Below is my Top 10 list of games covering good old fashion dungeon crawls. These are games that substantially meet all of the following criteria: (1) having a central theme of exploring underground regions (namely "dungeons") in the hope of discovering treasure or other quests, while slaying a variety of monsters/creatures and using swords and sorcery, etc.; (2) compelling "theme" (not too abstract or dexterity based); and (3) fun to play. This is a list of the BEST! As always, your mileage may vary and some entries may be "controversial." As such, please feel free to comment, debate, or just express your own point of view. Feel free to thumbsup this list (to draw attention and more comments) or any pleasing, interesting or thought provoking entries. If I missed one that you feel is essential or I am "insane for not listing" (trust me, it has been said before), then by all means let the comments fly . . . just be civil. FYI - I am a sucker for comments and discussion and usually thumbsup most if not all of them.

I find that these lists sometimes are helpful for others seeking similar games and the more rich the discussion for more useful the list.

For a complete listing of my Top 10 lists, see--MetaList: Nap's Top 10 Lists.

As always, thanks for reading and participating!

"It is everything I could've wished for in a dungeon crawl. I adore this game!!!"

--Scott Woodard (Ogma)

"Rated after many plays:
This, for me, is a near perfect adventure game. The "fun-factor" makes it a 10. Suspense: a real feel of a group trying to accomplish some task, danger, difficulty, great loot, great and endless possibilities. It has everything. It feels alot like AD&D to me, without all of the "out of combat" stuff. I love that stuff and will play D&D for that. For a dungeon crawl, for combat with some story and flavor, give me Descent!
It has the unfortunate possibility of being difficult to hit the table...some say "too long"
I personally don't care if it did take 16 hours to play...I enjoy it that much. We have been successful at getting our games in around the 3-4 hour mark..of course, we usually lose as the Hero, so they could go longer if we knew what the hell we were doing!!!"

"Castle Ravenloft, it's predecessor was very good: a lightweight, open-ended dungeon crawl with tons of narrative and theme and just enough strategy to keep it interesting. This is better: it's more old school, slightly tougher, has a fun campaign system, more tactical hero powers and more variety. Best dungeon game ever in an otherwise stale genre. Excellent though these games in this series are I'm not yet convinced it's worth owning more than one - but currently this is the one to get."

"The quintessential dungeon crawl. It doesn't require a DM so everyone can be a hero!"

--Ron Vickers (Kaos)

"This is my most favorite boardgame of all time. I can't recommend it enough, it has offered me hours of entertainment and replayability. This is THE dungeon crawl board game in my opinion."

"Best dungeon crawl / miniatures / fantasy board game ever -- lot of great memories from playing even the base set."

--Darryl Jam (Jammer)

"This is one of the greatest games ever made!!!"

--Jelle Kockx (jkblackwolf)

"The best fantasy board game for sure, its the one that started it all for me. Simple play but endless hours of fun for all ages. Nice board design and miniatures, truly a masterpiece in my books. The whole idea of a Game System is what really did it for me. With expansions and the Heroes being able to continue from quest to quest. Although I may only have 20 plays recorded here I have probably played this game tone of times. Every quest of all expansions multiple times. I still don't know what it is about this game that gives it that unique feeling (could be the GW influence from Jervis Johnson) but whatever it is I am glad it still has it for me."

"The game I've always been waiting for."

--Khelz Underworld (Khelz)

"This is an excellent little Co-op/Backstabbing dungeon crawler set in the Summoner Wars universe. The game plays extremely quickly with tons of excellent player interaction. There isn't a whole lot of variety in the dungeon tiles and encounter cards, but there are so many different combinations of hero powers that I still don't think the game will get stale for quite a while. Game play itself is reminiscent of Cutthroat Caverns, but with less detail and far milder ways for player's to sabotage each other. Comparing the two, I'd say Dungeon Run is almost as fun as Cutthroat Caverns, faster for sure, but not nearly as satisfying. Still, it's a great game and there is certainly room for both titles in a collection. I'd just use Dungeon Run for casual get togethers and sessions with tight time constraints, while saving Cutthroat for longer sessions and the more hardcore crowd."

