Welcome to the third annual tournament for the Derk Cup!

The Derk Cup is awarded each year to BGG's favorite designer. In celebration of the minds behind the games, 64 designers (or design teams) will once again face off in a head to head, bracketed, single elimination tournament.

How the Tournament Works:
Designers were seeded using my top secret ranking method with stats collected on January 6, 2012.
There is a poll for each pairing. The poll will last for around four days. The designer with the most votes when the poll closes will move on to fight another day. The last designer standing will be the recipient of the prestigious 2012 Derk Cup.

Round 1 ends on Sunday, February 5, 2012 at 12:00 am (BGG time).

Announcement Thread:
Subscribe here to be alerted when each round begins.

Rules:
No sock puppets (one vote per match-up please).

Past Champions:
2011 - Reiner Knizia
2010 - Wolfgang Kramer

Banners:
The banners next to the designers' pictures represent previous performance in the tournament. They are mostly self-explanatory. New for this year are black banners. Black banners have been awarded to designers who were entered in the inaugural 2010 Derk Cup.

Just a few off the top of my head, that I would have listed before all the Catan variants.

Leacock has some good designs, but nowhere near the breadth of Teuber. He needs to keep at it a while to be competitive.

Entdecker is one of the best games I've ever played.

If a game you like is missing from my list, by all means, add it in the comments.

FYI, the lists are the designer's top games by rank according to BGG's top 1000 on January 6, 2012. If a designer has been especially prolific, like Teuber, I've only listed their games from the top 500.

I think this argues at the strength of Mr Teuber's resume. And its probably a matter of opinion which of his games deserve to be listed as the X best.

Sure, but Rob has taken a lot of old brands and brought them back to life in very interesting ways. Risk Legacy is probably the most interesting/innovative thing to come out of gaming in the last year (or several years) from any company - small to large. That Hasbro is publishing it is nothing short of amazing.

I would say the same thing about Heroscape several years ago. A modular, easy to grasp battle system that also looks awesome exposed a ton of kids (and adults) to a style of gaming much more interesting than a simple roll and move.

Ohhh...kayyyy.

When it comes down to it, in the 'great designers' debate, there will only ever be one name at the top of my list, and it's the man who gave us such gloriously tantalising and stylish inventions as Goa, Louis XIV and Arkadia.

I say it's time to push this guy through at least to the semi-finals, if not further!

I will never get bored with it either. Except Kiesling has co-designed 10+ of the best games that exist. Even if he is responsible for only 10% of The Mask Trilogy, Torres, Maharaja: The Game of Palace Building in India, Pueblo, Cavum, Asara, That's Life!, Bison: Thunder on the Prairie, Artus, etc, etc, etc, he would still get my vote.

Great list and some VERY tough choices.

For me, if the designers expansion didn't add something significant to the rules of the base game, it was excluded. By doing this, the designers of successful multiple gaming mechanics had a clear edge.

Still several pairing were very close...
