Welcome to the third annual tournament for the Derk Cup!

The Derk Cup is awarded each year to BGG's favorite designer. In celebration of the minds behind the games, 64 designers (or design teams) will once again face off in a head to head, bracketed, single elimination tournament.

How the Tournament Works:
Designers were seeded using my top secret ranking method with stats collected on January 6, 2012.
There is a poll for each pairing. The poll will last for around four days. The designer with the most votes when the poll closes will move on to fight another day. The last designer standing will be the recipient of the prestigious 2012 Derk Cup.

Round 1 ends on Sunday, February 5, 2012 at 12:00 am (BGG time).

Announcement Thread:
Subscribe here to be alerted when each round begins.

Rules:
No sock puppets (one vote per match-up please).

Past Champions:
2011 - Reiner Knizia
2010 - Wolfgang Kramer

Banners:
The banners next to the designers' pictures represent previous performance in the tournament. They are mostly self-explanatory. New for this year are black banners. Black banners have been awarded to designers who were entered in the inaugural 2010 Derk Cup.

This is a tough one, at least psychologically. Knizia has a bunch of my favorite games under his name, and has been the bigger influence in the last twenty years. But voting against Larry Harris and one of the iconic wargames of the last fifty years? That just seems wrong.

For me it comes down to Dominion being a great game and a great intro game for non-gamers BUT....I did tire of it.

I've never tired of MTG. I stopped spending money on it a long time ago (except for occasional purchase) but I still love building decks and trying them out and the sheet range and variety and...I could go on. (and I never even mentioned the awesome V:TES and Roborally).

Mark Herman probably gets the distinction for being the top paid war game designer anywhere. I don't actually know how much money he makes, but he designs games as part of his job as an EVP at Booze Allen. That title easily puts him well in to 6 figures and probably mid-to high six figures.

According to his book, he makes games as part of his job. That's a pretty sweet gig. Imagine another designer getting called by the pentagon to help with a problem

Yo Klaus- we need help figuring out what to do with all this wood we have. Do you think Russia would help us out with some Sheep? That would totally rule.

Yo Klaus-Jurgen, we are having some trouble with our high-way system, can you tell us which way to build our new interchange so that we can maximize our farming system?

Anyway, really tough choice - similar to the Garfield/Vaccarino context. Herman invented the CDG genre, and Matthews used that to make the #1 game on BGG. Both great designers.

(for what it's worth, getting Heroscape published and supported by Hasbro for so many years should win him an award on its own).

Yep that was 12 Power Grid maps back to back over two days. Worth doing, but possibly not in such a concentrated burst.

Ack! So far Bauza has aced the three games I've played of his, and Bruno sometimes missteps. But I like them both very much!

Takenoko is another good Bauza, although it's not in the top 1000 apparently.

Great list and some VERY tough choices.

For me, if the designers expansion didn't add something significant to the rules of the base game, it was excluded. By doing this, the designers of successful multiple gaming mechanics had a clear edge.

Still several pairing were very close...

But still I miss, The Man Who Fears Nothing in His Designs: Phil Eklund.

So completely true. Please, Lord, make sure Phil continues to design games nobody else dares to do. He brings so much freshness in the hobby... cool

Some tough choices indeed...

You'd think there would be some great female board game designers out there - let's get to work, ladies!