"One of the best games of the last 5 years! Sure it ripped a page right out of the Dominion book but I find building your adventure party and fighting the monsters soooooooo much more enjoyable. I've since traded away all of my Dominion sets. I don't see the point of owning both.

This game is my second favorite all-time, second only to Age of Steam. The theme makes this game GREAT. It's surely not for everyone but it's 100% up my alley and I look forward to each and every expansion."

--Jim Carvin (jcarvin)

"One of my favorite games! Way more thematic than Dominion, and it feels like you're actually working towards something. It's an extremely fun deck building dungeon crawler. Dominion meets Diablo II. I admit the game can occasionally get bogged down by the specific monsters in the dungeon, but I don't mind it."

--Masis P. (sstrunks5555)

"Dominion + dungeon crawling = fun.

Stands apart from Dominion very nicely. Looking forward to trying out the expansions."

"The game ! If you like AD&D, Spacehulk, Blood-bowl, Full Metal Planet, Magic whitout the money it costs, so you will love this game.
You will find a bit of each of these games in Dungeon Twister"

--Jean-Louis GERAY (Crevette)

"Outstanding.
The game I've been waiting for ages, it's a fine blend of different styles of games like chess and dungeon crawler.
It's very tactical yet fun even if people think it's mostly about thinking hours between each move, it's not.You can play with a timer and add great tension to the game.
And the game is as good in its basic version as it is with expansions.
The 3/4 players version add a bit of chaos to it so more fun if you find it too cold to play for two."

--patrick vouillamoz (kumagron)

"The best game ever made for 2 players.
Great theme, great artwork, balanced game, good variety of characters and items with useful powers.
A lot of strategies and tactics. Great gestion of combat via cards. No luck except for the revelation of the room, so it's up to the players to analyze, manage, adapt and optimize their choice since both players have access to the same thing. Every games are differents."

"THE ONE and ONLY classic deadly dungeon-crawl."

--The Galactic Attic (Vanderdecken)

"An all time favourite. I must have played this game 500 times by now. Totally (almost) random, and that's what's fun with it. You'll be so abhorringly mashed by Dragon's Keep that you can't stop laughing. This older version is so downright mean that you'll be killed 90% of the times trying. Or more.

I like the original more than the FFG remake. They're very like, but the art was bland in the FFG version, and I didn't like the card distribution. I've recently put work into a personal remake, and am playing this game as always before."

--Simon Lundström (Zimeon)

"This game is a classic dungeon crawl with the fabulous twist of having the dungeon unfurl tile by tile. (Like Carcassonne meets Heroquest.) It's a chaotic game that doesn't involve a lot of strategy, so it's not for gamers who need to be in control of their destiny. We have a lot of fun with this one; we celebrate the victories and mourn the deaths together. And if you've played, then you know there are usually more deaths than victories."

"Best dungeon crawler out there.
Your heroes can become extremely powerful, but this is balanced by potentially powerful monsters and traps.
Could have been more strategic, but I guess that would take out some of the fun in the race to empty the crypts.
We have had a lot of laughs with this game. it's not deep, but there is a lot of action."

--Brian Pedersen (andrak)

"Amazing dungeon crawler - 160+ characters hundreds of monsters and spells, a sick amount of combos and replayability- And all playable in 2 hours or less."

"One of the best boardgames around."

--George Albanis (cimerians)

"VERY SIMPLE dungeon crawl so an ideal introduction for younger players. Gets a perfect 10 from me due to nostalgia, for a 33 year old game it still feels quite fresh to play. Also the options for adding monsters, items and even adventurers from later D&D expansion is unlimited. Cool!"

--Darren Thornton (ProfToff)

"This was one of those games that I used to rush home from school to play. My friend up the street owned it and it was a nice way to satisfy the D&D fix within a hort period of time and without fighting over who would be DM. Loved this Game. Never palyed the updated versions, but am now curious."
