a volcano (I am not sure if that's good or bad),

The game has gorgeous cardboard components, but add in a set of completely unnecessary (and thus completely awesome) wooden wasabi dishes with bright green wooden wasabi cubes, and you have a wonderfully overproduced game.

I think The Omega Virus is a good contender because it was quite an overproduced game for pre-teens back in the early '90s. The molds for the players and their probe robots are quite detailed. There are several weapons you must collect by traveling about the board and clipping them to your player's backpack. The access cards are thick cardboard and about the size of what real access cards should be. The two most important overproduced parts are the game board, which just fits on a dinner table due to its ridiculous triangular flaps. And of course there is the electronic Central Computer that gives you clues on where the Virus is hiding, making The Omega Virus sort of like a Electronic Dream Phone for boys. (Surprise, surprise, Omega Virus creator Michael Gray was also responsible for Dream Phone [and Shogun AND Fortress America. Whew!])

I know many GW products have already hit the list, but it seems incomplete without this classic. Wish I'd never sold mine.

Eagle really launced the Ton of Plastic arms race with this title. I've never played, but I've picked through a loaded box. Very impressive pieces and production, indeed. It's too bad Eagle did not survive, I felt they were a good addition to the Ameri-niche of gaming.

What? This is not already in this list? I mean, check out that… I don't even where to start. And did I even mention that the hats, staffs and familiars on the player pieces are detachable? This is surely one of the most over-produced standard versions of a board game and perhaps even the most overproduced in terms of the complexity of the components in relation to the non-existent gameplay.
